At long last an MP see's the light...

Labour MP Graham Jones whom represents Hyndburn in Lancashire has tabled an "Early day motion" (991) in the houses of Parliament for the extension of the M56 motoway from Colne to East Leeds which would pass near to Leeds Bradford Airport, and have connecting spurs to both the the M62 and M1

That this House is concerned by the continued lack of transport infrastructure serving West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and East Lancashire; recognises that there are currently high levels of congestion around Leeds, Bradford and Leeds Bradford Airport; notes that significant investment in both road and rail infrastructure is required to increase connectivity and decrease congestion; suggests that, with regards to road infrastructure, the M65 be extended from Colne to East Leeds passing near Leeds Bradford Airport, and with connecting spurs to the M62 (south) and M1 (north); further suggests that, with regards to rail infrastructure, existing rail connections are updated between Leeds Bradford Airport and Leeds City, with updated links to the north east, to Burnley and Accrington (north West), and to Hellifield (with a possible connection to Glasgow); believes that such coterminous proposals would relieve overstretched roads and railways of congestion, while unlocking the potential for increased commercial connectivity between important Northern centres; and calls on the Government to consider and support such proposals as aiding its Northern Powerhouse project.

I have be saying for years that they should extend the M65 through to meet the A1M. Would take a lot of traffic off the M62, but more importantly would put a major motorway just a few miles from LBA. Bring on the bulldozers!!!

Whatever route chosen will give amunition to the children of Swampy and all the other eco-warriors, I wont hold my breath, its will make planning permission for the third runway at LHR seem childs play.

Sadly this motorway route would almost certainly involve Wharfedale and it was partly because of that and the envrionmental impact, that the original Pudsey - Dishforth M62 - A1 link motorway was dropped. That would have gone right alongside LBA, roughly where Scotland Lane is. Of course the Harrogate by-pass follows the route of the dropped motorway and the new airport link road will also do so for a short distance. The big issue is where would such a new motorway run, what damage would it do to Wharfedale, particularly in the Ilkley area where the valley is narrower, and whether it is affordable. The presence of a winding river along the length of the valley floor, which is also a flood plain, would make it very challenging and expensive indeed.

Bloody hell! It looks like Leeds councillors Judith Blake & Richard Lewis are actually singing from the same hymn sheet as the owners of Leeds/Bradford Bridgepoint Capital at long last regards the proposed Parkway Rail Station and also includes the new link road.

Whats more shocking is that they sent in a joint letter which was also signed by and Leeds Transport Expert Advisory Panel chair Nigel Foster to the Yorkshire Evening Post and they have even published it in today's edition.

Well I have been saying for quite some time that part of the reason for the delay in publishing the airport masterplan is to ensure that airport and council are all agreed and it now seems they are on this issue. Considering a couple of years ago neither the council nor the airport were favouring the parkway station, this is quite a turn around, but both appear to have accepted, eventually, that an airport station is not deliverable in the foreseeable future and is full of obstacles and costs that they may struggle to overcome. For people of my age who have spent most of their lives seeing LCC and LBA at loggerheads over any sort of airport development, this makes a refreshing change. It seems absolutely clear too that if this parkway station goes ahead, then Option 1 will be the chosen (and only viable) route.

Blake confirmed in YEP article it would cost £100m and take ten years (v around 6 years for parkway)...

Seems Leeds is just picking the quick and cheap option?

Wow we may have joined up writing if were not careful. As White Heather states the airport access road now has to be option A linking to the new park and ride park/station.
As one who wants to see less vehicle access in yeadon, this in the next two decades allows use to develop airport parking to the east of the airport rather then the west on the masterplan.
I dont see this as a short term fix more a long term sensible plan, sorting out transport in the area, parking, access to Leeds/Bradford by local transport and a an efficent way to get passengers to the airport by public transport.
This station will be no further from the airport then the Luton parkway station, which has not hampered expansion at Luton airport.

Wow something is the air. As the proposed LBA Parkway/ North west Leeds Park & Ride station really dose have full support and backing of everyone invovled at long last. As Harrogate Chamber of Commerce have got in on the act now by also sending a in letter to the Yorkshire Post which has published it this morning.

Why tram-trains serving Leeds Bradford Airport just aren't viable

A transport expert from the Harrogate Chamber of Commerce has written to the Yorkshire Post explaining why a tram-train link to Leeds Bradford Airport would be uneconomical.

Nothing new with this. Brian Dunsby of the Harrogate Chamber of Commerce has been championing the parkway station for the last 5 years and it is everyone else that has come around to his way of thinking.

Luton parkway station has survived for years supply Luton airport passengers by bus, day and night, not really an issue for LBA passengers to have this service, we need a rail station, parking and link road, all can be build in stages.
Choice the station site and lets go ahead with the acess road and get on with the project.

I agree with Tarn Spotter on this one, lets get on with the project, get the Parkway station built which will not only benefit airport passenger but local residents as well. Then when the projected passenger numbers approach somewhere near the 7m per annum that the airport are projecting then we can look at some sort of spur off the main line to the airport direct. No point banging on about a spur now as it will not happen, lets get this working to the advantage of everyone and then we can look later at the viability.

Harrogate will benefit far more from park and ride to airport than tram, so of course they will push for that.

Richard Lewis is just liability. He famously claimed that Leeds doesn't have a traffic problem and has free moving traffic. Not sure which Leeds that is but it's not the one I live in!

Don't get me started, as i'm neither a big fan of Labour councillors Judith Blake & Richard Lewis, The both as bad as each other to be honest with you..
As we all know Leeds could and should do a whole lot better, Its just that our esteemed leaders disagree with most if not everything thats offered to them, so nothing ever happens or takes twice as long eg Leeds City Region Devolution deal...

Lets hope that with all in agreement things can progress and move on swiftly for the sake of the airport and the travelling public?

I'm stuck in the middle with this one. I do fully support the parkway proposal and I hope it comes to fruition but I still feel the tram train option should be pursued as soon as possible. I firmly believe the only achievable way of getting a more direct link to the airport from Leeds and Bradford is with a tram-train option. A tram-train link could also serve the towns of Yeadon, Rawdon and Guiseley making an airport link more viable whilst also improving local public transport links with Leeds and Bradford. The way forward here is to fully support the parkway station but it needs to be built with the future in mind so it can be upgraded and integrated into a tram-train network at the earliest opportunity. Integration into a wider public transport network will open up endless possibilities as well as reducing car usage around the airport.

Well the two councilors should try travelling on a bus at tea time. Last week 3/4 hr from Bus Station to Dunelm on the 229 and another 20 mins to Gildersome.

Does nobody see that building a Parkway will mean a direct link can never be achieved?

1. Leeds council has £170m available now to meet the £100m cost estimated by Blake in the YEP this week. It will never have access to this level of government funding to spend as it chooses in future.

2. The business case for a direct link now is that there is no rail access. Therefore the business case compares no access v direct access.
If a Parkway is built then the business case will compare the Parkway minibus link versus a direct link. The sums won't add up as a spreadsheet will say replacing a minibus with a train not viable.
