For anyone interested it’s the 737 Centrebus (Bradford-Shipley-Guiseley-Yeadon-Airport) service that is to be extended from the Airport onto Harrogate to replace the Dales & District 767 link which is been dropped from April.

Also the route to Harrogate from the Airport will see an increase in frequency from the current every 90 mins service to an Hourly service.

question guys..why isnt there a bus service from keighley/bingley etc to the airport?? im sure there must be other people who fly from leeds from the bingley/ keighley area.

Good question. I maybe wrong but my guess it’s that because no bus company is willing to take the risk of running that route commercially. It’s a big risk to start a service like this without receiving any kind of tendered money from either LBA or Metro for off peak journeys.

At the moment there are of course other options to get to LBA from both Keighley and Bingley. All you have to do is get a direct train or one of the regular Transdev Keighley & District bus services 660/760 to Shipley and connect onto the Centrebus, Airport Direct 737 service.

I would prefer to see the current 762/765 Keighley-Silsden-Addingham-Ilkley bus extended to the airport. Would serve a whole host of new towns.

Yes that would be a good idea Big-Man. But how would you expect K&D to run it from Ilkley to the Airport without LBA and Metro having to find extra money?

The other problem you would have is that are good links already between Ilkley and Otley. You also have direct bus services from Otley, Guiseley & Menston to the airport which all already recive tendered money from Metro and LBIA.

What should be happening is that Metro along with all bus operators throughout West Yorkshire should allow through ticketing for passengers going to the airport. Passengers should be issued 1 ticket which will allow them to travel the full distance and change operators from either First, Transdev, Arrvia and others onto the Centerbuses 737, 747 & 757 Airport direct routes and TLC's 967 services.

In a way this is already in place with Metro's New Day Ticket. But it needs more adbertising by all concerned. Bus Operators, Metro and LBIA.

[textarea]Leeds Bradford Airport: Warning poor transport links are a turn-off for passengers

West Yorkshire’s “isolated” airport is losing plane loads of passengers to its rival in Manchester because of dire transport links and clogged roads, it was claimed today.

Business chiefs and politicians in Leeds warned ministers that it is vital money is found to improve the creaking transport connections to Leeds-Bradford International Airport.

The Yeadon airport, which employs 2,500 people and generates business of £100m a year, is to undergo a £28m expansion of its terminal and facilities and passenger numbers are expected to continue to increase.

But Pudsey Tory MP Stuart Andrew said it remains the only airport in the country where access to it is along single carriageway roads.

He has thrown his support behind a plan to build a so-called “tram-train” light rail link between the airport and Leeds – although he admits the huge sums needed to fund such a project will not be available in the next few years.

Speaking to the YEP, he said passengers in West Yorkshire are already opting to travel over the Pennines and fly from Manchester rather than risk getting stuck in heavy traffic on the congested roads which connect to LBIA.

He said: “We have got to have a debate – do we want it to be the regional airport and if we do, how are we going to get people there?

“At the moment the transport links are too poor.

“Manchester has a railway to it and significant road links. That means people are travelling across the Pennines to go there from here.”

Bosses at the airport have set aside land for a light-rail station, which they hope would be served by tram-trains.

Popular in Europe, tram-trains operate on conventional rail tracks but can also run on tram lines built into the road.

The proposed tram-train connection would run from the Harrogate (Leeds-Headingley-Harrogate-York) railway line to the airport and would, for the first time, allow a single circular rail route linking Leeds, the airport, Bradford, York and Harrogate.

Mr Andrew recently raised the issue during a high profile Parliamentary debate, saying: “It is an isolated airport, and there is an opportunity for us to look at providing a tram-train link from the Harrogate line up to the airport and down on to the Guiseley line, which would then, for the first time, connect Bradford with Harrogate and offer options for passengers.”

Ian Williams, director of policy at the Leeds Chamber of Commerce said such a rail link would bring “significant benefits” to the Leeds economy.

“The airport is a key economic driver and plays an important role in connecting businesses and tourists to London and other European cities. Improved connectivity would help drive growth and inward investment, as well as enhance the city region’s position as a leading business hub,” he said.

LBIA’s chief executive John Parkin admitted the full price tag of the tram-train proposal was not yet known but that it would cost “tens of millions”.

He said such a transport project is “highly desirable” and would bring “benefits for the wider region”.

However, he also questioned the impact of the airport on traffic congestion and contested one of Mr Andrew’s claims, saying Bristol also has single carriageway access.

Hopefully the Leeds services will improve when the A65 Quality Bus Corridor scheme is finished next year. Once complete and all road works removed this should speed up bus services (5, 33/33A, 508, 670, 757 & 760) that all currently use the A65 Kirkstall Road into and out of Leeds City Centre by at least 5 to 10 minutes journey time.

It's also been mentioned that a second route to the Airport from Leeds linking with Headingley and the University could be starting soon. So watch this space. I dont know if this will happen but it’s been mentioned and rumoured a lot lately.

I do still wonder if LBIA's Managerment last year should have now allowed to let First Bus continue to operate its own 757 service in direct competition with Centrebuses current 757. If so, it wouldn’t be stuck with the current half hourly unreliable service that everyone seems to be complaining about.

Hi

The VOSA website has listed the current Dales and District, 767 Airport-Harrogate bus route is to be cancelled from April 16th 2011 due to NYCC dropping its funding.

PB0004318/62 - PROCTERS COACHES (NORTH YORKSHIRE) LTD T/A PROCTERS COACHES, TUTIN ROAD, LEEMING BAR INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, NORTHALLERTON, DL7 9UJ

737 Bradford - Leeds Bradford Airport - Harrogate = White Rose Bus Co.

Introduction of a new daily service from Bradford - Harrogate via Pannal Spacey
Houses, Huby, Pool Leeds Bradford Airport, Yeadon, Guiseley and Shipley. The
service will run hourly between 0610hrs and 2110hrs

Isn't that basically the Bradford - Harrogate bus service run in the 70's? Talk about going full circle.

Yes... I remember it well, it was the only bus that called at the airport in those days. I think it went via Apperley Bridge and not via Shipley, etc. Hope the new service is well supported.

[textarea]Opinion: A65 - What's the solution to Leeds' traffic congestion?

Guest blogger and local resident Thomas Harvey takes a look at the ongoing problems with traffic congestion and development on the A65 artery into Leeds

Anyone regularly forced to travel along the A65 will know just how terrible the road can be. The ten-mile stretch between Guiseley and Leeds is well known for its numerous black spots and the problems aren't confined to rush hour.

New developments along its path are frequently announced and always heavily contested on the grounds of the A65's congestion and the strain on local infrastructure. Today, plans to construct 550 new homes on the former Clariant and Riverside Mills site look set to be declined for these very reasons.

However, in a large city such as Leeds, progress is inevitable with affluent areas along the road's corridor, such as Horsforth, Guiseley and Ilkley, a prime target for developers. Watered-down versions often scrape through on appeal and steadily add to the problem, so rather than forever trying to fight a losing battle it's time to employ a long-term robust solution.

Solving the problem of the A65 isn't easy, though. Much of it runs through densely populated areas making significant widening schemes difficult. That said the Kirkstall Road area is currently being upgraded to incorporate bus lanes as part of Metro's £22m Quality Bus Corridor scheme.

I'm very cynical as to the benefits this project will have on overall congestion. As previously stated, the road runs through some of the more affluent areas of the city where it's unlikely that people will be inclined to give up their cars in favour of buses, even if they could shave off a few minutes from their daily commutes. Rather than introduce a lane restricted to buses, how about opening it up to car sharing, as in other parts of the city? Surely in some cases it would be better to just accept the reality of car use.

New bypass next to A65?
Another idea would be to build a brand new bypass adjacent to the A65 along the River Aire green belt. Undoubtedly a very controversial plan but I believe it makes sense on several levels.

Firstly, it would divert traffic away from both the A65 and A657 meaning quieter roads for residents of Horsforth, Calverley, Rodley and Yeadon, to name a few.

Secondly, the road could be joined up to the existing Bingley Bypass, creating an almost unbroken arterial route through the clogged suburbs of North Bradford and North West Leeds. And thirdly, it could also be connected up to Leeds Bradford Airport which currently suffers from dire transport links.

However, my anti-public transport sentiments do not extend as far as what is possibly the A65's greatest asset and what I believe has to be one of the best solutions to its chronic congestion problems - the modern, quick, efficient Wharfedale Line.

Trains are much more likely to get people to give up their cars and the increase in passenger numbers on the line in the past two decades indicate its huge potential. However, along with many other rail routes into the city, the line has long reached saturation point, with Metro no longer even advertising for new users.

Train overcrowding
I'm certain that there are a huge number of people whom would commute by train but are put off by issues such as overcrowding and lack of a local station - perfectly valid points in my eyes. Trains are packed even before reaching Guiseley in a morning and you may have had to abort using the train altogether through lack of a parking space.

The Wharfedale line desperately needs more carriages, more stations and longer platforms – a long and expensive wish list maybe, but surely their benefits more than outweigh the costs and how long before they pay for themselves through greater ridership? Does supply and demand not apply to railways?

MPs and other representative bodies must continue piling the pressure upon the government to divert their transport spending away from the South East. Plans for new stations at Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall Forge are a positive step forward but their funding is far from secure, and with several other deserving sites along the line and in other parts of the city, there's still a long way to go.

A debate on the future of taxi rank provision at Leeds Bradford Airport was being discussed in the Leeds City Council chambers this week. Does anybody know anymore about what was said at this meeting?

I am amazed that DSA gets 18m pounds just like that for a new link road when LBA has been waiting 30 years or more.

Its good use of our tax payers money as Doncaster now has 5 flights a day sometimes whilst we at Leeds have 50 so why would we need better road connections ? I have no problem with them getting a better road connection but I believe we should have had higher priority up here.

It doesn't surprise me wawkrk, as South Yorkshire has traditionally received more funding than West Yorkshire due to the urban generation schemes that have been necessary down there. When it comes to West Yorkshire, we rarely seem to get any funding for anything - I have lost count of how many schemes the Government has refused to back when similar schemes elsewhere, including Sheffield, have been given the green light. Frankly I think it will take more than a link road to make DSA a major success. It is the location, too far from Sheffield and with too many established airports surrounding it, that is holding it back and nothing to do with link roads, which are nice to have, but not the be all and end all - if it were LBA would be dead and buried by now with its complete absence of any decent routes to the airport.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
