a new terminal could be built over at HS2 with passengers catching a shuttle/people mover to the current airport where they'd board their flight. Demolishing the existing terminal could make way for much more stands.

The last I heard this was pretty much the plan although the new terminal would contain the land side facilities, check in, bag drop etc, then a people mover would take passengers to the current site which could effectively become totally air side. With a little reconfiguration and some expansion south into the car parks there is room for plenty of new stands.

This was a while ago though so it may well have changed since then.

In time if even more capacity is needed, a new runway could then be built over by HS2, and the new terminal extended to be able to handle these flights.

There is the potential for a new runway, or two, at the HS2 site possibly with an eventual move of the whole airport. Developments such as Arden Cross come into the equation and whether there is scope to earmark land specifically for airport development which may not happen for another 20 years or so.

There is so much to take into account with this one that I'm not surprised it has been delayed. It's a once in a generation opportunity and it needs to be done right.

As Mr Kehoe said, it depends how bold they want to go.

I fly from Birmingham sometimes , I take the train down from my local station in Cheshire to New Street, then quick hop to International. The new rail operator is called London Northwestern and sometimes soon one of its two trains an hour which runs down from Liverpool will extend to International. I am pleased with them so far as my local station Acton Bridge will be getting an improved service and a Sunday service, so can't complain.

Surely a better long term vision would be to move the whole airport over to the HS2 site with room to expand, and turn the existing airport over to redevelopment and build what is currently planned for Arden Cross on the current airport site?

Silly question, would it not be easier to run HS2 down the elmdon side of runway 15 potential for a station there especially with the demolition of certain hangers

I definately haven’t researched anything about this, just thinking about it.

It would be great for the airport but a real struggle to then carry the line on into Central Birmingham, the only feasible way in is the one chosen.

I don't think that's a bad thing as the current airport site is very restricted for expansion, a move to the HS2 site could have massive potential.

Ah yes, I think I took the idea a bit too literally. A people mover is more likely than a taxiway connecting the two.
I still like the thought of racing an A380 along the A45 though! :)

Converting the existing terminal into mainly aircraft stands and then land side facilities (check in, security etc) at the HS2 site sounds like a great idea.

Does this resiting square with the position of the current hotels (and new one - any new pictures btw?)?

Wrt the A45, I had answered the questionannaire re the proposed new link road from the M42 and suggested that if it branched to the left on approach to BHX it could take all northbound A45 traffic so avoiding it clogging up the problematic M4 2 junction 6.

This how I'd like to see BHX expand.

Definitely one of the most logical ideas that I've seen. Even if the land side facilities do move to the HS2 site I could see air side growing like that in the future.
I would forget the HS2 idea and focus on land South of the A45. Builidng the infrastructure for such remote access would cost a fortune heading well towards a billion, a figure the airport cannot afford. With the terminal...allow 500 mill....would be the road and non-HS2 infrastructure in an already infrastructure heavy location....allow 300 to 400 million....plus ancillaries, contingencies etc. Only viable with a second runway in that location.

I would opt for concentrating things around the airport which will be by far the most cost effective and sustainable option even taking into account DazJS' fee.

Noticed that BHX on GoogleEarth has been updated - the nostalgia, Monarch! Icelandair! Interestingly one of the airbridges appears to have been removed on the stand next to the A380 gate? Was this just for repairs or something or has it gone altogether? I’m sure there were two last time I was there.

Good to see that Google Earth have a update when the airport was quite busy.

It seems as if we are going to have to wait for a new terminal with the HS2 Station now being future proofed for the addition at a later stage.

According to the area’s Hub Growth & Infrastructure Plan published in January, the airport is now working with HS2 to future proof the construction of the station to ensure a new airport terminal could be built with minimal operational and construction difficulties in a later phase.

“This would involve ensuring, that any bridging works across the HS2 line required to construct the combined terminal are provided in advance the HS2 terminal itself is easily capable of extension, the road network will facilitate a combined terminal and plinths are provided across the track to facilitate the combined terminal,” the report said.

Found this image on SSC. Will the existing International station get an upgrade among all the development surrounding HS2 and UK Central? I really hope so.
Solihull - Birmingham International Station? Why not just add the hated West Midlands tag onto the end as well for a while and then maybe drop the Birmingham.Or maybe stick with Birmingham International!:banghead:

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
