Wow that is a pretty radical ideal Ian.Thanks all. That is what I thought. Integrated transport, smart transport and efficient mass transport is the future. What HS2 and 3 will do, should do, is eradicate the need for internal flights in the UK.
So how about this for a change in direction: use the airport as a multi modal transport hub. Wanna fly across the Atlantic? Come to Birmingham airport, check in and catch a train to Heathrow. Get to Heathrow in 30 minutes. Likewise coming to Brum. 30 minutes from Heathrow.
With HS3 you could also do the same for MAN flights. Convert the airfield into an area for a coach//bus station ,car parks, and there would be still room for sidings for HS trains.. Last but not least would be the tram line extension. But of course all the other developments would be long up and running before that got there.
Not sure if it could still be called an airport though.

. But I suppose it’s worth a try what harm can it do
