Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I was not sure where to post these photos because they are mainly about the runway showing a pilots eye view of landing on runway 32. Something you cannot see as a passenger. You can see how far down the touchdown point is beyond the threshold. Then after landing, how little above the runway the Chevin seems to be.I took these before runway 27 was closed.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

...and the annoying thing is where you see the piano keys now used to be where the touchdown markers were. I do hope the airport adds the ILS problem to the updated masterplan for sorting.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

£80 million to sort a piddly runway that can't handle aircraft larger than Dash8's! I think LBA would need to re-mortgage several times over to get our strip of concrete up to scratch! :good:

Guernsey has a standard 46m wide runway the same as LBA and most other airports including Heathrow. I was not really thinking about re-doing the whole length to get rid of the bump.
Guernsey has a bigger problem with a 38ft drop over a short distance.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

LBA doesn't really need its bump, or rather downslope, levelling. It just needs the touch down point on 32 moving back to where it used to be prior to the runway extension, so aircraft land on the level part of the runway. It was only moved to where it is now to pacify NIMBY's in Horsforth and to ensure aircraft were flying higher on final approach. Sadly the adaptations to the ILS appear to be a bigger obstacle than the NIMBY's now, but if they ever did, it would be like a runway extension on 32, although still not much use on 14. If there is a 'bump' that needs levelling, its a really big one - Otley Chevin!

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

If we lived in China we would be talking about how the Chevin was flattened to remove the obstacle. :bomb: :bomb: :bomb: :bomb:

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Yes you are correct as usual Heather. What annoys me is people moving next to an airport, then trying to close it down. If it wasn't for the airport, they would not have been able to afford to live on Scotland Lane.

Re:Runway, Apron & Taxiways

lbaspotter -

Can you update us as to how many aircraft stands will be required next summer.
Has the situation not changed over the last few weeks.
It must be close to saturation point if there are any delays and more unplanned aircraft are on the ground at the same time.

Many thanks.

As things stand, I think it still stands at 19 based aircraft at LBA for next summer as follows.

1x Embrear 135 = bmi regional
1x Fokker 70 = KLM City Hopper
1x Boeing 737-800WL = Thomson Airways
2x Airbus A320-200 = Monarch Airlines
3x Boeing 737-800WL = Ryanair.com
7x Boeing 737-300 = Jet2.com
1x Boeing 737-800 = Jet2.com
3x Boeing 757-200 = Jet2.com

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Ok Thanks,
Getting very close to the limit then and if BA eventually night stop then up to 20.
Am I correct in thinking that only 20 stands for aircraft up to 737 size?

Only 18 stands I'm afraid as stand 1 can only take max Q400/Sabb2000 and stand 5 max size is the F100. I know a 737 was parked on stand 5 last year once as a test but I don't think I have seen one there again?

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Blimey, 19 night stoppers and 18 stands plus 1 for the Embraer.
No overnight diverts allowed in then.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I think potential there are 23 parking spots for aircraft avaliable, you have stands 1 and 3, then stands 5 - 18; then your remote stands, 19, 21, 22 and 24 plus the airports aerodrome manual states that the end of November taxiway between n3 and n4 can be closed to allow 3 aircraft to park within this area however i haven't yet seen it and imagine it would be very tight with various ground equipment. That makes your 23 parking spaces, obviously some stands are only avaliable for specific aircraft, i.e. stand 1 i think can house up to a Dash 8-400 which has to be parked nose out etc.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

also I have heard stand 5 might be used for B733 in the coming months/next summer, as previously menstioned this has been tried however it proved tight for various parts of ground equipment

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Re the fog and the diversions to other airports, a few years ago i flew with my wife and family down to LHR from MAN and on the the USA from there. On our approach in to LHR it became, as we thought, very foggy (it turned out to be thick smoke as it was the day that the (Bunsfield??) oil depot went up in smoke) and as we landed extremely smoothly the pilot came over the tannoy to announce that he hoped we'd enjoyed the journey and the landing had been completed by the automated landing system. I believe it was a BA A320. As someone who is simply interested in aviation only with no experience at all with aircraft I was wondering is it simply that the LBA runway etc is not as advanced as LHR or does it simply come down to aircraft/crew using LBA not being equipped with CAT1 CAT3 etc?? I realise, by the way, that one issue at LBA is runway length

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I seem to recall back in 2004 before the new remote stand area was completed, when the likes of a Britannia 762 was on the deck that up to 2 Jet2 737's got parked on the taxiway most nights before getting towed onto stands after the first wave departed.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

The Cat 3 landing system at LBA is the same as LHR during autoland as I understand it. Cat 1 & Cat 2 landings are not automatic but manual. The problem is now runway length since the threshhold was moved so limited to smaller aircraft like B733/738 or the odd larger aircraft. The actual auto landing may not be as smooth as LHR because of the slope, in fact quite firm from my experience. After the system was first intalled, Britannia used to autoland in Cat 3b conditions I think it was on runway 32 with 757's until it was decided that there was too much float on touchdown.
Maybe someone with more knowlege could correct me.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Regarding aircraft stands for S13

It seemed as though 19 stands were required but that was Jet2 having 11 based aircraft, is it now 13 aircraft so 21 stands and if BA decide to night stop 22?
Hardly any space for further expansion by Ryanair or Monarch or some new airline.
I assume there must be a plan to address this.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
