Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I think as previously mentioned there is space on taxiway November for three aircraft, far from ideal but it's still an area which can be used for overnight parking.

Regarding aircraft stands for S13

It seemed as though 19 stands were required but that was Jet2 having 11 based aircraft, is it now 13 aircraft so 21 stands and if BA decide to night stop 22?
Hardly any space for further expansion by Ryanair or Monarch or some new airline.
I assume there must be a plan to address this.

Jet2 will only need 11x operational based aircraft at LBA next summrr. 7x B737-300's, 1x B737-800 and 3x B757-200's. An 8th B737-300 will be parked as a standby aircraft. And in theory it could end up been 19x night stoppers on the apron if the spare aircraft is in use elsewhere or it gets swapped around as hapoened this year so they could get tech aircraft in the multiflight hangar and seen to ASAP.

So in fact only 20 stands are required next summer for the following.

1x Embrear 135 = bmi regional
1x Fokker 70 = KLM City Hopper
1x Boeing 737-800WL = Thomson Airways
2x Airbus A320 = Monarch Airlines
3x Boeing 737-800WL = Ryanair.com
8x Boeing 737-300 = Jet2.com
1x Boeing 737-800 = Jet2.com
3x Boeing 757-200 = Jet2.com

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Hi Mode1, I have just posted something covering this on the PIA thread if you are interested, but I think you are already aware of many of the obstacles judging by your comments above!

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Does anyone feel that there should be a taxiway or a loop (like Runway 14) built at the end of Runway 32? It's a daft question I admit.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Not a daft question at all. I think that a parallel taxiway running from taxiway delta (the old North-South taxiway) to the end of 32 will be the first phase of a full-length parallel taxiway and it’s turn-on to 32 will eliminate the need for a loop (although if a fast turn off was included it would create something similar).

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

A parallel taxiway at the Horsforth end was included in the last development plan, and apparently will be required when aircraft movements go beyond a specific number per hour. I can't remember what that number was, but I can imagine that if it were not for the loss of a significant number of domestic flights in recent years, there might be times when LBA is getting pretty close to the levels that might start things moving for a future taxiway. I would be very surprised indeed if there isn't one there within the next 5 to 10 years, possibly sooner. The revised development plan will no doubt give us a clue as to what is planned and when.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

That image was made by me and is posted somewhere on this forum a couple of years back. I can't remember who took the photo originally.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I've never flown in or out of LBA - maybe I'll have to put that right - but I assume the complex to the right of the picture is the Multiflight facility.

If LBA grew in time to, say, over 10 mppa would there be room on the current terminal site to handle this number of passengers and the required aircraft or is it likely a second terminal might have to be considered the other side of the runway, with perhaps new taxiways, and the complications to operations that might bring?

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

To be honest for the boarding of flights it can barely cope now that's along with the infrastructural nightmare of inbound passengers at the same time. This summer is going to be very challenging with all the added flights. So if they want any where near that of even 4mpa they are going to have to extend along the apron and configure the arrivals process to be more standardised.

And after that the check in halls are pretty much at bursting point at peak times, especially hall a.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

As far as I am concerned, to handle that number of passengers, a new terminal would be required, and to me the location for that would be where the car park is now. The ground drops away there anyway, so ideal for a lower level, allowing arrivals on one level and departures above. Once the existing terminal was removed, the airfield can then be extended towards the new terminal, with the apron extending over the area where the terminal is now - providing a great deal more space for aircraft. The biggest challenge would be getting passengers from the new terminal to the aircraft whilst the old terminal is demolished, so some sort of temporary walkway and road way would be required. A new road layout would also be required, but the airfield would become that bit wider at its narrowest point, and we could at last have a purpose built, split level terminal. Then I think we could handle 10m pax per year. It goes without saying though that the road infrastructure would have to be improved, and hopefully a rail link by that time.

That image looks like it has wiped out the Scotland Estate and beyond!!!! Great image and lots of ground work required!

Wasn't there a night time image as well? :)

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

That image includes runway extensions as well as two parallel taxiways. The taxiway at the Yeadon end is unlikely for some considerable time given the difficulties of building it over the main road. The one at the Horsforth end is about right - if perhaps a little longer than what we will end up with!

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Unlike in your picture, Aviador, I do not believe the central part of the taxiway to be necessary. However, I would also like to see the apron widened, in a slightly different place to yourself.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Well if what has just posted in the Jet2 thread saying that they will have up 14x based aircraft at LBA this summer 2013 season it looks like the apron is going to be full to the rafters with aircraft. So where is everything going to fit on a night time as I now get the following 22x night stoppers.

1x Embrear 145 = bmi regional
1x Fokker 70 = KLM City Hopper
1x Boeing 737-800 = Thomson Airways
2x Airbus A320-200 = Monarch Airlines
3x Boeing 737-800 = Ryanair.com
9x Boeing 737-300 = Jet2.com
1x Boeing 737-800 = Jet2.com
4x Boeing 757-200 = Jet2.com

I suppose one option is to park the 2x spare back-up Jet2 aircraft either over at Multiflight or down in the Pan.....

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

LBA has 24 aircraft stands so that leaves 2 spare.

Don't forget that some of the aircraft will be returning to LBA late at night/early in the morning so the stands will be free for the non based aircraft to use, such as flybe.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

LBA has 20 parking stands. Stands 2 and 4 no longer exist and 20 and 23 are class B stands that when in use block stands 19 21 and 22 24 respectively

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I understand jet2 will technically double park on the remote stands so more aircraft can get in basically you can park on the taxiway in the remote stand area

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Three aircraft will be able to park overnight at holding points N2, N3 (around stands 19-24) and N4 (taxiway November). It's not ideal but nothing else can be done now. ASU will be busy bees escorting various service providers on and off the a/c through the night. The problem is the a/c parked here will be situated on live taxiways so you cannot just drive up to them.

I think there really needs to be at least another 4 738/A320 stands built very soon. If you look at lbaspotter's list I could easily see an extra a/c from TOM, ZB & FR in 2014 and that doesn't include potential new operators!

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Just to add to the previous post about asu needing to escort people out to aircraft. There are procedures in place to turn the bit of taxiway between N3 and N4 into an extended bit of stand 19- 24 apron. This means that no escorting will be required.

Of course people will need escorting out to aircraft at N2. Unless they have an RT certificate.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
