OK, I will start the bandwagon rolling seeing as I have got nothing else better to do on a Friday morning. (Can’t even see the aircraft it’s that cloudy!).

So, we have pulled off a major coup and have landed the Chinese Olympic athletics team to train in Leeds next Summer (well done Leeds City Council of whoever). You know what’s coming now....is there just a teeny weeny chance that they may actually fly the whole team into LBA direct????

They have a lot of A330’s in China, and as we all know we can handle them quite comfortably. Would be really handy for them as well as the Beckett’s Park campus can only be 4 miles away tops.
While on the subject of the Olympics, wouldn’t it be nice if someone like Easyjet could put some special flights on to Southend next Summer

Hasn't MAN already signed a contract with a Chineses airline to land the aircraft there?

I saw that this morning as well on BBC LookNorth. I think they said the full story would be on tonight's show at 1830.
I think that if they don't make their way into LBA, a lot of flights will be going into MAN. Don't forget though there are a lot of people to fly over from China and into the Leeds area. It's not just the Olympic Team, there are trainers, physio’s and the Chinese Press will ultimately fly into the UK, possibly Leeds to follow their progress.

In addition, China hosted the last Olympic Games and so for Leeds to secure China is a great prospect for the City of Leeds to thrive on.

Does anyone know if all the countries temporarily 're-locate' to a city in the UK. E.g., do the USA team train in Bristol and the Australian team train in Nottingham etc.?!

Anyway here's a small article:

[textarea]China to train its athletes in Yorkshire for 2012

Published on Friday 12 August 2011 06:00

THE most successful nation at the last Olympic Games is to base its preparations for London 2012 in Yorkshire.

China, which won more gold medals than any other country at the 2008 Games in Beijing, will warm up in this region.
The Chinese track team – including 2004 Olympic 110m hurdles champion Liu Xiang – has already agreed to use the facilities at Leeds Metropolitan University.

And 10 more sporting teams from China will converge on Yorkshire, with the table tennis team – which won eight out of the 12 medals on offer in Beijing – using Leeds University, the mountain biking squad utilising Dalby Forest in the North York Moors and the equestrian team based at Bishop Burton College in East Yorkshire.

Not sure ls27. I hope not. I would like to think that KLM could pick up a some of this traffic.

I bet the Chinese restaurants in Leeds are rubbing their hands as well!!

I've known about this for a long while now, I thought it was already out there as news. The Chinese Team will be based in Leeds and will be training in Leeds, including Leeds Met Headingley Campus and I thought the John Charles Centre, although the article above doesn't mention that? Most teams will spend time in their host cities for training and PR reasons prior to the main event.

Just to add as well, I have heard the Dutch are in Leeds as well as the Chinese ahead of the Olympics. I can't see them all fitting on a Fokker 70....

Now that the city has gotten the athletes, can't the airport pull out all the stops in order to get the aircraft? It makes more sense to bring the athletes into Leeds rather than flying 60 miles further into MAN then bussing them those 60 miles back to their Leeds accomodation. Also, I often see China Air Cargo 747's at MAN, so what's wrong with using them to bring all the sporting equipment into LBA? Plenty of time to make the preparations!

2012 Olympic teams in Yorkshire prior the games so far confirmed are listed below. They maybe other teams coming as well, I do know that one unnamed team is intrested in basing it's self in Bradford as well..

China, Entire Olympic team = Leeds
Netherland, Swim Team = Leeds
Serbia, Entire Olympic team = Leeds and Sheffield
United States, Diving team = Sheffield
Brazil, Judo team = Sheffield
Gambia, Entire Olympic team = York
Guinea-Bissau, Entire Olympic team= York

You would have hoped that the Council, and Met University, in 'selling' Leeds to the Chinese, would also have done the same with regard to them flying into LBA, but there again, knowing the Council and its lethargy about the airport, probably not. And if LBA didn't get in there straight away to secure Chinese flights, I am sure that MAN would have done so with much delight. I just hope that we get some flights of interest at LBA out of the Olympics, although I do expect the Chinese to fly into either LHR or MAN and then be bussed to Leeds.

I wonder if we may now see some Russian and Canadian airline action at LBA next summer in the lead up to next summer's London 2012 Olympic & Paraolympic Games?

As the Russian Diving Team has announced that it will be using Leeds as its pre olympic training base as well as doing some earlier training in February as well.

Meanwhile the Canadian Paraolympic wheelchair rugby team has announced that it will be using Leeds University as its pre Paraolympic training.

It looks like LBA may see quite a variant, diverse range of airlines and aircraft heading their way in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics.

If an airline however wants to bring a large aircraft over, what's the likelihood it will be sent to either MAN or DSA....?

MAN has apparently got the contract for the Chinese and American aircraft. I'd be surprised if the Dutch used another airport given the KLM services.

Not surprising really given the existing Chinese freight flights and numerous schedule US flights.

Our best bet might be the Russians. An AirTransat A330 would also be nice to see. And didn't we land a Serbian team as well?

Olympic Teams so far confirmed for Yorkshire in 2012 warm ups

China, Entire Olympic team = Leeds
Netherland, Swim Team = Leeds
Serbia, Entire Olympic team = Leeds and Sheffield
United States, Diving team = Sheffield
Brazil, Judo team = Sheffield
Gambia, Entire Olympic team = York
Guinea-Bissau, Entire Olympic team= York
Russia, Diving Team = Leeds
Canadian, Paraolympic wheelchair rugby team - Leeds
Tanzania, Entire Olympic Team = Bradford & Leeds
Vietnam Entire Olympic Team = Bradford

I had no idea the list was that big Lbaspotter!

Given the amount of different nationalities using the airport, the likelihood of seeing something different at LBA now looks quite high...

I read somewhere that MAN had signed an agrement with the Chinese to bring in the Olympic Team just after it was known that they would be coming to Leeds.

I don't want to put a damper on this, but I think you will find that they will use scheduled services into LBA or fly to MAN/LHR then by bus.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
