INFO BHX Summer 1992 UK based Airlines Part 2 other airlines

Birmingham European continue with its fleet of 4 1-11-400`s and 2 serviceable J31`s at BHX.The third J31 is being restored to flying condition for August, and the remaning Gulfstream 1 is thought to be close to flying again. These restorations may be connected to a recent decision to commence ops at Humberside due to start in September.
There is talk that Fokker 100`s are most likely to replace the elderly and often unreliable 1-11`s.
The BEA Summer timetable is as follows,
Amsterdam......Thrice daily Mon-Fri,plus 2 on Sat/Sun
Belfast..............Five daily,plus 3 on Sat and Sun
Copenhagen....Twice daily Mon-Fri,plus one on Sun
Cork.................Daily service
Dublin...............Daily service
Geneva............Saturday service
Milan Linate.....Twice daily,plus one each on Sat/Sun
Newcastle........Four daily Mon-Fri
Rome...............Saturday service
Stuttgart...........Daily service,except Sat
Belfast has had a further increase, although some weekend flights are J31 operated.Dublin has replaced the former ex-SAS service from CPH.BEA offers a through service from/to CPH ex DUB.GVA is retained for Winter 91/92.Cork has a 1-11 service on Sunday.BEA is not involved in JER services this Summer, but is still doing the Saturday Munich IT service and operates MUC-BRS-MUC in between its sectors from/to BHX.

Brymon European Airways is the name for the new company with the Plimsoll Line to combine the existing activities of BEA and Brymon Airways of Plymouth.Little is known about the merger,as nothing has been announced since the merger was unveiled. We do know the HQ will be Plymouth Airport, which is owned by Brymon, and that BEA`s admin staff will be transfered there. In return Dash 8 maintenance is expected to be transfered to BHX.Redundancies are to be made amongst management grades in both airlines, indeed the Brymon MD has already left.No announcements have been made regarding routes or equipment changes.

British Midland has 2 aircraft based here this Summer. One DC9-10 is used on weekdays on 3 BRU sectors, with one JER rotation at lunchtime. At weekends it does mainly JER services, with a single trip to BRU with DC9-30`s and 737-300`s sometimes used on weekend JER flights..The LHR service must be under threat, because of BMA`s desire to increase it`s European services from LHR.A lack of available LHR slots led them to drop the LPL-LHR service, and possibly MME or LBA may be next.BMA `s BHX and EMA services see both DHC7 and ATP aircraft used, with several weekday flights serving both airports.

Jersey European have further increased BHX services this Summer, with Belfast Harbour now served 5 times daily on weekdays, and 3 each on Sat/Sun.Jersey is served daily on weekdays, and twice daily at weekends. When the F27 is in JER it does a JER-BOH-JER sector aswell during the week.GUE has been dropped as a destination.F27`s are used on every BHX service, although occasionally a Short 360 covers for maintenance.

Manx Airlines operate twice daily to BHX on weekdays, with a daily flight at weekends in Summer.Weekday flights are normally SD360 operated, but ATP`s are used frequently, and the temporary loss of an ATP resulted in a BAF 1-11 being used for 4 weeks, visiting BHX several times. At weekends ATP`s are the norm, with their BAE 146 often appearing on Saturdays.

Loganair were given the BHX-GCI licence at the start of April, and it is operated on a daily frequency by MAN based ATP on a GCI-BMA-EMA-GCI circuit, between MAN-GCI and GCI-MAN sectors. At weekends however BHX and EMA are served by separate flights as 2 ATP`s are available from MAN.

Airtours International have an MD83 based on a busy week`s flights for Airtours Holidays, the aircraft normally exchanges with others from the MAN fleet on a weekly basis. The Monday pm and Friday am service to Beavais stopped at the end of July, due to poor loads, and pax are now trasfered to EMA to be carried on an Air Toulouse Caravelle.

Air 2000 has two 757`s based at BHX this Summer, one of which has to be EROPS to operate the Sunday Orlando service for Unijet Holidays in place of the planned American Transair Tristar. Both aircraft are fully committed with 32 flights per week between them.

Air UK Leisure have one 737-400 based mainly operating for Unijet Holidays, part of the same group.Resident plane has been brand new G-UKLG since 29/4/92,but the aircraft is often borrowed on Tuesdays by the other UKL bases, when our plane has no flights.

Britannia has a large BHX programme this year, with one 767,one 757 and 2 737-200`s based. The 767 does two trips a week to Orlando, aswell as Med and Canaries services. The Tuesday USA flight operates via GLA.The 767 is resident on a 3 week cycle, whilst the 757 normally exchanges with the EMA aircraft on Saturdays at EMA.

Aurigny Air Services use their solitary Short 360 from/to JER on Sunday lunchtimes.

Business Air have recently started a Saturday lunchtime service from/to JER using their newly aquired ex Swedair SAAB 340 on the first two services.

Dan Air have two weekly I.T. services,on Tuesdays a 1-11-500 operates from/to ALC,the aircraft starting at LGW,normally one of 3 remaing IT configured G-BJYL/M/BJMV,whilst on Saturday afternoons a NCL based 737-400 operates f/t AGP,being 1 of G-BNNK/BNNL/BSNW

Inter European were th have had an aircraft based here during the Summer, but with seat availability far outweighing demand, some pruning was needed ,with several services operating a combined load with other airports.Flights at present are as follows,
Tues 733 t/f HER 1055/2105 aircraft positions f/t EMA
Weds 733 f MAN t SKG 0845/0915
733 f SKG t MAN 1820/1855

BHX LOG/INFO August 1982,

August was again a record month for passengers with 207,259 using the airport,an increase of 9.4% on 1981.Apart from September 1979 this is an all time record.
Charters were very poor in August.Aviaco operated the second, return, school party flight on 9/8 with DC-9 EC-BYH f/t BCN,and NLM used F-27 PH-KFD from AMS 20/8 stopping until 22/8.Local pop group UB40 used BAF VIP Herald G-BDFE for a European trip,it psitioned from SEN 26/8 to take them to Malaga via La Rochelle, then flying AGP-FRA and returning here on 30/8 from FRA and back to SEN.
Italian Air Force DC-9-32 MM62012/31-12 was f/t Rome Ciampino on 18/8 to collect a Pancreas for a transplant operation.Project Orbis DC-8 N220RB left for STN,and an engine change on 9/8.
BMA sub-chartered BAF Herald G-BEYD 6/8 to operate to Guernsey and back, positioning f/t SEN.They also had problems when Heathrow Fokker G-BAUR went U/S on 2/8,and SD330 G-BJFK operated EMA-BHX-LHR and return, while the Fokker went to EMA for repairs. The same SD330 came vack on 14/8 to fly a LHR rotation.
Metropolitan also sub-chartered,using Casair Titan G-PATT MAN-Bournemouth 17/8,and Loganair`s Twin Otter G-BGEN covered for maintenance 31/8.British Airtours had a sick 737 on 21/8,so Trident 3 G-AWZN was used from BA from LHR to operate to Palma and back, returning to LHR on 22/8.Another Trident,G-AWZI,deputised for a sick 1-11 on 29/8,operating to Paris and back, again coming f/t LHR.Lack of a working Jet fuel bowser at Coventry lead Air Commuter to position Bandeirante G-RLAY f/t COV late on 25/8 for fuel.Flight time was 4 minutes !

BHX LOG/INFO October 1982,

Passenger figures for October were up 19.5% to 154,213 mainly due to the lack of night time runway closures which reduced the 1981 figures, but on the other hand the Motor Show and several charters were a help.
BA have finally announced the formation of a new Birmingham division to run services from here as a largely autonomous unit.According to BA the BHX routes lost £3.4 million in the 1981/2 financial year, but the new division hopes to turn this into a profit of £200,000 in 82/3 and up tp £1.2 million in 83/4.General Manager will be Captain Rod Clarke, formerly Flight Manager Midlands.6 1-11`s are to be based permanently,3 539`s and 3 400`s.Flight to ABZ,AMS,BFS,DUB,EDI,GLA,DUS,FRA and CDG will be maintained, with CPH retained until April, from when it will be offered as a connection at MAN off the MAN/ABZ flight.A new service to Nice will be flown next Summer once weekly mainly for I.T. pax, whilst the local 1-11`s will operate I.T,`s to Rimini or Venice,Reus,Munich,Gerona,IBZ,ALC,Naples and Milan for Enterprise,Sovereign and Martin Rooks.
A new service is Genair`s Norwich-BHX-LPL and v.v.,which operates twice weekly Tues and Thurs in the morning returning afternoon as EN147/8.First service was on 26/10 eih E110 G-RLAY.
October was a bumper month for charters, biggest of course were the Wardair flights to Canada. On 23/10 747 C-GXRD positioned from ORY to operate WD861 to Montreal Mirabel and YYZ.119 extra pax were brought up from LGW in DA 1-11 G-BJMV WD805 to join the flight. The 1-11 stayed until 26/10 when it went to IBZ,while the Wardair pax returned on 747 C-FDJC 29/10 WD804 YYZ-LGW.
SAS DC-9 OY-KGA operated thr return of last months SAS charter on 2/10 f/t ARN,while Aston Villa flew to BUH on BY 737 G-BJCV 18/10,returning 20/10.Dan-Air HS748 G-AXVG positioned from BFS 6/10 to operate to DUS and back, ferrying out to LPL.
Charters for the Motor Show were DAT FH-227 OO-DTD 19/10 f/t BRU,20/10 Transavia 737 PH-TVH and Martinair DC-9 PH-MAR both f/t AMS,Dan-Air HS748 G-BIUV from EDI,out to LPL,with DA/Centreline E110 OY-ASL also from EDI,out to LTN.21/10 Air Ecosse E110 G-DATA from ABZ,positioning out to BQH,with G-POST operating the return BQH-ABZ.22/10 KLM DC-9 PH-DNV f/t AMS.
The BIA 1-11 charter to Jersey was operated by G-AXOX,which positioned in from LGW,while Inter City also flew a Jersey charter the same day with Viscount G-BDRC which came in from CDG.Both aircraft returned on 24/10 G-AXOX JER-LGW and G-BDRC JER-EMA.Finally DA/Centreline E110 G-CTLN flew a charter to NCL and back 26/10 positioning from GLA and to LTN.
Of the regular operators Dan-Air introduced 737`s onto their DA2593/4 f/t AGP for the late season, with G-BKAP in use 14 and 21/10.Another DA visitor was 1-11 G-AXCP which is on lease to BMA and called on the BD1576/9 f/t JER 30/10 and 31/10.Also on lease to BMA is F-27 G-BAKL of Air UK,this arrived from EMA 31/10 to operate to BRU the next day and should be around till the end of the year.NLM substituted F-28 PH-CHF for the regular F-27 f/t AMS 16/10,while finally was the first visit of a BAE 146 on 16/10,when G-SSSH TIBBET 37 did some overshoots and touch and goes f/t Hatfield.
Most of the I.T. flights ended late in the month. The last LZ TU154 on 16/10 left via NCL.The Spantax CV990 series ended 29/10 with a change to a DC8-63 EC-CZE,while Wardair missed a DC10 service on 7/10 with pax sent up to PIK on DA 1-11 G-BJYM to join another flIght there due to a U/S DC10.

Yes I agree many thanks Elmdon.

As an ancient member of the forum my first visits to Elmdon as it was called were in the late fiftys or the beginning of the sixties I'm not actually exactly sure as I was a young child we could walk to the airportfrom our house. My first flight was in a Dragon Rapide on a short pleasure flight which operated at weekends inthe summer I must have enjoyed it as I persuaded my parents to let me do it again a few weeks later.

The diversion days in the late sixties/seventies were a sight indeed with Viscounts,Vanguards, Trident, 707s, VC10s and later BOAC 747s etc parked everywhere never to be repeated.

Thanks for your excellent reports. Simon.

I certainly remember seeing an Aero 145 at BHX, in fact I think one was based for a while. I really liked it, with it's rounded nose and the top half of the cabin completely enclosed in glass.
I also remember enjoying being at BHX, when the south (especially LHR) was blanketed in fog. The short runway (06/24) would be closed and used for parking, with mostly Tridents, B707's and VC-10's. I wish I'd had a good camera outfit in those days.

Kevin

I also remember the Aero 145 blue and white I think 🤔

I particularly recall the DH Chipmunk reg G-AOFF as I recall and the flying school Tri-Pacers, the areo club and the cafe in the viewing area back when spotters were made welcome.

Happy days.

I remember spending many, many hours in that cafe, sat at one of the tables by the window. Although in the cafe, we always took packed lunches however, I think we bought drinks from there. I also remember that the cafe had double glazing with the inner glazing being in slide-able aluminium frames set some way back from the outer glazing (about 6-7 inches). For some reason, we decided to open one of these and I was immediately hit by an overpowering vile stench of stale cigarette smoke. I was nearly sick on the spot.
It was a long journey from Bloxwich (bus/train/bus), yet got excited as the bus approached the airport along the Coventry road. As the terminal and apron came into view, we were usually met with a Viscount,a couple of One-Elevens, a Britannia B737-200 and maybe a Dan-Air B727. But there was always still hope of something unusual during the rest of the day.
If we were lucky, my Dad would come to pick us up in the evening and spend an hour or so there with us. If not, it was public transport back home but always with a stop at Beatties model shop above New Street station. My Nan would have given us some spending money and this usually went on a model kit.

I think it was G-AROE remember it lived in hanger 1 & it’s amazing what you can remember off the top of your head from 50 years ago…. But now where did I put my glasses 😄
Yes, G-AROE rings a bell(y)

Kevin
Yes, definitely G-AROE, and always in the far corner of hanger No.1. On rare occasions it was trundled out for a spin.
The Tiger Moth i recall was G-ANKK i think!. It was a long time ago!.
I also remember well the cafe in the terminal, with the secondary glazed windows. Great for a close up view of the action!.

I don't want detract from Simon's good work but he missed a diversion on 18 December 1972 - G-AXNC B737 Briannia A/W, EMA div to PMI. That was my honeymoon flight!

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
