only just found them but there are some gorgeous shots posted here over last few weeks. My favorites have to be those dc-10s, very majestic and so different to the endless a320 and b737 these days (I suppose we do have b787 though)

787 is a fat 737 to me. Give me A350's anytime
I've flown on B737's (-200, -300, -400, -500 and -800), B767 and B777's. To me, they're all the same design on a different scale (I did like the B737-200, especially sitting behind the wing and watching the thrust reversers on landing). They got the job done, but were largely dull. I've never flown on the B787 or A350, but the A350 certainly appeals over the B787. I have flown on the A330 (EK, BHX - DXB - BHX) and I loved it. Much more so than the B777. The Qantas B767 (AKL - SYD) was also enjoyable.
The Boeing that really excelled, was the 747 (I've flown on the -100, -200 and -400). I've also flown on the A380, which was superb.

I've never flown on a Tristar, but I did fly on a DC-10 (Laker Airways G-AZZD 'Western Belle'), as a very excited 10 year old (LGW - JFK) and have loved DC-10's ever since. I even got a flightdeck visit.
I flew a Caledonian TriStar from Gatwick to Menorca and got a cockpit visit, same on BA 747/777s to JFK. I even got invited into the first class lounge at JFK just so I could take a look at the Concorde parked at the gate. Those were the days!

I was on a Caledonian TriStar from Gatwick to Arrecife in October 89. In the heady days of being able to smoke in the last few rows of the plane. Shortly after take off, the cabin crew flew down the aisles to the back (where I was seated on the last row) and used orange juice to put a small fire out in the toilets. The captain then came over the p.a. and scolded the passengers in the smoking section...all eyes seemed to be on me....I hadn't even been to the loo. All's well that ended well and the cabin crew acted very quickly to extinguish the fire. Maybe they should've kept the toilet doors locked until after take off, for the one individual who just couldn't wait a few minutes! Seems like an age ago now thinking back...was only 18 at the time 😇

God it was terrible sitting in the smoking area when no other seats available and you used to smell like a kipper
when you got off lol

This brings memories of a Tristar flight from Gatwick to Goa in the first row behind the smokers in the rear cabin. Asked for the air con to be adjusted but was told it could not be because the front cabin passengers were complaining about the low temperature. Hey Ho, just a few hours before the mandatory disembark at Bahrain for refuelling and fresh air. However the Gatwick departure had been delayed, so on arrival at Bahrain, we were told we could not disembark - even assuming we wanted to get past the armed guards at the cabin door - who mentioned mandatory disembark!!!
Arrived in Goa feeling like a kipper - fortunately the return flight had no such problems.

Hey,

Does anyone have any photos of the South Terminal from the early 2000’s and can anyone confirm to me whether AllBarOne used to be a Wetherspoons around this time.

I flew to Edinburgh around 2007 on BMIBaby and I have vague memories of eating in Wetherspoons before my flight from this Terminal

Thanks in advance

Does anyone have any photos of the South Terminal from the early 2000’s and can anyone confirm to me whether AllBarOne used to be a Wetherspoons around this time.

My memory is pretty shocking but I think you may be right about Wetherspoons. Did they re-brand as All Bar One around the same time as the Wetherspoons in T1 land side? 🤔

As for the pictures I can fully recommend a browse through the incredible galleries of our very own @elmdon74 linked below, well worth a look (y)

There are others one here who also have some great pictures so hopefully they'll be able to post some.

Many (many) moons ago a colleague of mine was invited to see the diverted aircraft that had arrived here at BHX on one of the dreaded snow days when LHR (and many other assorted Airports) was blocked by bad weather. That day there were a number of BOAC VC-10's and 707's on the deck.

The main runway was being swept by the snow ploughs ready for operations to re-commence. My colleague (he would have been about 8 at the time) was standing with two of his friends (and his friends dad) on the side of the runway watching the ploughs get ready to start their manouveres when a photo was taken (without any of them knowing).

Fast forward to 2009, and I have just taken delivery of a supply of photos showing various diversions into BHX including a Cargolux CL44 (hence the username a rally nice Aircraft which seemed purpose built for it's job), various PanAm flights and some BOAC diversions. The supplier of the photos sent a couple of extras along as well (long story short there was a delay on the original order so he sent some extras buckshee), and lo and behold while we are looking through the photos in the office there is a cry of "THATS ME" and sure enough one of the photos was the one described above.

He now has a copy of that photo on display at home (I cannot talk not when I think about the photos / pictures I have on display both here at the office and at home), which is a talking point whenever he has visitors.

One of the other photos that I received was a shot of the new terminal (so post 1984) with 2 x British Airways 747's and 2 x Virgin 747's parked up on opposite sides of the terminal. This again was a diversion day (LHR & LGW must have both been out) and someone managed to get to do an overfly of the Airport just to get this shot.
So many memories from the mid 70s onwards.Remember 2 BA 747s diverting to Elmdon after LHR closed due snow.Later that day the snow moved to Birmingham. The 2 747s were parked up for at least 2 days on the Elmdon apron covered in snow.

Another time a BA Tristar had diverted in from Heathrow fog.It started to get foggy at BHX. The gent from ATC asked if the Tristar pilot could give an extra engine blast on the runway, to clear a gap for the next plane on approach.lol.

Another evening late 70s.Huge wind storm closed Manchester and all airports in the south. We were in the eye.Over 40 planes diverted to Birmingham. They had to line them up on the short runway with passengers still inside.
Hours later they were still onboard. One of the Trident pilots told ATC that unless they got steps to the plane soon passengers were threatening to force one of the doors to get out.

The Boeing that really excelled, was the 747 (I've flown on the -100, -200 and -400). I've also flown on the A380, which was superb.
To be fair they are pretty similar inside.Depends on the seating you can afford as to what you experience seating wise.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
