Cornwall Newquay Airport has closed for everything except 'vital' services' that include the Cornwall Air Ambulance, HM Coastguard Search and Rescue and military operations.

The temporary suspension of all passenger flights is the result of "the impact of current Government guidelines on demand". It is not known when the airport will reopen to passenger services.

Boris announced today the G7 2021 summit will be in Cornwall this year. Not been released yet where in Cornwall it will be held, but not too many places to choose from. The airport better get it self open and get the decorators in. They have a nice long runway with plenty of aircraft parking. We must not forget RAF Culdrose is not far away from Newquay It should be some good buisness for Newquay.

I saw an interview with Tim Jeans on the BBC's News 24 Channel at teatime. He is chairman of the company that runs NQY and is also a former managing director of Monarch Airlines and former commercial director with Ryanair amongst other previous aviation posts.

He was asked about the situation with the industry and specifically how NQY is managing. The airport is closed for commercial traffic at the moment, as mentioned recently in the NQY forum, and he expects this year to see a slow recovery in the first part of the summer period which should increase in momentum around July.

He again made a plea so often heard from the industry during the pandemic that air passenger duty be relaxed and gave as an example someone flying from Manchester to Newquay and then back to Manchester. Such a journey would attract £13 in APD on both journeys and Tim Jeans suggested that levying this charge on only one leg would be of considerable help to the industry.

Looks like the G7 will not be in Cornwall. By what has been said in the dried plum that some one jumped the gun by saying Cornwall for the G7 this time.
I wonder who is right.??

The announcement that this years G7 summit will be held at Carbis Bay near St Ives, Cornwall June 11 - 13th will present a major boost to Newquay Airport i would imagine. A visit from the new US President Joe Biden et all.

One of the things that can be neglected is that sometimes the bilaterals in place often limit which airports can be served. Not every country signed up to EU-"them" open-skies treaties and so the old "UK-"them" bilateral is in place. From what I remember, the UK-Taiwan bilateral offered up London only originally but was updated to allow Manchester operations. Back in the day, it was either Air Jamaica or BWIA that were restricted to flying to London or Prestwick only so the had to lobby to get the bilateral altered to allow Manchester to be served.

Even what would appear to be the straightforward Biman operating Dhaka-BHX-JFK couldn't actually be done as though the Bangladeshi and UK authorities didn't mind, it was the USA that put the block on as they refused to allow Biman the right to transfer the "intermediate" 5th freedom point from Manchester to Birmingham. BHX would have been served as purely Dhaka-BHX-Dhaka with a timetable akin to arriving one day and departing over 24 hours later with the aircraft having operated to/from JFK in between times.

Virgin Orbit successfully put a satellite into orbit on the 17th. They'll be moving to Newquay eventually and operating from there.

With edelweiss landing this week, NQY has a good mix of airlines this year with 9 serving this little airport.
Also Jet2 last couple of weeks from Manchester. Don’t see that listed but that would have been three airlines from Manchester!

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
