Malaga & Tenerife flights are definite, hints of more routes as well. Also Houchen said they are expected an airline based operations from 2026.
Houchen stated in his business case (revamped post covid) a low cost operator would have been in place by 2023…I’d take anything he says with a large pinch of salt.!
Add to that the fact that all the Teesside Councils are all now Labour controlled and a Labour government will likely be overseeing whatever he does after the Autumn his wings will be certainly clipped. Thats assuming he even manages to remain in officer once Labour review his dealings….

But he has accomplished that point as Ryanair operate out of the Airport

I can’t comment on his other points regarding the airport but that one is correct is it not?

No he stated a low cost carrier base would be in place ie they had aircraft & crew on the ground based at the airport…...

Six RAF/ Qatar Air Force Hawk MkII's from RAF Leeming have moved to Teesside for the next week whilst runway upgrades are completed.
Runway upgrades at a now non-frontline airfield? The death knell for any air force base some would say…

Planning application submitted for 5G Digital Test Bed facility for Customs processes.
TVCA / Teesside University study with results being fed back into the UK Border Strategy.
This will be built on triangle piece of land behind the Airbourne Colours hangars.

Teesside International Airport has reported its first profit in more than a decade after growth in passenger numbers and successful Business Park developments helped it move back into the black.

Accounts for the year to March 2024 confirmed an EBITDA* of £308,555 on annual revenues of £14.5million.

Behind a paywall so I can’t read it but for anyone who may have access;

Any idea what the context is? Is it BH running his mouth off?
It’s Houchens team just bulling stuff up as usual….this is a more balanced article and paints a very different picture. Reading between the lines passenger numbers and airlines remain well below projections (he did promise a low cost carrier base would be operational by now) and they have and will have continued difficulties attracting them. Emphasis seems to be switching away from passenger routes to cargo and ancillary aviation activities….Hence the need for a new strategic review…https://travelweekly.co.uk/news/air...for-teesside-airport-despite-return-to-profit

This is what they said about jet2…..so in essence they are taking to them as no doubt every other airport in the UK not currently served by jet2 are…..

He said: “We’re speaking to all the usual suspects as you’d expect because the airport is reborn and we want to take it on the next phase of its trajectory.”
Mr Forster confirmed that the airport was seeking to bring budget airline Jet2 to Teesside, as well as expand the number of routes with current operators Ryanair and TUI”.

I don’t think it’s appropriate to publicly announce that you’re in talks with or attempting to attract an airline and name them. Wonder whether Jet2 have picked up on it.

Either way, this ‘return to profitability’ actually looks more like a reduction in losses. The strategic review will be interesting indeed, and will no doubt mention Covid along side delays in aircraft deliveries. Meanwhile airlines are expanding elsewhere (where they actually want to expand!) so it’s just papering over the cracks again. There’s a reason HUY aren’t apparently targeting airline growth, and arguably for the time being at least, HUY has a bigger untapped market.

Whenever Houchen & Foster have spoken this year they have always said in generally that we are talking to all manner of airlines such as your Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 etc but also with other airlines from overseas. We are talking to them and would like to see them all at the airport.

Also what they have said previously is we are getting requests all the time from passengers/ public asking when are we getting Jet2 etc in. So we have talks with airlines saying that large numbers of people are wanting for your airline here, so it shows there is a demand wanting to use your airline.

ITV Tyne Tees done a really good story. Certainly worth a watch.

The “return to profitability” is highly questionable…..Turnover for 2022/23 was £15.5m and for 2023/24 it was £14.5m - down £1m! The airport also declared an operating loss of £3m for 2023/24. It will be interesting to see the full audited accounts which have yet to be released.

On the subject of jet2 - it f you look at every airports whether they be currently open or closed there is a bevy of people asking the same question as to when they will be operating from there! The Teesside region for jet2 is already well served by two jet2 basis - it would make little of no financial sense to dilute that market….

For airlines like Jet2 they are now in a position where they could open a base at pretty much any airport and fill their flights. It’s about justifying the expense of doing so that is the problem and I do not believe opening a base or having any commercial operations from Teesside is likely to show sufficient returns for them IMO. They need to manage expectations and hopefully this mid point strategic review will do that.

It is in every airlines interest to have as many airport available as possible, but it doesn't mean they'll use them.

Maybe - I do hear on the grapevine that Liverpool isn’t performing as expected for them….

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?
