The problem with Norwich is that whilst they have no loco based operator and quite a few well off folk roundabout, the general population in Norfolk is quite sparce, and anywhere South of the Norwich area might just as well go to Stansted. It would be quicker too as there is the A14, which is dual carriageway. Heading up into Norwich and across to the airport North of the City, takes forever.

The owners of Norwich have also been applying a tax on passengers aimed at collecting money to aid the airports development, but all it has done is drive their main operator, Flybe, to cut many of their flights and as a result their pax figures are well down. Flybe are nowhere near as aggressive as Ryanair and I can't imagine Mr O'Leary going into an airport that applies its own tax on top of those enforced by the Government. Even Flybe have admitted that Norwich is suffering at the hands of Stansted. If Ryanair were to go in there, they would inevitably lose some of their own passengers who currently fly with them from Stansted, so its hard to see how it would be worth the investment or risk.

Given the inability of DSA to hold on to what they had, obviously due to the poor location, again it would seem a rather odd choice if they opened a base. They have pulled their Dublin route which is hardly the sort of thing to do if you are considering opening a base there although they have a 'relationship' with Peel Holdings via Liverpool, so both DSA and MME could be options based purely on doing a 'deal'. I am certain though that they would far prefer LBA which has proved that it can pull in the passengers and keep them - DSA and MME have proved they are struggling to do so as both were losing airlines and passengers even before the economic downturn.

Perhaps it will turn out to be somewhere completely different that nobody thought of - somewhere like Glasgow perhaps. They said UK, so it may not be in England.

Still no idea's then when MOL is going to reveal. Did he say he would announce within a timescale or not?

I definately cannot see DSA getting them based, think we can disregard that, even LBA has better chances!

That sounds like excellant news.
However, I'm not sure how much extra passenger traffic it will bring, I assume they will mostly be competing with the same popular routes as Jet 2 currently operate, which won't create many extra passengers but will make it tougher operating conditions for Jet 2. If they do use it to bring in new routes then that would be a good thing, but how many popular destinations are remaining that Jet 2 don't operate already?

Nice scoop eastcoaster!

[textarea]BREAKING: Jobs boost as Ryanair announces new Leeds Bradford Airport base

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary was at the airport to make the announcement, which the Dublin-based airline said would have a "significant impact" on the Yorkshire region.

It is a major boost to the airport, which is on course to almost double in size after planners recently gave permission for a £28 million development.

The scheme includes upgrading the terminal, which would also feature a new two-storey extension to accommodate a new airside departure lounge.

Ryanair, the World’s favourite airline, today (11th Aug) announced it would open its 34th base at Leeds Bradford in March 2010 with two based aircraft and 14 new routes (17 in total) being launched. Ryanair will offer 63 weekly return flights to/from Leeds Bradford in an investment worth over $140 million in the airport.

Ryanair’s 14 new routes from Leeds Bradford to Carcassonne, Faro, Ibiza, Knock, Krakow, Limoges, Malaga, Malta, Montpellier, Murcia, Nantes, Palma, Pisa and Venice Treviso will increase Ryanair’s traffic at Leeds Bradford to 1 million passengers p.a. which will create and sustain 1,000 well paid local jobs in Yorkshire.

Ryanair celebrated its new Leeds Bradford base, two new aircraft, 17 routes and 1million passengers by releasing 1 million £5 seats for travel across its European network for travel in October and November which are available for booking on

Ryanair claim to compete with the other airlines but in reality they tend to set up completely new routes. This is fantastic news for Leeds and the news comes at a time when Leeds definately needs it most.

Nice variety of routes too, only too good. Some going to compete direct with jet2 and some more specialised places. Fantastic line up for the new 2010 season.

Looking at the details it is looking like very good news. If more local passengers can be clawed back from using other airports then that will be genuine growth, and looking at the new routes listed that should happen, as well as attracting some entirely new business.

Well its been coming and coming and at last its arrived - a Ryanair base. Great News and I think this confirms why Phillip Meeson was less than happy about the terminal. It has obviously allowed the airport to do a better deal with Ryanair, although I do hope they match that deal with Jet2 and the two can compete on equal terms. The new routes are great. The 'competition' routes with Jet2 are great if they pull in the passengers we currently lose to LPL, MAN, EMA etc, provided it doesn't harm Jet2's position. Perhaps this now explains the decision by Jet2 to reduce its Krakow flights by 50% next summer!

Excellent news for LBA, anyone think the previous announcement regarding high charges was a bargaining plea so that they didnt run off to DSA or MME?

I just hope PM doesnt get the hump and move a couple of aircraft down the road. Im sure there is plenty of room for the both of them.

Thanks for the vote of confidence 'Pug' and 'Red Dug' our friends from Prestwick and Humberside. Hopefully next year we will see a new lease of life in Humberside airport which is still grossly underserved with the catchment of Hull by it's side. (Good to see you back online Pug!)

Although I'm not a big f an (that forum censor again) of Ryanair, as I've said more than once on forums4airports, I realise that when they operate smoothly (most of the time, I suspect) they are a boon to many people and bring in passengers to an airport by the sackload.

The news today is excellent news for LBA provided that in time Ryanair doesn't attempt to smother Jet2.

In a couple of years or so LBA will join the group of airports in the 5-6 mppa range - BFS, BRS, EMA, LPL and NCL - or top half of the Championship as I always think of them in football terms. It may be that in the next decade LBA will turn out to be best placed of these airports to reach the Premier League.

Keeping to the football analogy it shows again how effective a good manager can be - in this case John Parkin and Tony Hallwood (Clough and Taylor?), men with track records of getting a League One airport into the Championship.

Right, which is going to be the airline for LUFC? :dunno:

Apologies to those who don't like football and find this post gobbledegook.

the airline for LUFC will be the one that lives on past glories and ends up with only one ageing aircraft in loads of debt on the brink of collapse. oh and a nutty pilot that looks like santa!

Much appreciated aviador, any Yorkshire airline investment is good at the moment in my opinion...

I hope they havent done a Leeds United and bought FR in, they'l be relegated to the 'Kent Manston Coventry Carlisle Southend' league before you know it :tease:

Notably the new schedule will provide a revised Dublin service operated by the Leeds based aircraft. The early morning flight will depart Leeds at 06:15 arriving in Dublin at 07:15. Return flights leave Dublin at 07:40 returning to Leeds at 08:40. The evening flight are scheduled to depart Leeds at 21:40 landing in Dublin at 22:40. The return service leaves Dublin at 23:05 returning to Leeds at 25:59.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
