Well I hope now that User001 is right and that Ryanair are not interested in Berlin from LBA - because Jet2 have just announced the route today, starting June 2012, 3 times a week. The news about Ryanair sounds really promising - could be a big week for route announcements - but lets hope that they find something different to operate rather than duplicating what we already have with Jet2 - unless of course it is a sun route with loads of potential for both.

It's an interesting point about duplicating what LBA already has. When I spent some time with the airport management recently, they mentioned that the latest data was showing that just one route was currently available from LBA where capacity was adequately meeting local demand. It's a route served by Ryanair and Jet2, so feel free to have guess.

So in terms of clawing back passengers they are just as focussed on beefing up capacity on routes already served from LBA as they are introducing new destinations. The charter heartlands of the Canaries, Turkey, Cyprus and Greece are particular areas of focus. Ryanair can help with the Canaries, but less so on the others - although they are gradually dipping their toe into places like Kos and Rhodes from LPL.

Whatever is happening tomorrow is closely guarded. The LBA PR team have been contacting the local media inviting them to turn up. One assumes LBA wouldn't be that co-operative if O'Leary was coming to deliver one of his "we've had a falling out" press conferences !

Re Ryanair's announcement tomorrow, if there is a German route, I'd stick a fiver on Munich, a fiver on Hahn, and as an outsider a tenner on Leipzig, which could compete with Berlin for the Dresden and Saxony market, plus Ryanair already fly there from Stansted.

Munich is one of the few airports in Germany that is not well serviced by Locos. It has a more traditional service feel about it and I would be very very surprised if Ryanair put in a flight from LBA considering they do not have any other routes out of the airport.

I would expect something Berlin oriented to compete with the Jet2 route. Hahn sounds like a good bet. As do the Polish routes and Madrid. I would not be too disappointed if frequencies on the other routes were what Ryanair has in mind as opposed to lots of new routes.

This could be a very interesting week for LBA. Let us hope that the terminal will be ready for all this potential....

I would bet on polish routes, but not Hahn and Madrid.
Hahn only seems to have worked at MAN for Ryanair, and the nest hope LBA had of getting that route was when Ryanair closed it at MAN, but even then Ryanair didn't go for it. It didn't survive that long at LPL either, very much like Bremen hasn't worked outside MAN either.

Madrid, well, given what's taking place at MAN at the moment, Ryanair could face a very tough time if they tried LBA-MAD right now, very tough indeed.

Dinard
Kos
Corfu
Riga - New for summer
Tenerife
Kaunas - New for summer
Bergamo

Disappointing for whom? Jet2 may not appreciate Bergamo but other than that, looks like what the airport were after. Greece and Canary Islands.

These are announced for winter so i expected them to be continued into summer. Therefore ryanair only really announced 4 new destinations fro LBA. I was quite surprised we never had TFS on the map from LBA. Very much think that would be a based a/c down there and not using ours. However it's an additional route. Ryanair need some serious catching up to do, with Jet2 offering 4 weekly service and TCX 1 weekly.

Kos - nice to have it back on the map. Okay with in my eyes a carrier i didn't want, but none the less its there.
Corfu - would of really been nice if we had seen something other then a sun route. Three carriers serving the market, i reckon one will leave. Was hoping ryanair could of utilised the a/c on a better market and much more year round destination.
Milan - Again head to head with Jet2. Reckon there is only one carrier for the route and since Jet2 have been doing it for ages, goodbye Ryanair who i think again could utilize the a/c on unnerved markets from LBA. Also wouldn't be surprised if this is a Milan based a/c.

Overall i'm disappointed in this offering i expected much better. Okay go head to head with Jet2 on routes - Malaga/Palma the usual sun & spade routes, however i'd like to see ryanair offering destinations and places from the eastern European market, and Italian (that Jet2 don't serve). 6 new destinations - no 4 new destinations. 3rd based a/c yes, however 2 routes will be served from there bases.

[textarea]Ryanair Adds 3rd Aircraft to Leeds Bradford Base and 6 New Routes

Just been confirmed by Leeds Bradford Airport it self on their website.

Well, Ifor one am quite disappointed at this offering.
Yes great for Leeds that a 3rd aircraft is based, but, Ryanair went straight in with 4 aircraft at MAN so Leeds is growing quite slowly by Ryanair standards.
Also, the route selection is poor in my opinion. I was expecting polish routes to compete with Wizz at DSA, but instead, all but Chania are already served at LBA.
Milan will be one of the more interesting ones. Jet2 announced MAN-BGY but pulled it as soon as Ryanair announced the same route, will they do this at LBA too?

So, in conclusion, great to have another based unit, and yes it will increase LBA's footfall, but at what expense as seen as 3 of the 'new' routes are already served? For myself, disappointing.

Wouldn't worry i'm expecting at least BGY to be cancelled by FR end of SS012, replacing with something more sustainable & more beneficial to LBA.

For gods sake, what is all the moaning about!!! We have got the 3rd based aircraft that we have been after. New routes to Chania,Dinard and Kos ( I think TCX have dropped Kos for 2012) as well which is all good.

Because bigman it's all about the bigger picture.
When you see what's happened at larger airports with larger catchments, something will give. Milan will be the case example, if Jet2 refused to compete with Ryanair at MAN, then LBA could follow.

I'm certainly not bemoaning the third based unit, that's great, I just think the route selection is hardly awe inspiring. There's nothing wrong with the opinion that they could have tried a bit harder. Jet2 is showing how to think outside the box with MAN-IST/PUL/TLV and LBA-BBI, I was just hoping Ryanair would have been a bit more competitive with it's polish routes to rival wizz at DSA, to places like Wroclow, Rszeszow or Katowice.

Great 3rd based a/c. Great 3 destinations that wouldn't ever be served by any other carrier for a few years. HOWEVER i expected a bit more imagination from FR we know. And as user001 states, polish to compete with DSA and Wizzair. If all they are going to do is duplicate Jet2 at LBA, then in my book any airline can do that and they can do one. Fair enough first year play safe, PMI, AGP, ALC, FAO, ACE, FUE yes. Second year thrid a/c expected something a little out of the box then Summer routes which will no doubt be dropped in Winter.

No one is complaining about the addition of a third aircraft and new routes. However, the routes that have been announced are very disappointing. I thought that with Jet2 giving Berlin a go, Ryanair might just offer up something a little bit more punchy. But no. There is no Scandinavia. There is no Madrid. There is no Germany. There is no Eastern Europe. BUT we do get the North of France?! And then duplication duplication duplication. This announcement shows that Ryanair have no real desire to give LBA innovation and are just interested in stealing, where possible, pax from elsewhere. It is such a shame and such a missed opportunity. It will mean that tons of pax will still disappear down the road to MAN and DSA. Sad.

This is what I am saying. Where was Poland, where was Oslo, where was Madrid. All these routes Ryanair seemed happy to open at MAN and straight in with 4 based units, but LBA seems to just be creaking up to 3 based units and quite frankly, uninspiring destinations.

When BHX was opened, Ryanair promised 10 based units and umpteen new routes. However, they quickly ran out of imagination at 4 based units and ran out of potential passengers, so haven't gone any further.

Whislt not quite as dire, could the same be happening at LBA now? Ryanair run out of imagination and only interested in stealing other airlines passengers? With bases at both ends, the routes mentioned in the first line of my post could have been easy to open, but, they don't seem interested at all?

I know what you are saying guys and gals. Yes, I would have liked to see some 'better' routes. Chania and Dinard are not duplicated routes. As I said, I think Kos has been dropped by Thomas Cook, so that route is a welcome return. If we get the Bergamo year round, then that is a plus as Jet2 only do it as a Summer route now. Extra flights to current destinations are all welcome.

To say that some destinations are uninspiring is not necessarily justified when you look at how many people are using these routes.

Good to see that there is some expansion for 2012 despite the worrying economic climate in Europe and the 3rd based unit is to be welcomed however I thought that some expansion might follow that of Edinburgh's example with routes to say Oslo, Brussels and Memmingen, perhaps Bratislavia, all of which I think would do well out of Leeds. Still, Ryanair will have done their homework and decided that these routes are not for now, maybe later. I still think that EasyJet might come in with Madrid and some German routes in the future as they are trying to develop a business orientated network as well as the usual sun routes.

Good god some people are just never happy.

We waited since June for a new route to be announced from LBA and then 7 new routes by 2 airlines confirmed within 24 hours. Is'nt that enough for some people.

Look i understand that routes to the likes of Madrid, Oslo, Copenhagen, Frankfurt will come eventually, Well one would hope so and I know the airport owners are working on it as they have even mentioned it themselves. But I think these kind of routes need to be served by the bigger legacy carriers and difference low cost carries instead of Jet2 and Ryanair all the time.
I say this just because the sheer amount of connections that the likes of Star Alliance, One-World and other ***airlines can offer to fill there aircraft via these airports instead off just relaying on just point to point punters.

PS
Please lets not make this thread go off-topic and into a Leeds vs Manchester dabate as we the moderators will not stand for any off it...

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
