Re: Monarch Aircraft Engineering.

Not to mention around £13 million on the terminal redevelopment and centralised security area.

Last I heard LED lighting was definitely being looked at and it was up to the bean counters to decide how much the huge initial cost would be offset by cheaper running costs. I haven't heard of a decision one way or the other yet.

I can remember back around the late 90's when BHX used to see semi-regular 747's bringing car parts from the USA (Tower Air Cargo and Polar Air Cargo), more recently we've seen a lot of Antonov 12's and 26's in the last couple of years bringing stuff in from Eastern Europe for JLR. We'll watch this space.

This stuff must be coming through EMA now, with DHL as JLR's primary logistics provider. Although the Ford link is gone (I assume those 747s were coming from Detroit?) there must still be significant air freight demand for JLR.

Also, what are they filling that nightly Fedex 757 with? Is it a mail service or general freight?

Re: Monarch Aircraft Engineering.

Not sure what is loaded onto the FedEx but it seems to be doing well, not long back there was talk of an occasional A300 being used.

Re: Monarch Aircraft Engineering.

Looks like the rumour of a cargo facility might be close to the truth.

Snippet from an interview with Mr Kehoe posted on the general thread.

Airlines are telling us that they want a cargo operation on site.” Having already moved the control tower from the “old and tired” Elmdon site, this could be ripe to house new development including a new business park for cargo, maintenance and support activities, and possibly a hotel. “We want to unlock it,” says Kehoe, “though we will need a new masterplan as it’s still zoned for airport development.”

Re: Monarch Aircraft Engineering.

I think most airports are in the process of updating their masterplans. I wonder if there will be more of a focus on cargo in the new BHX masterplan when it's released.

HANGAR DOOR ASSEMBLY ON MONARCH AIRCRAFT ENGINEERING’S NEW BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT FACILITY

Monarch Aircraft Engineering (MAEL), the award-winning independent aircraft maintenance provider and a division of The Monarch Group, has made significant progress in the construction of its new 110,000 sq. ft state-of-the-art maintenance facility, at Birmingham Airport in the UK.

Construction work on the hangar is well under way, with the doors now being installed. The doors, which were assembled on the hangar apron has 6 leaves in total, each measuring 22 metres in width and weighing 29 tonnes.

The doors will run on three parallel guide tracks, enabling all of the doors to enter one of the two hangar bays. This allows a clear opening of 66 metres. The doors provide compliance with the latest Part L building regulations for air leakage and are clad externally with a composite cladding panel.

Commenting on this milestone, Mick Adams, Managing Director of MAEL, said; “The pace at which the facility is coming together is quite remarkable and the installation of the doors marks the point where we have only 74 working days before the facility becomes fully operational. We are making excellent headway in the final stages preparing for the first aircraft in November and with the doors now installed the facility is looking fantastic.”

Marcus Allen, Director of Jewers Doors, said; “We are very proud to have worked on this project under John Sisk & Son Ltd constructing the main doors for MAEL’s new Birmingham MRO facility. These are the largest aircraft hangar doors to be built on a commercial facility in the UK for decades. We are confident that these new Esavian hangar doors will give as many years of reliable and safe service as their existing Esavian hangar doors have done at Luton.”

Kim Shevyn, Regional Construction Director of John Sisk & Son Ltd said; “We are delighted the way the project is coming together with the continued support from our supply chain. We are keen to continue this journey and ensure Monarch’s seamless integration into their new facility.”

Re: Monarch Aircraft Engineering.

In terms of the B787, by all accounts Monarch are less than impressed with Thomson, as after spending so much money to keep the Goldcare certificate, Thomson pulled the B787 contract and thus their maintenance will now be taken care of at Luton.

I believe LOT is their only full B787 contract now. Still looking forward to see who the B777 client could be, and also interesting to note they will accommodate the A330 at BHX but obviously have no plans to accommodate the A340 types.

After you suggested it I'm hoping it's Aeroflot :)

The original press release also stated it could/would accommodate 747's but there is no mention there.

Re: Monarch Aircraft Engineering.

The consultative committee report confirms the hangar is on schedule to accept it's first aircraft on Nov 1st. A bit about signage.

In addition, notification has been received that the proposed signage on the runway elevation of the new Monarch hangar falls within ‘enclosed land’ within the regulations and as such is excluded from planning control. Monarch’s own agents have submitted advertisement consent for proposed signage on the A45 side of the hangar.

Re: Monarch Aircraft Engineering.

The apron at the front of the hangar looks to be about ready for the markings to be painted on.

First aircraft due Nov 1st, anyone fancy a guess at what it will be?

Re: Monarch Aircraft Engineering.

I honestly think the first aircraft will be one of Monarch very own A320/A321 aircraft after a busy Summer 2013. They will need routine mainentance ready for the Winter season

Re: Monarch Aircraft Engineering.

I've got a feeling it may be something from Flybe.

A couple of pictures from the BHX photo blog showing the new signage.

Great to see it finally completed, it's certainly an impressive facility. It'll be interesting to see what the four aircraft due Monday are.
