I agree and I am sure that KLM haven't forgotten that even when they operated from Sheffield City, directly next to the two largest population centres in South Yorkshire, and right next to the M1, they couldn't even make a profit using an F50 and scrapped the service, so the chances of filling a F70 from DSA seem remote. They are profitable at HUY, where they have operated from for years, so why give that up to take a risk at DSA? I think KLM have a bit more sense than that. As we have now discovered, this was an old story, but frankly I can't see it happening any time soon for all the reasons stated above.

I think this has been blown completely out of proportion. I had posted on the KLM thread that thry had taken an Ejet into DSA last week and reason unknown. Highly likely that it will have been for training purposes, using DSAs CAT3 and due to how quiet it is at this time of year.

On the subject of KLM at HUY, the core catchment of the Humber region supports the flights, with only a tiny percentage having o&ds in South Yorkshire.. Is that really an incentive to move? Not to mention the long term agreements signed twice since DSA opened, and the fact they are soon to drop LPL.. Thats not even mentioning carriers such as SAS who have been close to an agreement with HUY in the recent past, would it really be in KLMs interest to move to an unproven market, whilst running the risk of losing their regular premium paying passengers?

hi just been on LBA webcan and seen a klm fokker surrounded by LBA fire engines any one know why

Training methods specific to the F70. With it having no rear exits.

Anyone noticed the "savvy" pricing used by KLM on this route?

Basically when I tried to book a single (to return using Jet2), then the price was astronomical (infact more than a return).

Is this to prevent you picking and choosing against Jet2 and KLM I wonder...

Nothing to do with Jet2. This has been the same for more than 30 years. Other full service airlines are usually the same. It could be even less if you booked for example LBA-AMS-HAM-AMS-LBA.

Both AIR FRANCE-KLM and LUFTHANSA have been losing money for years on European flights. Both are now looking at low cost models.

OK interesting thanks.

It certainly had the effect of preventing me using Jet2 on the return anyway!...

Needed the convenient time of KLM on the way out, but was happy to go Jet2 on the way back, but now doing both legs KLM due to cost at less suitable time on way back (not a major difference though)...

I hope they regonise the value these flights must give them on their long-haul routes though and take this into consideration... Flown long haul with KLM few times given convenience of the LBA-AMS link...

I think sometimes as many as 90% of LBA-AMS passengers are travelling onwards.I have seen this many many times. LBA-AMS is probably almost free of charge on a business class onward flight to Hong Kong for example.

If you book one-way you can only get the 'fully flex' ticket - hence it costs a fortune. For a while I thought could get cheaper one-way prices with KLM - think it was part of a trial. Maybe I imagined it!

Was there any reason you wanted to return Jet2 rather than KLM? When I last looked the prices were about the same. I'd always pick KLM given the choice, tho that may be because I'm FlyingBlue gold and so can use the lounges.

cmj, I don't really see KLM as a big attraction to Amsterdam only. I think these days as I said, Amsterdam is just a hub.I use KLM these days as a convenience only. As a Plat for life I don't need to use them to keep my status.
I am curious though about their intention to enter the low cost market.

I was purely going to come back Jet2 due to the time of the flight v KLM being a bit better for my needs. In the end now waiting an extra hour or so as wasn't going to pay for a single on KLM (need to use their flight on the way out).

I know you posted this on the BA thread however not wanting to take it off topic on there, where did you hear this?

I know I will get shot down in flames for saying this, but given the month I have had, that would be par for the course.

How will Air France/KLM react to the BA announcement (if at all)? I wonder if this might finally gee Air France up into considering a CDG service to connect into their hub to try and stop the potential leakage of interlining passengers to BA.

I can't see anything happening personally. The group announced over 5000 job are to be axed last week. Hardly the right conditions for opening new routes, but you never know....?

KLM have it sorted at LBA and i doubt they will react with a increase of frequency or a new route to CDG (AF). Remember that would probably need a mirror to the current KLM schedule of 0625 departure to get in for the first bank of departures, a lunch time service, tea time and one coming in for the night (arriving about 2030-2200).

KLM however may react by putting Fooker 100's onto the service instead of 70's on some services or even ERJ'S. Don't forget aswell LBA is KLM city hopper crew base, one of the biggest?!

I don't know where i saw it, but an advert bill board and it stated "KLM the UK's airline". Very interesting but yet soo true.

I don't think they will use F100s as they're phasing them out, but it could be they put the ERJs on. The only real 'step up' would be to move LBA from CityHopper to KLM mainline, but I don't think that's likely to happen in the near future.

Pug,

With regard to KLM low cost operations.
I made the comment when it was said that Lufthansa are very happy with their operations at Manchester with high loads and high yields, then I read this:

Lufthansa may shift a swathe of flights to a new low cost operating division with as many as 90 jets as it seeks to end years of losses on European routes. The first quarter of this year showed losses of 381m euros.

Then, in a business publication, cannot remember which one, there was an article saying that none of the full service airlines have made a profit on European routes for many many years and they just feed the profitable long haul routes. The article also revealed that Air France-KLM are looking at having a low cost arm.

Maybe this is why BA are not too concerned about missing early morning short haul connections at Heathrow, they still have plenty of long haul connections during the rest of the day.

Sorry for the inevitable thread drift.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not too sure on Lufthansa but I think as far as KLM Cityhopper is concerned, many of their routes from the UK are I believe high yielding, and provided solely for people connecting onto the rest of their network. Perhaps they are refering to their mainline 737 operations where connecting passenger numbers are probably not as high? Arent Transavia a subsidiary of KLM?

I cannot see Air France operate from LBA, however I wouldn't be surprised if LBA expansion is part of the bmi regional plan.. It all appears to be top secret at the moment though as even the staff dont seem to know whats going on.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
