It is a case of wait and see but if EZY and TOM add another based aircraft and possibly BMI as well then even with the new stands there may not be any room for Jet2 to base at BRS and they may have to operate out of CWL if they want to move into the area so fingers crossed for a full BRS!:)

Off the top of my head i counted I counted 30 based/overnighted aircraft potentially for Summer 18 without any new aircraft from EZY TOM BMI or FR and 34 stands with the new ones? I may be wrong though.

As things stand there would be 14 easyJet (possibly 15 next year), 4 Ryanair, 3 Thomson, 3 Thomas Cook, 5/6? bmi regional and the KLM night stopper. That's 29-31 overnighters. The Eastern Airways E145 Airbus Corporate Shuttle machines are parked on the southside with the biz jets and other general aviation so that can be discounted in terms of the parking on the main (northside) aprons.

I'm not sure that it's as straightforward as counting the number of stands as not all will take all types of aircraft from what I've been told.

A phase of the BRS master plan not yet executed or even given a date for commencement is the replacement of the admin building (old terminal) with new aircraft stands.

I'm not sure how credible is the rumour about Durham Tees Valley Airport and Jet2. CWL was certainly mentioned in the same breath as Jet2 last year, but again I don't know the provenance so it's impossible to calculate whether it had any real legs at that time. Jet2 would be an excellent acquisition for any airport.

Welcome John. Thank you for your first post. We look forward to many more.

Thanks Jerry and TheLocalYokel how welcoming.

Not sure Jerry, just heard from a colleague to expect B737 line maintenance at Cardiff next Summer.

I'd guess it'd be Cardiff Aviation at St Athan. BAMC would be a surprise for a narrow body! And welcome!

What exactly is line maintenance ?

Is it maintenance at a facility like that, or maintenance on stand ?

According to an article i just googled it's this.
Line Maintenance generally refers to minor, unscheduled or scheduled maintenance carried out on aircraft that includes:

  1. Any unscheduled maintenance resulting from unforeseen events
  2. Scheduled checks that contain servicing and/or inspections that do not require specialized training, equipment, or facilities. In service; and that is preparing for its first flight in service
  3. Maintenance performed on aircraft after a period of being out of service (such as aircraft in storage)
  4. Maintenance on en route aircraft that are stopped before their next flight including Servicing or repair between successive flights
  5. Preparing and readying an aircraft for flight during a period of service
  6. Maintenance activities being performed to ensure that the aircraft is airworthy and fit for flight.

Sounds like something they would only do if they had based aircraft at CWL.

Thanks for that Jerry, a pretty large definition of otherwise a simple term but it definitely sounds interesting. Care to elaborate on this matter John ?

Welcome John.

This was something mentioned a few months back, or possibly on BRS thread? I forget.
Either way. line maintenance is basic maintenance. As already said likely for a based aircraft. Heavy maintenance is more Cardiff Aviation. It sounds like an outsourced engineering firm/airline is looking to have an engineering base at CWL (Or St Athan, although to me seems uneccessary)
So let the speculation begin. 737 operators - Jet2, Monarch (soon) or Norwegian.
TOM have their own engineers and doubt they will outsource.
Place your bets...

Jet2, Monarch (soon) or Norwegian.
Jet2 have thier Leeds and Manchester facilities so i can't see it being them. Monarch have their BHX facility. I can't see either setting up new facilities.
Norwegian as far as i know doesn't have a maintenance base in the UK so could be possible contenders especially as CWL is in an aviation enterprise zone and they have used BAMC for their 787s.

Yeah mate you are right that's what line maintenance is exactly.

Line maintenance requests are mostly telling of some sort of base or W whichever way you look at it. Not sure on the airline sorry guys.

Jerry it would be for a based aircraft to complete basic checks, like nightly maintenance or unscheduled maintenance. Similar to the local TOM engineers. It's nothing huge maintenance wise, but if true, means at least 1 based aircraft.

So you don't know which airline it is? Ok posts like this would be better off in the routes development thread if the airline is unknown. Maybe the the mods could move the posts there? And there is an airline we are forgetting Ryanair.

I am sorry if i did post in the wrong place didn't know where to put it you see. Yes more than likely indicates a base of sorts i'd imagine.

It's ok! Great piece of info though! There was a rumour going around a while ago that Ryanair were looking at a base in 2018 but with the way Jet2 are expanding they could be a possibilty! I think it's safe to say it won't be for TOM!

Thanks for the information John.

I suppose this could involve a multitude of different airlines as possibilities, MON are highly unlikely given their own MX capabilities and their retrenchment. Same goes for LS bar the retrenchment part, quite the opposite.

FR is a contender i guess, although i'm sure they had their own in-house line MX in the UK and Ireland.

Norwegian could be a contender also, but there are also other operators which i wouldn't rule out. Could even be an airline operating on behalf of TOM/TCX etc ?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
