Anyone at ATC/LBA know how many helicopters are schedule to be in the area filming the tour either live TV or news. Suspect there will be a few, but just wondered how this may affect operations at LBA especially as Tour starts in Leeds which is on the 32 approach and when it passes through otley a few hours later!

There are will be some flight Restrictions in force around LBA's airspace.

Stage 1 - Saturday 5th July 2014

Stage 2 - Sunday 6th July 2014.

Meanwhile the airport has a dedicated page http://www.leedsbradfordairport.co.uk/tourdefrance giving out information regarding travelling to the airport over the weekend off the Le Tour Yorkshire The Grand Départ 2014 weekend.

Here's the information guide which is been given out by the airport to all airlines, companies, employees and passengers that will be using LBA. it covers details of roads routes to be used and airport bus service disruptions.

Not sure how many helicopters but they really don't cause that much of a problem. Mainly because they are so low.

Unless they flew right through the immediate climb out or very short final they can usually just be given traffic information and left to route as they need to:)

Does anyone think there'll be much extra traffic at LBA for the Grand Depart? Cargo flights bringing the bikes/equipment? Charter flights for the supporters? Private flights bringing in the riders and officials?

Well its just been confirmed that the Royal Air Force's Aerobatic team The Red Arrow's will be doing a flypast over Harewood House (North Leeds) on Saturday July 5th as part of the Tour de France Grand Départ 2014 Stage 1

Meanwhile the Royal Air Force's Battle of Battle of Britain memorial flight including a Spitfire, Hurricane, Dakota and Lancaster will do a flypast of Harewood house on Sunday July 6th as part of the Tour de France Grand Départ 2014 stage 2.

When the TDF was first announced as coming to Yorkshire I though at least we will have some extra apron space built by then. I was wrong. If we lose 1 flight to rival competing airports because there is not enough space at LBIA it will show exactly what a second class joke this region has become.

Interestingly, I flew Easyjet to Geneva last week. The front cover of the in flight magazine at the moment is about Yorkshire and that is the main piece inside the mag. Once I had read through the article, it stated that Easyjet fly from numerous destinations to Manchester....

In more general terms, I think the tour de france is becoming a real headache. It is going to be so disruptive to our region and I would be surprised if the amount of money and effort going into the planning and execution of the race is worth the projected amount of revenue it will bring to the region. Quite honestly LUFC PETE, there is little point sending extra flights to LBA due to the extensive local restrictions, which will be a nightmare - particularly for me, whose place of work is right in the middle of the restrictions.

It will cause disruption, but not unlike any other large event. It's being held on a weekend so disruption to average daily life will be minimal. Glasgow will also have it's fair share of road restrictions for around two weeks when it holds the Commonwealth Games this summer. As did London when it held the Olympics. What's important is the events legacy. Visit Yorkshire have done a fantastic job at advertising the region and I thoroughly expect to see huge increases in inbound tourism over the next few years because of it. The Global coverage of the Le Tour and the Grand Depart is immense and it's a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase Yorkshire to many people who have never been, or even heard of it. For LBA it's over to them to capture that inbound tourism so it doesn't leak over the hill.

Here's a video from Yorkshire "When are you coming?"

People will watch TV coverage of the race too, and see the countryside around Yorkshire, realising what there is to see. I agree - it will put Yorkshire on the map and even though people might not come this year, they will put us on their list of places to visit in the future. Overall, there is potential for a big gain and even the airport's view is that the disruption is a small price to pay.

White Heather the t v audience is huge. Average t v audience for each stage averages 175million, nearly 3 times the total population of the British isles. It is estimated 3.5 billion people will watch over the 3 weeks of the event. (this is previous years average figures)
every minute of every stage which last up to 5 hours are shown with segments showing the local attractions that the race passes. Our area is going to get the type of publicity that spending millions cannot achieve.
There are bound to be a lot of helicopter flights in the week before the tour as they take all the shots of local attractions to be fed into the real time action.
I watch as many minutes of live transmission as I can, the overhead shots of previous years stages are breathtaking and I am sure this years route in the u.k. will give people overseas food for thought.
It will do nothing for this years tourist figures but should help for future years.
I can remember living in Spain in 1984 when York Minster caught fire (my home city), the number of local spaniards who were inspired by the airial shots of the Minster and the bar walls and organised to visit really surprised me.

I think they should grab some Bond helicopters and run shuttles from LBA to Harrogate showground and Otley. Easily the best way of getting punters around that weekend.

This article has appeared in today's Yorkshire evening post regarding road closures in and around Leeds area for the stage 1 of the Le Tour. Well worth a read even though its produced by local a newspaper we don't like to mention on here often!

Well it sounds like LBA are expecting some extra charter flights in from France next week whilst Jet2 and KLM are increasing services to Leeds in time for Le Tour.

Leeds Bradford Airport to host its first ever runway cycle race to mark Grand Depart

Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme waves the French flag as he arrives for the 2014 Tour de France Yorkshire route announcement at Leeds and Bradford Airport last year.

The runway at Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is being turned into a cycle track for the first time in its 83-year history to celebrate the Tour de France’s arrival.

A one-off Tour de Runway will see up to 50 staff from the airport, its business partners and airlines ride a 3km loop as the complex goes yellow in the build up to the Grand Depart from Yorkshire on July 5 and 6.

The inaugural event has been timed to coincide with the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Wear it Yellow Day on Thursday July 3, where individuals are encouraged to don yellow and donate £1 each to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Aside from the take off of the Tour de Runway, the airport also has plans to set up yellow floral displays with help from RHS Garden Harlow Carr, while staff and runway riders will wear yellow as we bid to turn Yorkshire yellow.

[hi-lighty:1zh7wugp]LBA has already stated that extra flights are to be scheduled from France, while carriers including KLM and Jet2.com are increasing services to Leeds in time for Le Tour.[/hi-lighty:1zh7wugp]

Tony Hallwood, LBA’s aviation development and marketing director, said: “Leeds Bradford Airport is looking forward to celebrating the Grand Depart of the Tour de France with our own Tour de Runway on Thursday July 3.

“Enthusiastic airport staff across nine airlines and business partners will be cycling a flat 3km course and turning LBA yellow for the day in celebration of the world largest sporting event coming to Yorkshire.”

The colourful push comes as we urge people to get involved in our vibrant #yellowyorkshire campaign, which asks readers to send in their yellow pictures and stories to embrace Le Tour’s landmark visit culminating in our Wear it Yellow Day celebration. The world’s greatest cyclists will ride from Leeds to Harrogate for stage one of the Tour de France on July 5, before rolling from York to Sheffield the following day.

The likes of Thornhill Community Academy, Primley Park Dentistry, KPMG Leeds, Revolution Viewing, Leeds St James’ Hospital, Barclays Huddersfield and Mousie Browns Hair & Beauty are among those to pledge to Wear it Yellow so far.

To sign up to take part in Wear it Yellow Day email [email protected] or to send in your yellow stories email [email protected].

I can't believe that nobody knows what extra flights are planned for the the Tour de France. Talk about knowledge is power.

I hear they will be a few interesting visiting regional airlines operating inbound charters from French destinations next week. I have also been told that LBA are expecting quite a few biz jets movements along with the Tour de France organisers own VIP and TV crews aircraft.

Its going to be an Interesting week ahead here at LBA, for sure!

Look on flight radar 24, disable all filters and zoom over the TDF currently over haworth, oxenhope. 2 planes circling at 10-12,000 ft for the distribution of the TV pics :)

Thanks, I'd noticed them yesterday when I was in Leeds I could see aircraft circling at a relatively high altitude.

Well it's all over for the Yorkshire stages of the Tour de France. I don't know how other people feel about it but for me it's been a truly memorable occasion. The way the public have got behind the event has been phenomenal with the party like atmosphere.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
