With February 2023 passenger figures, the month saw the first time BHX had a 12 month total over 10 million since before the pandemic. Hopefully by the end of the year we can get that above 11 million.

My thoughts as far as BHX is concerned is that we ideally need more rotations on places such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Brussels and Copenhagen to pre Pandemic levels, and replacement of routes to Gibraltar, Stockholm, Valencia etc. Plus USA destinations.
Easier said than done though in the current climate for airlines.

Given the loss of the airline that served most of our domestic routes pre-covid, BHX's domestic network isn't doing too badly, currently sitting at 73% of pre-covid levels. EDI/GLA are both around 62%, but of more concern are Aberdeen and Inverness, both at just 38%.
On the Continent, personally of most concern is Germany, which has only recovered 45% of pre-covid levels. Munich is doing well at 93%, with Frankfurt just over 50% but Dusseldorf only 33%. Additionally we've lost connections to Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover and Stuttgart. Berlin I could see Eurowings or easyJet picking up, but for now the others are probably a lost cause.
On the plus side, passenger levels to Turkey are up 67%, Poland up 12% and Spain up 3%.
Considering we've only got back ~70% of our capacity on Dubai, passenger levels are back to 77% so higher load factors than before. BHX's 2019 passenger levels to Dubai could actually be carried with a daily A380 & B777 (though August and September would need more A380's), so potentially by the end of this year if not the end of the 2023/24 Financial year we could see Dubai back to pre-covid levels.
Given the pandemic recovery across Europe has largely been led by low cost carriers, and given BHX's lack of a sizeable LCC base compared to other UK airports, it's hardly surprising we're lagging slightly behind some of our competitors.

My take on the CAA data can be found below, together with a comparison - for all airports - of March 2019-2023 at the following https://forums4airports.com/threads/5945/page-4#post-262488

In Table 9, they show passenger numbers as 779,097, but when adding the totals from Table 12.1 (international) and Table 12.3 (Domestic) passengers the total is 743,995 - used in my figures!!

Jenny, these are just Birmingham passenger figures for April, we don't have any flights to Gatwick hence the zero! The 2022 figures of 311 would have refered to Gatwick diverted flights that landed at BHX
My apologies, I misinterpreted the figures as actual figures for each airport, thinking Gatwick had been closed. Carelessness on my own part.

Wow, BRS managed to handle ~47,000 passengers less than BHX in April!
Normally that figure is well over 100,000 per month?!

Yes indeed BRS certainly was closing the gap on BHX in April, goes to show the inpact on a airport an Easyjet base can have on passenger numbers! I would expect BHX to pull away from BRS over the summer months as we have more TUI charter flight than them, and with the likes of the EK 380, SV, and QR starting soon, we should be well clear of them

Hopefully with the start of Qatar and Saudi next month plus Emirates bringing back the A380 BHX should see a boost in figures plus EasyJet opening a three aircraft base next spring (routes to announced shortly) along with Ryanair who added a sixth based 737 in the last few days making positive noises we can move forward and live up to the city motto.
The airport has taken big hits over the last few years with the demise of Monarch who had a twelve aircraft base,TCX and Flybe Mk1.
I know all airports have suffered but BHX proportionately seemed to get the biggest hits.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
