Did BHX make the magic 13m in 2017 that is the question ?

We can afford to be 5% in December and still make the 13m.

November Passenger Growth (...FINALLY)

January – 775,176 (+16.3%)
February – 807,733 (+11.5%)
March - 904,814 (+8.9%)
April - 1,063,571 (+21.7%)
May - 1,202,880 (+19.4%)
June - 1,302,204 (+16.3%)
July - 1,436,756 (+17.5%)
August - 1,496,213 (+16.2%) (Highest Monthly Figure on Record!)
September - 1,362,559 (+12.6%)
October – 1,076,359 (+0.1%)
November – 767,910 (-1.5%) – The first negative month of growth since?
December -

Year to date total = 12,196,178
Year to date growth = +12.7%

Rolling 12 month total = 13,039,099 (+13.6%) – So whilst we know the 13m mark was passed, this is still a big moment for BHX.

So, if anyone wanted to know what happens to passengers figures once an airports 2rd largest customer goes out of business, the above shows this clearly.

Of interest however, even though we are in January and still don’t know what the December figures are, this will still be a record breaking year, and BHXs biggest year in history, question is, will we keep above the 13m mark?

We therefore need to make sure we don’t lose that 39,099 pax surplus we currently have. We therefore need December to be at least 808,431 or a drop of no more than -4.6%

…let’s wait and see!

Hi there nwoody2001 and all, I know those figures that you have shown are not brilliant in one respect to what happened to Monarch, but in another aspect they are good figures if it's only a small minus rather than a plus, all the credit at present needs to be given to Jet2 for soaking up so much excess when Monarch went under, and lets hope that Primera Air also start to deliver the goods as well next and so on... AndyC

Hello andrew I agree with you about Jet2 they have done a brill job and I wouldn't denigrate them at all but another part of me says that they saw a weakened competitor and seized the moment at Birmingham and also Stansted to drive the final nail in the coffin so to speak to see off Monarch to build a substantive presence at both.

I know that's how business works so do not blame them at all dog eats dog as they say, you only have to look at how B.A. have either driven out or taken over airlines over the years to remove a competitor or obtain slots from Laker, British Caladonian, Dan Air to British Midland and so on, they also famously tried to kill off Virgin but got found out and had a hefty compensation biil to pay.

Suppose that just how it is.

So I was going through the CAA stats for domestic passengers at BHX and found something which perplexed me. Comparing numbers for Belfast City (only Flybe I believe) and Belfast International (only easyJet I believe), the graph below shows the number of passengers using each service. For some reason, it looks like not only is Flybe more popular over the summer than easyJet, but that passengers were switching from easyJet to Flybe (total passengers to both airports remained roughly the same from March to November). Anyone got any idea why that trend?

Coathanger, during the peak summer months (June-Sept) Easyjet reduced the number of flights to Belfast, from 3 flights daily, down to 2 or even just 1 flight a day, whilst Flybe operated 7 flights a day, so far more seats to Belfast City in that period, hence the drop in passengers for Belfast Int.
That could make for a very interesting graphical representation of pax v seats availabe per month (yes, I know this ventures into the realm of 'there are lies, damned lies and statistics!'), but if the info is available, it would make for an enlightening read.
There are many other figures entering my head, involving 'means and medians' for the above figures, but I don't want to go there. Statistics can be twisted to emphasise anything.

Interesting numbers.

As Matt has said Easyjet have previously cut BHX back over the peak summer weeks to do more sun routes from Belfast. As it stands this year we are to see 16 weekly flights during August (subject to change) so it would be interesting to compare this time next year.

The airport saw 12,983,436 last year so just short of 13 million but still 1.3 million more than 2016, an increase of 11.5%.

Birmingham Airport has recorded its busiest year in its 78 year history seeing almost 13 million passengers pass through its terminal in 2017.

In total, 12,983,436 passengers travelled through the airport over the course of the calendar year, over 1.3 million more people than in 2016 giving a healthy increase of 11.5% year on year.

The busiest month fell in August when almost 1.5 million passengers were recorded in a single month, giving a significant 16.2% increase when compared to the same month the year before.

Over the course of the year, there were seven months in which over a million passengers were recorded and over thirty months of consecutive record breaking growth.

David Winstanley, Chief Operating Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “Last year we celebrated the busiest 12 months in our history.

“During 2017, we saw the launch of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays and the return of British Airways and bmi regional. News of new transatlantic routes to Boston, New York and Toronto starting from May 2018 with Primera Air were announced as well as new routes, to Goa and Phuket with TUI and Marsa Alam with Thomas Cook to name a few. Emirates maintained a strong presence in the region and introduced its second daily A380 aircraft onto its established lunchtime service between Birmingham and Dubai.

“The year was indeed one of celebration but also commiseration as we sadly saw the demise of a long-established airline, Monarch. This airline carried an average of 5,000 passengers per day from Birmingham but we have seen some existing carriers and new carriers pick up almost all of this capacity already to reduce the impact on our passengers.”

Looking forward to 2018, the airport is committed to improving the customer experience and a multi-million pound development project is underway, for completion before the summer season. This includes a redevelopment of the security processing area, new flooring, lighting and shopping facilities. A new 178 guestroom Hilton Garden Inn hotel is also being built and will open in mid-summer.

December’s passenger figures saw over 788,000 passengers travel through the terminal in the final month of 2017.

Significant growth was recorded on some schedule routes including Salzburg (+275.9%), Turin (+139%), Hamburg (+82.6%), Krakow (+81.5%) and Prague (+81.1%). Charter routes which saw significant growth included Hurghada (+199.8%), Fuerteventura (+89.4%), Tenerife (+55%) and Gran Canaria (+38.8%).

Can't complain given everything.

Where were we two years ago? 10.2 million: so we have added nearly 3 million passengers! And where will be this time next year?

Congrats to all the airports for a successful year. EDI had a good month crediting significant international traffic growth up 8.6%.

More importantly who was nearest in the 2017 predictions competition?

Well done to BHX, a great effort by everybody and also us on FFA, I know we all travel from BHX unless the option is not available.

Id say 2018 will drop to around 12.5 million but again this will be good considering what has happened over the last few months, it will take some time for things to get back to normal and we see growth again.

:)

I hope there is more to look forward to in 2018 than just infrastructure developments much as they are needed.
Just a thought but has the airport have made a decision to do this before resuming to aggressively chase new business? Maintain current levels for a year or two and then kick on. They did receive some stick last year and it might not be a bad policy. At the moment the facilities are not a 15/16m airport.

Just an odd question, did the Monarch repatriation count towards the statistics at all, I'd assume it would.

I think Jet2 did a great job soaking up the Monarch loss wouldn't be surprised for even more expansion from them, perhaps we might get Easyjet starting a base too this year? Who knows!

Personally I'd love a direct flight out towards Singapore or China (I know a long shot) even if it started at a couple of times a week.

Very good growth regardless for 2017, 2018 seems very promising too! (y)

That's an interesting point, nbdm! I know that for diversions, the CAA count passengers to/from the airport that they booked to fly, not the diversion airport. I can only assume that the same would apply for repatriation flights.

Re: Easyjet

From my understanding they would want to serve cities such as AMS/CDG which are already well served by legacy airlines and BHX have told them NO, so these things are a sticking point.

But what do I know.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
