Use this prefix for new threads for Birmingham Airport
As many of you may be aware I have been producing statistic on the Manchester airport thread for many years and thought that i would now augment those already kindly supplied by Ian Farquharson.

Passengers - 224,877 (September 2020) - Down 82.07% based on CAA figures
Movements - 2,784 (September 2020) - Down 71% based on CAA figures

Out of interest the total passengers for September 2000 were 828,382

Routes with highest passenger numbers:

Note - Skiathos is actually a positive increase and should have been shown as a green percentage change

Highest percentage change:

Unfortunately in these sad times this means that the negatives are the biggest achievers

20-year comparison - based on the busiest routes in 2000:

With today's Jet2 announcement at BRS, I can really see them overtaking BHX in passenger numbers over the next 5 years if BHX doesn't pull something big out of the bag soon ??

Depends what happens at Bristol. They've currently got a passenger cap of 10mppa. Application to increase it to 12mppa was rejected by local authority with Bristol in the process of appealing.

I do think without a new based airline (easyJet or Wizz), BHX will struggle to get much above 15mppa though.

BRS won't overtake BHX. As Coathanger points out BRS is capped at 10 mppa and even if it wins its appeal it will still be capped at 12 mppa. Furthermore, the site is a small one in the middle of a Green Belt and incapable of much further development. The airport is talking about 20 mppa by the 2040s but a lot must happen in all sorts of spheres for that to come about.

Had Bristol Airport been located at the now closed Filton aerodrome with its longer runway and excellent motorway and rail connectivity FZO (I wonder if the code would have been altered to BRS) might have given BHX a run for its money, but it has to be remembered that BHX serves a substantially larger catchment than BRS.

Given all its disadvantages - small and high often mist-laden site, short runway, poor surface connectivity, awkward weather, Green Belt - BRS has done remarkably well to get where it did pre-pandemic, but there are limitations.

I do think without a new based airline (easyJet or Wizz), BHX will struggle to get much above 15mppa though.

The only airline I reckon could come even close to filling the gaps left by Flybe is easyjet but I just don't see it happening unfortunately.

A Wizz base would be most welcome, especially if BHX could persuade them to come in on missing destinations such as Milan and Lisbon. My concern is whether Wizz could/would bring back routes such as Bordeaux, Toulouse and Isle of Man (Loganair had winter slots or IOM but obviously haven't used them), which are all now missing? I also have my doubts that they'd bring back some of the now missing German routes, even their huge base at Luton has nothing to Germany.

It's going to be interesting to see where BHX position themselves when we eventually emerge from this mess.

Hi there all, I think that due to the current situation world wide, nearly all airports around the world will suffer, some more than others. Let's hope the if the post that I have read from another subject on this forum stated that, once the current situation starts to resolve it self, let's hope that management and investors at Birmingham Airport Don't cause massive issues by increasing any charges to current airlines that fly from Birmingham Airport, otherwise, these committed airlines could decide to leave the airport and leave it in a mess. So I appeal to all airport management and investors, drop any ideas of increasing charges...AndyC

There will need to be a balance. If they'd don't recoup their costs, there won't be any airport for the airlines to fly out of.

I have not trespassed upon the LHR thread so forgive me please if the answer to my query is obvious.

Have the management at the nation's biggest been given a leg up during the crisis by our marvellous government? If yes, why ? Are the regionals not worthy of support?

I'm experimenting a little here, so please accept my apologies if things are not lining up correctly at the moment. A breakdown of passenger types for the Financial Year is not easy to quickly garner and so I have just given the total in that section. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated via PM (to save unnecessary space).

Hopefully by the time I produce November's data I'll be slightly more expert - and apologies to IanF if I'm treading in your area

Hi there Ian, I think we need to know, what passenger figures were from between Jan this year and as soon as lockdown happened, then from when uk airports were allowed to reopen again ,upon until present, this then gives us roughly how many passengers Birmingham Airport has handled in between lockdown .AndyC

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
