(Quoting an article and comments by Andrew Cowan):

Positive dialogue continues with a number of other airlines about filling the remaining slots vacated by Monarch.

I assume "a number of other airlines" includes easyjet, as they were correctly and noticeably absent from the preceding paragraphs which mention specific airlines in relation to the lost MON capacity which are increasing capacity this summer.

Call me cynical, but I tend to take PR statements such as "positive dialogue continues with a number of other airlines" with a pinch of salt. The form of words may vary to give the impression of imminent progress, but all an airport business is really saying is that they employ a route development team who continue to do the job they are paid to do 24/7/365. Dependent on their own marketing skills, the strength of the proposition they have to sell, and economic conditions, they will either enjoy some success (or not). But they will pursue dialogue with airlines over many years regardless. Some such long-term relationships will eventually bear fruit (eg. Cathay Pacific at Manchester); others will not, no matter how persuasive the pitch may seem (eg. Wizz Air - stubbornly still not at Manchester). Ultimately, the airlines hold the whip-hand. They are not short of suitors; they can pick and choose.

And aside from a deal on fees and some marketing help, there is surprisingly little an airport can offer in the context of a new service. For example, if a Chinese carrier were to consider a new service to Shanghai from either MAN, BHX, GLA or EDI, what can an airport really do to swing the outcome their way? Even if one of them offered zero charges plus marketing support, what percentage of overall operating costs does the use of one (of two) airports represent (after fuel, maintenance, staff wages, depreciation, insurance, nav charges, lease / purchase fees etc., etc.?). The answer is not very much at all. And all airports bidding for new business will make attractive offers of their own anyway. And they still have to pay their own way as a business. They can't offer their services for free (unless willing to do likewise for all their other airline customers). And how would that work out?

So the primary skill required is the ability to effectively market the catchment / hinterland of your subject airport. How large is the potential market? How wealthy is it? How great is the propensity to travel? Are there synergies or potential synergies between industries at either end of the route? How strong is access to connecting flights? Are the destinations at either end of the route likely to attract tourism flows in high volume? Answering questions such as these positively will secure the best chance of a successful outcome.

You can employ the finest route negotiator in the world, authorised to offer fee-free access and marketing incentives, to pitch services to a remote mid-Atlantic island to Chinese long-haul carriers. That executive will still fail. But effectively communicate the advantages of an airport which offers a strong economic proposition - even one charging reasonable fees (because it too is a business with financial commitments) - and a mutually acceptable deal can be agreed. An airline won't turn down a fee-free regime or a discount - they will likely negotiate for incentives - but the airport's market proposition will be the ultimate clincher.

My post has drifted rather from MAG's post-Monarch statement above. But still, the point stands that a major airport is always in a position to state that it 'continues in dialogue' with potential airline customers. I'd expect no less at any time, but it doesn't imply any guarantee of a successful outcome in the near term. We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed for that.

Thanks Ian. MAN appears on P34 of the 41 page report.
I think we may be struggling to hold on to 19th spot in 2018 if Oslo and Stockholm continue their recent growth. Still, good to be with the 'big boys'.

The 2017 CAA annual statistics are out.

Some general highlights..

There are some 266 airports showing as having at least 1 passenger routing to/from MAN
There are some 222 airports showing as having at least 1 passenger routing to/from MAN on a scheduled service
There are some 111 airports showing as having no charter passengers but at least 1 scheduled service passenger
There are some 47 airports showing as having no scheduled service passengers but at least 1 charter passenger
There are some 31 airports showing with no passengers recorded compared to 2016

There is just 1 route showing with 1 million passengers... Amsterdam with 1,041,792 passengers, of which 1,041,430 were on scheduled services and 362 were on charter services.
Potentially we could see 3 routes with 1 million passengers this year as the following 2 routes are nearly there:
Dubai with 990,269 passengers (all of which were on scheduled services)
Dublin with 974,979 passengers of which 973,472 were on scheduled service and 1,507 on charter services

The route with fewest passengers was Bogota with the princely total of 1 on a scheduled service!
The route with the biggest increase in percentage terms was San Francisco which was up 23,600%
Excluding the 0 passenger routes, the route with the largest fall in percentage terms was Genoa which was down 98.27%

The route with the biggest increase in passenger numbers was Hamburg which gained 130,651 passengers.
The route with the largest fall in passenger numbers was Rygge which was down 53,785 passengers to 0. Of those recording a passenger number in 2017, the biggest loser was Istanbul which was down 40,748 passengers

In terms of scheduled services, it was Hamburg for the biggest increase and Rygge/Istanbul for the biggest losers.
In terms of charter services, the biggest increase was to Las Palmas and the biggest losers were Cancun and Hurghada (conversion of some flights to scheduled service as overall numbers increased) with Palma being the candidate for one not primarily affected by conversion of services.

Both Belfast City and Inverness were missing from my January review.

With the CAA having now updated their website the figures are:

Belfast City - 20,308
Inverness - 3,686

Total - 23,994

Annual total - 1,664,470 on the CAA figures compared with 1,664,623 on the airports on site. Where do these differences find from??

February statistics are out from the CAA. My normal more detailed report will follow later.

As usual in the first run there is no data for Belfast City and Inverness.

Manchester Airport reveals most popular long-haul routes across its catchment area last year

  • Top overall long-haul destinations include Dubai, Orlando and New York
  • Routes Mancunians prefer include Cancun, Hong Kong and Las Vegas
  • Destinations Scousers flock to include Boston, Toronto and Vancouver
  • Residents of Yorkshire jet off to Islamabad, Beijing and Singapore
  • Scots opt for trips to Houston, Barbados and Montego Bay
  • The Welsh fly the most to San Francisco and LA
  • Infographics highlight the popular routes across Manchester Airport’s extensive catchment area
  • Top ten destinations by area included below
As the financial year comes to a close, the UK’s third biggest airport, Manchester, unveils the most popular long-haul routes chosen by its 27.8m passengers across its extensive catchment area.

With 22m people in its catchment that spans north to Scotland, south to the Midlands, west to Merseyside and Wales, and east To Yorkshire, the data released today highlights how the global gateway connects millions of people to a wealth of economic hubs and tourist destinations.

Orlando marks the most popular destination by far across the entire catchment area with more than 500,000 passengers each year, but each county has an interesting set of routes its inhabitants jet off to each year. As well as offering passengers’ holidays, a lot of the routes are actually key for business and trade opportunities. For example, Houston is a top destination in Scotland due to the oil and gas links, whereas San Francisco offers a vital connection to the vibrant tech cities of Leeds and Manchester.

The top ten overall popular long-haul destinations from Manchester Airport are:

  • Orlando – Thomas Cook Airlines, TUI and Virgin Atlantic
  • New York – Thomas Cook Airlines, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and Jet2
  • Dubai – Emirates
  • Cancun – Thomas Cook Airlines and TUI
  • Islamabad - PIA
  • Las Vegas – Thomas Cook Airlines and Virgin Atlantic
  • Barbados – Thomas Cook Airlines, TUI and Virgin Atlantic
  • Toronto – Air Transat and Air Canada Rouge
  • Hong Kong – Cathay Pacific
  • Abu Dhabi – Etihad Airways
In recent years Manchester Airport has added numerous long-haul routes to its network that in the UK, can only be found at the Northern hub, or in London. These include Beijing, San Francisco, Boston, Muscat, Houston and Hong Kong to name a few.

It is for this reason why the airport pulls in so many passengers from a vast area as people want to fly direct rather than hubbing through other airports or travelling down to the congested capital.

Many of these routes are providing vital connectivity to international markets for key sectors like tech, life sciences, energy and advanced manufacturing.

Manchester Airport’s long-haul routes are also bringing hundreds of thousands of international tourists to the North and beyond each year, providing a boost to hotels, restaurants and visitor attractions.

Julian Carr, Aviation Director for Manchester Airport, said: “It is interesting to see the mix of destinations and how they differ from county to county across our vast catchment area.

“It is clear Manchester Airport is providing vital access to people across the North and beyond to key sites of economic opportunity, holidays and the chance to visit loved ones abroad.

“Whether people want to fly from Liverpool to Las Vegas, Cheshire to Cancun, Newcastle to New York or Llandudno to LA, we will continue to strive to offer and secure all our 27.8m passengers a broad range of destinations.”

As well as adding numerous destinations in recent years, 2018 will be the airport’s busiest ever year and will see the launch of direct flights to Seattle, with Thomas Cook Airlines, again making Manchester the only non-London airport in the UK with this route. It will also see the biggest ever investment in the airport as the £1bn transformation continues at pace.

Manchester Airport

The chart accompanying the article above is very interesting as a standalone graphic. But the manner in which it has been paired up with the narrative issued by the PR people without further explanation makes it highly misleading. I can understand the interest in long-haul catchments. But what that chart is actually showing is the distribution of bookings for all routes to / from MAN. If you add up those regional totals you get a figure which is close to the airport's entire annual throughput. There is of course a small shortfall representing outliers who originate in regions not featured on the chart. So, for example, those 1.4M pax shown for the West Midlands region are actually spread across MAN's entire network, not long-haul routes in isolation. It would have been helpful had the authors of the article spelled-out that distinction more clearly.

The article is a bit misleading. I also find it interesting that they say the Welsh fly to the US West Coast the most.
They mention people using MAN because of more direct destinations yet my sister flies to San Francisco next week and she's going MAN-PHL-SFO and her return fplight is SFO-LHR-MAN even though MAN has direct flights to San Francisco.

If I've counted correctly, the figures for the regions add up to 25.75m, about 2m short of the 2017 pax statistics but much closer to 2016. However, a couple of points occur.

How have they dealt with pax that are not UK originating?
80/20 ratio used to be quoted but even if the percentage of pax originating abroad is say 15%, it still represents 4m in total. If, for example, an Indian visits relatives in Yorkshire, or an Australian friends in Wales, do they count the return as the origin?

Secondly, there are transfer pax. I don't know how relevant the figure would be in thee wider context but it's been mentioned several times that a decent number of folk fly from Ireland to MAN to catch the VS service to Orlando. Other transfers have been said to include Germans coming to MAN to catch TCX flights, and there are some Scandinavians transferring at MAN apparently.

Nevertheless, as EGCC_MAN comments, the initial map showing the demographics of MAN's passenger profile by UK region is certainly of interest, assuming it's reasonably accurate.
That number travelling over the Pennines from Yorkshire is of particular significance within MAN's total and I can appreciate is a sore point among some contributors from that county on the various forums.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
