Manchester Statistics - December 2019

Introduction

One new destination was included in December. This was Bacau (Romania) with 214 passengers

Million passenger routes (Rolling annual figures)
Amsterdam - 1,064,910 passengers
Dublin – 1,000,584 passengers
Dubai – 1,002,656

The following domestic statistics are missing from the CAA report for December.
No data is missing

Moving monthly and annual figures - based on MAG statistics
Manchester Airport's December statistics

Top 25 destinations - by passenger numbers

Top destinations with highest percentage increase.

Figures for the European and long-haul destinations that I consider to be the main points for our connecting traffic.

Istanbul figures are affected by the start of the Pegasus service to Sabiha Gokcen airport. The combined figures for both airports gives an increase of 56.5% over the same month last year.

Comparison of top 31 destinations - November 2009 versus November 2019

Major changes to Domestic traffic

Load factors analysis on certain routes

Calculations are based of FlightRadar24 for days of flight operation, Planespotter.net for Seat Plans and CAA data for monthly figures.
Please remember when looking at these figures that they only reflect passengers per flight. One needs to take into account that Addis Ababa and Houston/Singapore are destinations which are part of a route that serves not just Manchester but another city enroute.

I've done a more detailed analysis of the long-haul scheduled routes to show the changes over the last 15 years.

Statistics are now available courtesy of the airport's press office.

The reduction in domestic passengers, on top of the continuing Thomas Cook 'effect' have left a negative figure but, under the circumstances, it could have been far worse.

February statistics have now been made available by the airport's press office.

Whilst at a quick glance the reduction of 1.04pc in terminal passengers does not look too bad one has to remember that this year there was an additional day and therefore the loss is nearer to -3pc.

As a straight percentage, an extra day onto 28 days is 3.57%. However, the actual impact can vary, depending on which day of the week the extra day falls and the number of passengers handled.

Time for my usual monthly analysis of the previous month's passenger data.

Istanbul figures are affected by the start of the Pegasus service to Sabiha Gokcen airport. The combined figures for both airports gives an increase of 59.12% over the same month last year.

An analysis of domestic traffic was not provided by the CAA back in 2000 and so this report purely covers international flights.

Major changes to Domestic traffic

Finally my take on Load-Factors for certain long-haul scheduled routes

Data is derived from CAA monthly figures and flight operated data from FR24

I had a chat yesterday with one of my airport contacts who is currently working from home, but will be on furlough from this weekend. The aim of the call was to see whether the statistics that the airport provide on a monthly basis wold be available soon - the answer was no and, in a nutshell, they are unlikely to be provided for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately so many staff have been put on furlough and 'the numbers are not vital.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, data is provided by airports to the CAA for their monthly reports.

Thanks for that Scottie. Entirely understandable in the present circumstances, although at many airports the total passenger numbers for April could probably be counted in no more than a few minutes.

From a statement made today by MAG to the London Stock Exchange

Published figures for March show a downturn of 54.3pc to just 942,900 and a rolling figure of 28,229,942.

My feeling is that this will put us at around 15m passengers, if we’re lucky, for the calendar year taking into account the fact the IT market will not restart until July at the earliest.

Two more files from me to end the day.

The first is the comparison between March 2000 and March 2020. It's interesting to see the effect that Covid-19 has already had on the figures as all, except 2 destinations, are currently at lower levels that 20 years ago - amazing and quite frightening.

The other is my calculation of load-factors for the month. Again I would remind you to remember that Addis Ababa, Houston and Singapore operate as shared destinations and therefore the uptake from Manchester might be much higher than the figures indicate.
