The funeral of Ken Wilkinson was held today in Solihull.

Mr Wilkinson was one of the last remaining Battle of Britain Spitfire pilots. Hundreds turned up to pay their respects and as his remains were carried into the church a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flew overhead three times.

It sounds like a fitting tribute to a genuine hero.

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.

:D

Commonwealth Federation judges picked Birmingham ahead of rival Liverpool, impressed by the range of sporting facilities and infrastructure in the city. The city will now work with Government to firm its proposals ahead of the international contest.

Wonderful news(y)

I hope that the Government back this to the full and I hope we also get the backing of the rest of the country.
I remember the bidding for the 1992 Olympics and seeing only Birmingham European carrying the logo on their planes.
Fast forward to London's Olympic bid and the logo was shown on just about anything, with support from many major companies.
As Birmingham already has most of the infrastructure already in place for this event, a relatively small outlay from the government would reap huge rewards for Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Strangely enough I was involved in the fringes of the Olympic bid for 1992 (I worked for the Company handling the logistics for the bid) and whilst the effort was made by the Council (and ourselves) it never felt right and I think deep down we all knew that the bid would come to naught. Any obstacles that could be placed in our way always seemed to be front and centre whichever way we turned. Whilst the budget was a good size for the bid we always needed to have a little bit more than was available (true enough in most aspects of life I know) but the crowning moment came when the final presentations were made. Barcelona just blew everyone out of the water with their presentation and I think we knew then that however good our efforts were we had no chance in getting awarded the Games. Sure enough word came back that Birmingham had been eliminated from the list and that Barcelona had won. There were more than a few despondent faces around the office that day.

As Kevin has said we need the support from Government now to have a chance to shine with the Commonwealth Games. Birmingham deserves this chance to show the World what we have become and no matter where you live in the Country people should get behind this bid.

We gotta win these games. Unlikely to be an Australian city as the 2018 games are in the Gold Coast. Kuala Lumpur hosted the games in 1998. Adminttedly that will be 24 years ago. Doubt if Canada will bid. Ditto New Zealand. So if the government backs Brum which it will have to, to show Britain has a post brexit positive outlook to the world i expect it to be Brum v Kuala Lumpur. Will they go with a new city albeit one with 90% of the infrastructure in place? Well there will be many countries seeking economic favours with Britain post brexit so maybe.

It will be tremendous when we get it. Not the biggest sporting event - we should try and get the Grand Depart for le Tour - but the games did wonders for Manchester and Glasgow.

Bring the Games to Birmingham. Ring a bell.

Question is will we have an airport with the physical capacity to cope? Getting the games is the prod the airport needs to plan behind the immediate investment and extend the terminals. There is the space.

That video was excellent fun. Love the way the buses seemed to spew the passengers out into the apron. I assume a two week holiday is likewise condensed into one week?

Better not let any airline CEO's see that, they may want all of their flights turn around in that way

My transport next Monday ;)

Wherever you are off to have a great time :)

I see one of my pictures is being used in a flight compo advert :cautious:

I hope that they're paying you, or have at least asked for permission.

Kevin

Nope, I had no idea until I saw the ad tonight.

Harry's gone. :ROFLMAO:

A brave move or a big mistake?

It has been pretty shocking so far! I guess his commitment may have come into question when he says that he took the job just to get out of the house.

So where next? Steve Cotterill? Nigel Pearson? Kevin Phillips?.......I wonder what Alex Mcleish is up to these days

A Grand Day Out (or two)

I was back in wonderful Brum last week, for a long weekend.
On Sunday, we visited the Back to Backs, for a view of how hard life was in 19th century Birmingham (many other cities also had Back to Back dwellings at the time).
On Monday, we visited Winterbourne House and Botanical Gardens (home of John Nettlefold, famed for the production of screws, nuts and bolts - later part of GKN), which gave a view of how the other half lived at around the same era.
Both were superb and I can thoroughly recommend them for a very interesting and informative visit.
Birmingham has a wonderful history, much of which is available to see today. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
