In theory the A220 would be an ideal replacement for the B733s. Having read several articles and seen a few videos about the A220s it seems they need a separate type rating, as they are really a C type Bombardier design

It's a perfect replacement for the old 300’s at LBA…….but Jet2 probably prefer to send a 60% full 738 our rather than add another model to the fleet….or maybe they will drop the routes once they have all gone.

They use 738s to Jersey from other bases (for example) so no reason not to do so from Leeds. They've used 738s previously too from here to most, if not all the routes operated now by 733s. I suspect one or two aren't ideal for a 738, but the likes of Mahon , Palma, Rome, Dubrovnik, Malaga, Alicante, Naples are all suitable for 738s even if some routes see a slight reduction in frequency.

Some, possibly. I think most are being introduced so Jet2 can increase their programme of holidays and flights.

Air Austral has announced it will ditch its Airbus A220-300 fleet due to persistent issues with the Pratt & Whitney GTF engines. After repeated reliability problems and grounding of two of its three A220s, the carrier says it has no choice but to retire the type.

This move isn’t isolated — Egyptair also pulled the plug on its 12-aircraft A220 fleet in early 2024, offloading them to lessor Azorra amid similar concerns.

The GTF engine woes (corrosion, cracking, manufacturing defects) have plagued operators especially in warmer climates, pushing airlines to cut losses.

Think this winter is going to be survival of the fittest. As I have posted previously, senior management at work are advising a difficult upcoming period for the travel industry. We are fortunate at LBA that we have in the main some very "fit" airlines, not least of which is our based carrier

It can all turn bad very quickly in the airline industry. Boom and bust seems to be a common theme. Ive seen it many times over the years.
