Query if I may?

Is Monarch the last remaining airline from the 20th century still in existence in it's original name?

Britannia became Thomson/Tui,

Orion became .... er Mytravel or was it Airtours? And where did they go? Was there also an airline called DUO? Did they absorb the BA regional routes?

BCAL was together later on with Dan Air swallowed up by the great beast. And British Midland suffered the same fate.

Anyone have any info on the former and the current incarnations?

Orion was absorbed into Britannia which then became Thomsonfly. Air 2000 became First Choice Airways which was taken over by TUI and the current Thomson Airways was formed.

Thomas Cook Airlines has evolved from the likes of Caledonian, JMC, MyTravel and IIRC Ambassador?

Either way Monarch is the only surviving brand name although the Monarch of today is very different from that of the 1960s

Great to see LCA continue for Winter, they must have had a change of heart (see Facebook messages below). I emailed Paul Kehoe regarding the fact that this would be the first winter for decades with no direct flights to Larnaca so perhaps something went on behind the scenes there. Monarch may have also felt pressure to keep their market share with a number of Cypriot start-up airlines targeting the UK.

Me: Hi there - I usually fly with Monarch from BHX to LCA at various points throughout the year. I have just looked for November 2016 and its showing there being no flights...have you discontinued the route for the winter season? It's usually year-round. If so, this is a great shame as Monarch are(/were!) the only year-round operator on the route.
Monarch: Hi Pete, we are only operating to Larnaca from Birmingham during the Summer season. I'm sorry for any disappointment this may cause. ^NG

Monarch's Inaugurals from Birmingham Airport to Lisbon and Madrid Take Flight

Monarch celebrated the launch to two new routes from Birmingham Airport to Lisbon and Madrid last Friday.

Cabin Crew were present at check-in to greet customers with a celebratory glass of fizz and a cupcake.

Monarch cabin crew were on hand to help with the celebrations with two dressed in vintage Monarch uniform, one which was worn on Monarch’s very first flight to Madrid back in 1968.

Monarch’s Chief Commercial Officer, Adrian Tighe was joined by Aviation Development Director for Birmingham Airport William Pearson at Monarch’s check-in desk at Birmingham Airport to celebrate the launch of the airlines new flights to Lisbon and Madrid.

Adrian Tighe, said: “We are delighted to add two new routes to our Birmingham programme. We are the only UK airline to fly direct to Lisbon from Birmingham Airport and now our customers have two new city break destinations to choose from when flying out of Birmingham Airport with Monarch.”

William Pearson, said: “Monarch is a reputable and longstanding partner of ours and adding two new capital cities to the portfolio of destinations available from Birmingham demonstrates the carrier’s commitment to the region and ambition to offer reliable, affordable travel for Midlanders. We congratulate the team for the successful launch of its Madrid and Lisbon flights and look forward to working with them over the busy summer months.”

I believe that a 'dry lease' is when an airline leases just the aircraft and supplies crew etc itself. In a 'wet lease' the airline leases the aircraft along with crew, maintenance and any other services required. Effectively, paying another airline to run the service.
I suspect a 'damp lease' lies somewhere between the two and is negotiated by the interested parties.

There will be three to start with, all of which are to be Birmingham based.

They are a precursor to the arrival of the MAX.

Apparently so.

I think there will be some expansion, there are some new routes being planned at the moment, but I doubt if we'll be up to 12 aircraft.

Of course things can and do change so we'll see.
