My reading of the planning statement leaves me to believe staff west along with T2 long stay already has consent for use as part of the Apron for 19 more stands but they won't be using this area yet. There will only be one more stand on the existing apron.

No that area over staff west will be developed as its integral to being able to knock down pier C which is one of the main aims of the initial stages of construction. They want to get rid of that bottleneck as soon as possible.

The increase by only one stand refers to the fact that even though the new area of apron comes into use with 12 stands, the stands around pier C will be taken out of use so a loss of 11 stands, thus the increase of only 1 in the initial stage.

The overall plan will se about 30-35 new stands created.

I hope your right but the planning statement clearly states that only the existing apron will be used and re configured now with one extra stand.

As the statement makes clear the planning application is not about expansion but updating.Basically they will get rid of T1 and T2 extension which will be smaller will allow for a more efficient airport by having one bigger T2 as oppose to a smaller T2 and outdated T1 .

The planning permissions may be worded strangely, but, EVERY meeting I attended about the T2 redevelopment stated that car parks built/moved first, then apron over staff west, then T2 extension starts and pier C removed in sycronisation.

I have no reason to doubt this plan has altered in any significant way given it was a clear message from the start, and, to my knowledge, still is.

The planning app is for a certain phase of works and some of the statements made might not make sense when considering the finalised plan (e.g. Lack of extra stands).

I agree with user, when the new T2 is finished the stand capacity will significantly increase.

User - will have a look and see if the plan is to cover the old part of the T2 building. I know the inside is to be gutted - but I'll try and see what the end game is for the externals and let you know.

The T2 development looks bloody stupid.

When this T2 redevelopment was announced, Brad Miller, the MAG man behind the project said that as well as adding capacity, it was an effort to end the 'bolt on, hap-hazard' nature of MAN and have a world class facility.

So, what do they do? They 'bolt on' the extension of T2' pretty much leaving the existing parts of T2 as they are. So, it looks like a glass structure banged up on the side of T2.

What I was hoping for was for a single 'harmonious' new frontage which was all the same design, and the same for the airside aesthetics too.

Swing and a miss design wise.

What's interesting is that the plans have changed slightly.

There is a new 4th pier added according to the plans, and the T2 main body extension will happen a lot sooner than expected. Initially 2016 was going to be just utilities and new car parks only, but it seems the full whack will start right away.

If you can access the "Design Access Statement" document, there is a drawing of the expanded T2. This drawing clearly shows the "bolt on" part of the extension. Under these plans they will re-jig the internal space (floor levels etc.) of the old building to match the new building. Based on this, I think it is reasonable to suppose that the old building will not be knocked down.

There are no plans to re-clad the existing building, the new building is designed to "match" the old one - presumably the old building will be tidied up so it matches the new one. Different from the original renders. These plans are by no means definitive, and subsequent planning apps will be required to complete the job - including an extended baggage hall - so this may not be a definitive position.

I have doubts that T1 (Pier C aside) will go any time soon. I suspect the reason this has been included in the current application is so they can say there is a net reduction in terminal space to the planners - once T1 has gone.

I think you must be right because that seems the only sensible way to do it. Unfortunately the Planning statement is far from clear on this and not only is vague but sometimes contradictory. The whole thrust of the statement is to make clear that this development is modernisation and not expansion and the end result will be neutral. The expanded T2 will in fact be noticeable smaller than the old T2 + T1 in floor area but will be far better in all ways.
When it comes to the apron etc it all becomes messy. It is stated the piers will be done at a later date. The extension to the Apron over Staff west etc is stated vaguely in one place to be done as part of this development but in others not. What it does say is that when the piers are done at a later stage there will be only one extra stand overall which if that is the case is worrying.

Another thing I have noticed is that if the indicative piers shown on the plan are as long as they are shown then they can't get a parallel taxiway in at the end of the piers there isn't the room.

I think the taxiway is two way up to a certain size class of aircraft. Something like an A380 or B777 would be one way only but something like a B787 would be two way.

I think the larger aircraft stands are towards the tip of the pier to ease movement - this is more User's field of expertise I suspect.

I thought it was of interest looking at the layout of the piers, the size of the parking stands and because of the two "branded" aircraft on show one was an Emirates A380 and the other an Etihad A380.

A sign of days to come? Time will tell.

The planning hearing for the Manchester Airport TP is due to be heard at a meeting of the Manchester City Council Highways and Planning Committee later today, 3rd March 2016. The meeting commences at 14:00, though the TP is item 15 on the agenda so other applications are likely to be considered first. The Manchester Airport application is available as a PDF download from the Manchester City Council website. 33 pages of detail ... an ideal bedtime read!

The hearing is available for viewing via a live webcast beginning at 14:00. Access is via the Manchester City Council website. However, the material will be archived on the city council website and should be available for viewing at your leisure later on. The website indicates that there is a facility which will allow you to jump straight to the application of interest on the archived version, though I've never had reason to try this out.

Fingers crossed for the right outcome. Biggest news since the second runway was approved if all goes well.

Ringway Parish Council are lodging an objection, even though the airport boundary isn't being expanded to my knowledge. Very much a David vs Goliath thing. I'm sure Goliath will win this time though 😉

The fly through and renders certainly show a huge amount of wide body aircraft. I for one hope it is a sign of what is to come.

This is only one aspect of the development to come, and I hope the local, regional and national surface access plans start to come together.

The options to extend HS2 to Glasgow and edinburgh were set out today. The full captive option would take London to Scotland journeys down to 2:30 or less.

Why is this relevant to MAN? Well it could bring the central belt of Scotland into the catchment area as a driver for more growth.

i thought I would start this thread, because, while there is much discussion and excitement at the range of new flights, but, something far more exciting and significant is starting this year, and deserves its own thread.

basically, Manchester airport, from October this year, is going to be one huge construction site.

Yes, there is going to be much disruption, and the next few years will see it's fair share of bad reviews and disgruntled passengers, as building work rarely moves slowly.

So, what's happening?

Firstly, and probably most notably, is the Terminal 2 re-development. This will see the complete transformation of the airport experience.

Work on this is starting next month, however, it will be October time before anything 'noticeable' starts happening. The works will see an enlarged check in area, with many advances such as self service check in desks, multi-lingual adverts/signs using LCD technology, US pre-clearance, more lounges and of course the finger piers to add more contact stands.

The work taking place so far is removing the car park on the apron stands, some survey work and utilities. Staff west, the main car park beyond the apron is set to be removed soon, and the airport perimeter moved to make more apron space.

This will probably be the project that takes up most of the interest, but, it's not the only thing happening.

The other projects are airport city north, airport city south (logistics) and the potential HS2 station to the east of the site.

Airport city south is well advanced already. DHL has been on site for a few months now. Manchester did see a brief series of B757 flights, however, they were short lived as the warehouse was only running at 20% capacity and therefore not supplying enough work for the flights. Word is, the flights will be back once the site hits 60% capacity, which is supposedly happening in November.

The other tenants are Amazon, who are fitting out their HUGE warehouse as I type, and is said to also bring in direct freight flights to the USA to supply the site. Alpha is the other tenant on site. According to news reports, there are other tenants lined up for the logistics hub, with apparently one firm looking to take over the rest of the whole site. No idea who that is, but, that's a huge land requirement so will be interesting to see.

Airport city North. This will finally break ground in October and again add to the building site feel. The first bit of the project will be hotels and offices in the space near the rail station and 'Voyager' building (Voyager is Etihads European HQ and contact centre).

There has been a lot of work re-locating some of the car parks and vegetation, and the expansion of the motorway junction in front of T2 will be the next bits to be done in tandem with the offices behind voyager.

The last bit will be the HS2 station, which will be adjacent to the M56 and have a tram link to the terminals. This is a 'back burner' project dependent on the actual HS2 project, so, will only be updated if anything needs to be updated.

I will try and get some images onto the thread soon, and of course, will use this thread to update on the works, but, this is going to be a huge project so will be sure to get lots of updates.
