Pop to India: the proposition of Stansted's newest long-haul airline
People Over Profit is the mantra of a new low-cost airline flying from London to India

POP's launch destinations are Amritsar (Punjab) and Ahmedabad (Gujarat), two of India's key "secondary cities", and part of the airline's plans to "provide air services between the extensive Indian communities in the UK and South Asia" says the airline,

New Delhi: A British businessman of Indian origin is planning to start a new long-haul budget airline this year with flights from London to Ahmedabad and Amritsar.

Partly crowd-funded, People Over Profit, or Pop, as the airline is called, expects to launch direct flights from London Stansted to India by October 2016 and plough in half its profits into charities.

“We are hoping to start from 1 October to Amritsar and 2 October to Ahmedabad, which is obviously Gandhiji’s birthday so that would be a great day,” Navdip Singh Judge, chairman and principal of Pop, said in a phone interview from London.

Good luck but I won't hold my breath. FlyForBeans comes to mind.

I won't either.

Before the eventual return of Air India, Birmingham has a long list of failed attempts at the Indian market, everything from Air Sylhet to Poo Air. One short lived service had to have a whip round of the cabin whilst on a stopover in Vienna so the pilot could pay the fuel bill.

Good luck to them though.

I'd be surprised if this one gets off the ground. Donating half the profits? Nice idea but airlines don't make much of that anyway, and what they do make goes back into the product normally.

Nah, this has got bad news written all over it. But, I suppose STN is desperate to prove its long haul capability outside of TOM/TCX, so, seems like they will accept literally any offer.

Your are correct that many small ventures in this space have failed- with dismal track records and shady set ups. They all suffered form being inadequately funded or Chartered Flights - both scenarios come with huge limitations. Lets not forget the with frills long haul model - has never made money. So your initial reaction is right - but these guys are not following that path.

These guys claim they wont fly without an OL, and return the crowds funds if they do not get one. They promote a low-cost long haul model akin with WOW - so lets wait and see. The team on paper look like a sensible bunch - and for the first time a charitable bunch at that.

Its disruptive and different- I hope they succeed - just to freshen up the atmosphere of stale scepticism.

I hope that you are right VarinderP but, for example, FlyForBeans also had substantial backing and senior officers with proven track records in the industry but that never went beyond the planning stages, although it has to be said that 2007 was not the most favourable time to launch a new relatively small airline with a base and HQ at one of the smaller UK regional airports (CWL).

A strong rumour on the dried plum forum of a Jet2 base at STN for 2017.
Funnily enough that rumour began on Forums4Airports yesterday on both the LBA and CWL Jet2 threads before it reached the fruit board this evening.

London Stansted sets sights on long-haul growth
Summary
At least 25 key destinations targeted across the globe, including the Far East, India, USA

London Stansted has available runway capacity to boost national and regional competitiveness

Aviation team fly out to make the case for Stansted at world-leading event in China

In the next five years London Stansted is aiming to secure direct services to at least 25 new long-haul destinations around the world, with a strong focus on the Far East, India, North America and the Middle East.

The airport is targeting the destinations that its analysis shows are already in high demand by passengers across its catchment area but it does not currently serve, including:

Hong Kong Los Angeles San Francisco Tokyo

Montreal Chicago Miami Guangzhou

Singapore Delhi Beijing Bangkok

Mumbai Johannesburg Seoul Shanghai

Kuwait Manila Vancouver Columbo

This week the Airport’s aviation team is heading to Guangzhou in China for the annual World Routes Conference – the largest global gathering of airlines and airports. Whilst in China the team is set to showcase London Stansted’s transformational £600 million redevelopment project to airlines from around the world and discuss network and growth opportunities that are available from the airport.

The team is seeking to build on recent successes including the launch earlier this summer of Emirates daily direct service between Stansted and Dubai, which has already enjoyed very strong ticket sales with many passengers connecting to Emirates’ global network of over 150 destinations via its Dubai hub.

As the London area’s fastest growing airport and with ambitious plans to maximise the potential of existing runway capacity, Stansted is well placed to meet rising demand from airlines across the world eager to gain access or grow within the London aviation market.

In addition, Stansted already provides the most direct connections to Europe of any UK airport, and this network is set to grow further as the airport works with existing and new carriers to provide even more choice.

People from across the region, and businesses in particular, regularly tell us they want London Stansted to offer a network of long-haul routes that will connect them to their key countries, customers and markets.

Stansted sits at the heart of one of the UK’s fastest growing and most successful economic regions, reflecting the competitiveness and ambition of the businesses trading here. We need to demonstrate this strength of demand to airlines who are not currently serving Stansted.

For example, we know that over 400,000 people are currently travelling from the London Stansted catchment area to Hong Kong each year. Another ambition we have is to build a direct connection between the knowledge centres of the technology clusters of Silicon Fen and Silicon Valley – similar to what the flight between the airport and Boston is doing for the two areas of bioscience expertise. If we can do this, these passengers will no longer have to make the time-consuming and expensive trips to other airports across the UK.

In the past year our aviation development team has made fantastic progress that has enabled us to secure six of the top 10 most in-demand routes including New York, Dubai, Boston, Washington, Toronto and Tel Aviv. We want to build on this success and add even more direct services to key destinations across China, India, North America and the Middle East.

Over the next decade, runway capacity in the south-east will be at a premium and Stansted will be responsible for delivering up to 50 per cent of London’s expected passenger growth and make a greater contribution to improving the UK’s connectivity with the rest of the world. It’s imperative we continue to develop our route network by unlocking our spare runway capacity and providing the best service and facilities, so airlines and passengers can easily and conveniently access the world from Stansted.

Having applied for slots, Indigo are now planning to operate via Georgia.

Seems they are not fazed by the long list of historical failures on one-stop UK-India flights.

Israir is planning a short series of flights to Eilat and Tel Aviv

MAG have done a superb job at both Manchester and Stansted exciting times ahead for both airports. Be interesting how quickly they can bring carriers to the apron.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
