I've been having a think about this and we potentially have a huge number of seats coming onto the market in a relatively short space of time. We don't know if First Class will become a permanent feature next year, there is some suggestion that it will do but for now we have to presume it will end on Dec 31st.

As of July 2015 there were 1708 daily seats available from BHX.

We've seen a new service start on a 77W with 720 extra seats per day available making 2428 in total.

As of Jan 1st that is due to revert to a 2 class 77W adding another 134 daily seats making an extra 854 daily seats over July or 2562 per day in total.

We then have the potential of an A380 sometime between Feb and May which will add another 376 daily seats, making a total of 2938 each day.

So in the space of of approx 8 months we could see the daily total go from 1708 seats to 2938 seats which is very impressive. Obviously if First does become permanent then one or more lower density aircraft would be used lowering the seat count.

I wonder if Emirates have got a sniff of the potential competition on the horizon and are getting in there early? I don't think the 'A380 factor' can be underestimated either.

In the last few weeks EK 41/42 has seen a few higher density two class aircraft to accommodate high loads.

It's great to see them doing so well with the extra service, it sounds as if the A380 can't come soon enough

I hear our third daily service is taking on the extra cargo that Manchester has lost due to MAN getting a second and soon a third daily A380.

Presuming they then get a 77F in, and we get an A380 of our own, will that mean they start taking cargo back from us?

Interesting to watch things swing back and forth between MAN and BHX.

Well, MAN has lost more cargo space now.

The evening EK19/20 has switched from a 3 class A380 to 2 class A380. This means more pax bags and less cargo.

The 3rd A380 is due to be announced in November for MAN. if BHX gets its A380 too, then a dedicated cargo flight is definitely needed.

The good thing about cargo is it doesn't mind where it travels from and Emirates have the luxury of being able to truck goods around their network to meet the particular demand at the time. From what I hear it's not unusual for London overspill to be trucked to the continent.

I believe EK Sky Cargo recently took delivery of another aircraft so you'd have to assume that LHR will see another flight soon, should they be able to get one in there that is. I think it's also just a matter of time before they enter the market from EMA.

I'm told cargo from EMA is very very unlikely. STN and MAN are the 2 likely contenders, as given by the UK and Eire manager of EK Skycargo.

I believe LHR is now close to being maxed out on their slot quota.

Hi there ray, some very close family member informed me last night, that at a club they belong too,I certain high manager at Birmingham airport _ is name was I think Mr Andy Holding, asked about emirates a380, about its refuelling, was told that when emirates departs from bhx, it never takes off with full fuel tanks, apparently, due to its big heavy fuel tanks on board, it's unable to take off with 100 % full fuel load, can only take up to 75% only, also this guy said that fuel is nothing to do with length of runway at all....andyc

Hi mate, thanks for the info.

I believe that with a totally full load the A380 needs around 3500m but to Dubai the fuel would be nowhere near full.

Whilst on the subject of fuel I heard that Emirates have requested a fuel hydrant on 54C, all stands at BHX are currently fuelled by lorries.

Read a posting in "the dried plum" saying one of the Manchester services will switching from 2 class to 3 class on 27th March 2016.

Is it possible that some of the reduction in PAX is scheduled to be taken up by a 380 service from Birmingham. I can see the benefits especially if there is a good fill of premium seats from Manchester.

The reason for the drop back to3 class isn't to re-route pax to BHX, it's another reason that will be announced mid-November on the 25th anniversary party day.

Anything to do with the loads perhaps?

The last time I saw Tim Clark mention 'Birmingham' and 'A380' in the same sentence was back in 2009 when we had one for the birthday celebrations.

The two-class superjumbo’s could also “possibly” fly on services to London Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham in the United Kingdom, Clark told reporters at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual meet.

It's only a 'possibly' but better than no mention at all.

There are also bits and pieces happening on stand 54C so we need to keep an eye out for the start of the jet bridge works.

Much as I'd love to see the A380, surely they'd be looking at consistently filling the 773s/77Ws before making that decision? Although I think they are close to doing so most of the time.

I'm hearing rumours that Stand 54c will be out of actions soon for 'works to be completed'.. and I suspect that filling the daily 777s is only one consideration, the other being what impact the Qatar launch may have ....How else would an airlines overshadow the launch of one of its competitors?

As said elsewhere the preliminary works on 54C start tonight and it's thought that the A380 start date could be bought forward to March to compete with Qatar. What are the chances of them both having a March 30th start date?

The link below is to the EK two class A380 seat layout, 58 Business and 557 Economy. I'm not sure I'd fancy arriving behind it :shok:

At least BHX is investing in the 3rd jetbridge.

MAN has that monster starting Jan 1st and will still have to be turned in 90 minutes with just 2 bridges. Emirates have put a little too much faith in MAN being able to do that, it's a tall order.

MAN has to wait 6 years before there is a gate with 3 bridges, as they have said T1 will not have any work done unless nessesary now that it is being demolished.

I can only assume BHX is making these alterations because it was pre-requisite of Emirates... How did MAN get away with not doing this???

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
