Well if the evening service is the busiest flight out of the 3 flights, then this makes good business sense. And maybe just maybe they want to keep the cargo capacity at BHX for the time being. Introducing a second A380 at BHX would reduce this by quite a bit and with MAN going all A380, there cargo capacity will reduce further.
Why does a passenger A380 carry less cargo than a 77W?

It carries less as there are more passengers so more bags and thus less room for cargo. Also, the overall weight of the aircraft means less cargo weight.

The B77W has been likened to an articulated truck with passenger space.

More reason why they may wanna keep some 777s on these routes then.

Talking of A380s,does anyone know what happened to EK40 this afternoon?
EK39 landed a tad early,A6-EUD first visit?
As yet though it hasn't departed.Has it gone tech?

Figures are from Wiki so may not be 100% accurate.

A380 maximum cargo space is 184 m3 (6,500 cu ft)
77W maximum cargo space is 216 m3 (7,640 cu ft)

Yeah it's gone tech, not heard of an ETD yet.

Thank you - this seems logical!

I wouldn't panic just yet - a dummy booking on the Emirates website for June next year is still showing an A380 on the lunchtime flight as opposed to the evening flight so I should imagine booking systems still need to be updated. Besides I would have thought BHX would sought some assurances from EK before spending all that money on upgrading the A380 gate.

Thanks for the info Ray, mmmmmmmmmmm lets hope that it is a glitch in the system and as you say if the A380 is showing on the lunchtime flight then it does appear that the timetable is all over the place. I thought the same about the assurances from EK after spending money on upgrading the airbridges but i dont think airlines nowadays are that sympathetic towards airports. I have heard that a couple of weeks ago an EK flight was delayed becouse the BHX baggage system was not able to cope with the amount of bags, now if this is the case and there have been other problems then i think we do need to prepare ourselves for the possibility that the A380 could be shelved from BHX and this would probably be becouse the infrastructure is not up to the job (If that is the case of course). There could be other reasons why EK may cut the A380 at BHX, but i suppose we will just have to wait and see.

Either way i can see this EK thread being busy over the next week or two awaiting more news on this.

The announcement of the transfer of A380 to evening slot is still fresh and even if pulling out of BHX, the stand remains in place for ALL aircraft that may divert into or operate a scheduled service from BHX.

The airside investment has been made, the terminal now needs to match the aircraft. It is time for the ownership and shareholders to spend a little upon the internal facilities that actually matter the most and not passenger pleasures, as if there were not enough already in place to invite missing passengers at the gate due to 'shopping' diversions, thus delaying departures.

I frequently read of 'baggage' retrieval as a problem with regular breakdowns of the belts that transfer luggage from airside to baggage hall.

Do any other airports of similar status in UK or elsewhere report such problems?

Birmingham has growing pains, it needs care and treatment or it shall stagnate at current capacity until someone decides to give the airport some steroids and quickly before airlines pull out.

I've just looked on 2 GDS as well as Google flights (which uses Amadeus IIRC) and all showing B777 on all flights from March.

Maybe they have other routes where the A380 fly that make them more money? Especially if they are sending aircraft in with First Class and not being able to sell those seats. It may be that the perfect fit for Emirates BHX route is a 777.

Well going by Twitter it appears as if travel agents are now advising customers that BHX will be all 777 next summer. I realise that they will just go by the GDS screen but if it is just a case of an update being needed then BHX should be all over this to get it done.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
