Whilst being hooked on the olympic games over the last week or so and enjoying the great success Team GB have had, i do find it rather annoying that our national anthem is so short compared to other nations. Sometimes the Union Jack hasnt even reached the top of the flag pole when the anthem has already finished :rage:, surely it is not out of all possibility for the anthem to be extended, i have heard an extended anthem many times during this years queen birthday celebrations so i know there is one out there.

What do other people think ?? Who would i write too to express my view, my local MP, directly to our new prime minister, UK Sport ????

I think it might be to cut out the bit about rebellious Scots!

Funny i was talking about our national anthem the other day while it was playing. And she said that it has a 2nd verses, but if you ask anyone to sing it they wouldn't be able to.

Even just playing another verse is better than what they are currently playing in Rio which last about 30 seconds. This version is over 1 minuite (y)

I think the British national anthem is a bit of a dirge. It doesn't stir me in any way so one verse is plenty for me. i pity the Queen having to listen to it many, many thousands of times in her lifetime.

On a sort of related point, why doesn't England have its own national anthem or national song at football and rugby matches? To play the British national anthem always strikes me a touch arrogant and in no way does it relate solely to England.

I am English, by the way.

I agree with you 100% about England not having its own anthem. England should have its own anthem.

I love the British National anthem though and just want it to be longer when we are celebrating what we have achieved, why shouldnt we ??

If im being honest i am English, but i always class myself as British First and English is second, i know some people will find that totally absurd, but there you go

It does seem that too many British people don't overtly show a pride in their country. When I go to Australia or Canada it's obvious that the majority of residents, including new ones who have emigrated from other countries (except perhaps some Britons), are immensely proud of their country and its heritage.

It's shown in small ways in that a major world city such as Melbourne has relatively little litter in the streets compared with large British cities and towns (and small ones for that matter); Australians by and large keep to speed limits and there is not the drink-filled yobbish behaviour found in most British cities especially at weekends.

Even the national broadcasters appear inclusive. The ABC News in Australia usually speaks about 'our government' whereas the BBC and ITV and Sky invariably say 'British government' in this country.

As for England, anyone who professes to be an English patriot is invariably viewed as some sort of dangerous racist, unlike in Wales or Scotland or Ireland where patriotism in those countries is actively encouraged and widely admired. I know that the 'two' Irelands have their own special problems but residents in both seem patriotic in their own ways.

Perhaps that's why pride in Britain, as opposed to the constituent countries, is not widely seen. I suspect that many Welsh and Scottish people regard themselves as Welsh or Scottish first and British second, if at all.

As a proud Welshman who is also a royalist, i've never really seen God Save the Queen as my anthem, mine is the Welsh anthem which i sing with gusto every time!

Shows how well Wales is doing.

It has its own government and its own anthem and its own secretary of state in the Westminster parliament, something denied to England, :jawdrop: as well as its own language.

I must say our country and its name is rather confusing sometimes. I mean in Football we are England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. In the Olympics we are called Great Britain and Northern Ireland and in the Eurovision Song Contest (LOL) we are the United Kingdom.

Personally i think devolution was done completely wrong and is a big mess! You have 3 countries of the UK all with different versions and different powers. Air passenger duty is an example of that mess. I think a more federal approach with England split into regions would have been a better approach.
And i can never understand why England just doesn't use Jerusalem as it's anthem it seems a better option.

I think that Land of My Fathers is one of the most stirring national anthems of any in the world. The music is immense and so are the words.

This YouTube version, sung in Welsh, displays all the words in both Welsh and English. There is even a picture of an Air Wales ATR 42 if you stick with the video long enough.

Always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stick up when i hear that! Only words of welsh that me and many welsh people know! And i've never seen the English translation before! I doubt many would know the english translation if they were asked! I was looking at photos of Air Wales a couple of days ago a Dornier 228 it was. Always wondered if someone would ever try and resurrect them.

I do like the Welsh anthem. It's so much better than "God save the Queen" which despite it's title actually sounds disappointingly morbid. I used to like Rule Britannia but the song makes me cringe these days. I think "Land of hope and glory" would make a good national anthem for the UK but if Scotland and Wales leave the UK after Brexit then I'll be campaigning for "Ilkley moor bah tat".

Wales will never leave the UK! At least not in my lifetime! There's more chance of Yorkshire becoming independent!:LOL:Don't think Scotland will either at least not for another 30 years.
Another anthem i like is 'Irelands call' though i know it's not an official anthem just sung at the rugby!

Is that the rousing bit that starts, "Ireland, Ireland....."? If so, like you, I think that's wonderful.

Songs including England in the title.

There'll always be an England
Rose of England (written by Welshman, Ivor Novello)
The Fisherman of England.

There'll always be an England
was written in 1939 and adopted as something of a war anthem. Much of it is germane today although the reference to Empire would doubtless upset some. The tune is quite rousing.

From around 44 seconds into the tape - the beginning is an introduction to the main song.

YouTube link broken.

A personal view but I consider the UK Anthem funerial whilst the French Anthem is spine tingling especially the version arranged by composer Berlioz.

The Italian anthem is funny and frankly the rest are better than Britain can offer though Wales and Scotland give theirs some heart and gusto. I just hope the England never turn to Elgar, so predictable.

It's amazing how much I've changed in 4 years!
Irelands call is still a great anthem!

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
