Anyone know what the new policy is regarding parking on taxiways? This happened yesterday and won't have been on the fly. Is there a new excess traffic plan?

btw Simon Lowe mentioned that G-XWBG will be blocking a taxiway for a while. Hit by lightning and needs a few checks before cleared to depart.

Aircraft can be parked on taxiways. Usually only happens if they’re short of stands. The aircraft will park and then the airport personnel will put background markers out (red and white color) which indicates that the taxiway is closed and is technically a stand in which ground crew would be able to use to do their work on the aircraft. ATC would also be made aware so they can direct aircraft through other taxiways.

PIK used to handle many diversions and the terminal could cope but the staffing level couldn`t
True but when a flight needs to land and options are few and far between then handling considerations are the least of your concerns.

I was once told LBA could accept the A380 on the same principle. It would only be able to position out empty and it would need to park on a taxiway but it could be done. The chance of it ever happening is extremely low though as there are plenty of better options before a pilot would need to choose a short field option.

MAN managed to squeeze 4 airliners and a biz jet on divert from BHX today. Further diverts went to LPL or stayed south.

I've not seen the state of the apron for a while. Is MAN really restricted now for diversions space and are we now waiting for the cargo sheds to come down and hard stand to be constructed to provide more remote?

Todays list:

G-DRTK Boeing B.737-800(WL) Jet2 EXS1204 Malaga Birmingham
G-GDFF Boeing B.737-800(WL) Jet2 EXS301T Newquay Birmingham
G-SUND Airbus A.321-200NX Jet2 EXS2NR Faro Birmingham
EI-EFH Boeing B.737-800(WL) Ryanair RYR83EE Bucharest Birmingham
I-FLDR Hawker 900XP Slam Lavori Aerei ??? Lamezia Birmingham

I'm sure MAN is restricted for diversion space. That said, whether there are any taxiways that could be used in certain circumstances I don't know.
It used to be the airfield duty manager / Ops 3 together with the handling agents on any particular day that made the decisions as to what diversions could be accepted and I assume that is still the case.

Also worth checking the notams periodically to see what the situation is on taxiway and additional stand closures and other construction work. That, as well as limited parking stands at the best of times, I imagine, will also influence decisions about diversions.

Really depends on a day by day basis. In general however diverts are seen as a nuisance so little effort is made to accommodate them. Easier to just refuse.

Apron space is of course limited with the current works but as above - little effort is made to accommodate any additional flights.

Thanks for your comments as always. Have to say I'm a little surprised as those of us who have taken an interest in diversions over the years have noted a more positive approach in recent times. For some years pre-covid, MAN had gained an unenviable reputation as the airport that liked to say "No". As well as the airport's attitude, handling agents were said to be understaffed and unwilling to work overtime to handle the extra traffic. All too frequently, there was a "no-divs" notam. There were reports that the airport had been warned to adopt a more accommodating policy.

The impression from the outside was the new MD may also have emphasised the more accommodating attitude which had started to take affect. That said, it's perfectly understandable, given all the apron work involved in the TP, that MAN's ability to accept diversions, particularly at busy times, is extremely limited. What is a greater concern is how quickly the airport can develop more parking stands to facilitate its own growth after the TP is finally completed.
Edit: In a previous post referencing the notams, I should have added that we are very grateful for the regular updates that CCGE29 provides on the situation on apron work and pier 2 progress.

I normally have only included the following in my daily logs, however, whilst having a sleepless night I though it might help if I included them here.

Sunday 10th August
TUI 2 (BY689/BY2659) both diverted to BHX & Jet2 1 (LS808) diverted to LPL. All subsequently returned to MAN. easyJet (U22051) returned to MAN.

I'm not sure where they're parking these and more requests:

1646- EI-DEE Airbus A.320-200 Aer Lingus EIN875 Tenerife Cork
1651- EI-IHK Boeing B.737-8 MAX Ryanair RYR843X Faro Dublin

There seems to be a multitude of delays from Manchester Airport today, any reason?

There was a prolonged unplanned runway closure on 23R/05L this morning to allow a pothole to be fixed. 23L/05R config requires a significantly reduced landing rate. Weather was poor also which complicated things. All back open now, but backlog to be cleared.

First diversion of 2026, Central Airlines 777-F Chengdu-East Midlands (SNOCLO) arrived 0653.

Interesting that MAN accepted this 'non-resident' whose alternate was Stansted but then the later EMA arrival Ethiopian 777-F from Hong Kong (approach from north) went to Gatwick, arriving at 0942.

I believe they were short of wide body stands, one taken up by the Chinese 777 and PIA 777 plus non of our eary morning flights had gone including the Qatar and Etihad which were delayed by slots for departure so it went to Gatwick because they handle Ethiopian

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
