Aircraft can be parked on taxiways. Usually only happens if they’re short of stands. The aircraft will park and then the airport personnel will put background markers out (red and white color) which indicates that the taxiway is closed and is technically a stand in which ground crew would be able to use to do their work on the aircraft. ATC would also be made aware so they can direct aircraft through other taxiways.Anyone know what the new policy is regarding parking on taxiways? This happened yesterday and won't have been on the fly. Is there a new excess traffic plan?
btw Simon Lowe mentioned that G-XWBG will be blocking a taxiway for a while. Hit by lightning and needs a few checks before cleared to depart
True but when a flight needs to land and options are few and far between then handling considerations are the least of your concerns.PIK used to handle many diversions and the terminal could cope but the staffing level couldn`t
I'm sure MAN is restricted for diversion space. That said, whether there are any taxiways that could be used in certain circumstances I don't know.
It used to be the airfield duty manager / Ops 3 together with the handling agents on any particular day that made the decisions as to what diversions could be accepted and I assume that is still the case.
Also worth checking the notams periodically to see what the situation is on taxiway and additional stand closures and other construction work. That, as well as limited parking stands at the best of times, I imagine, will also influence decisions about diversions.

Thanks for your comments as always. Have to say I'm a little surprised as those of us who have taken an interest in diversions over the years have noted a more positive approach in recent times. For some years pre-covid, MAN had gained an unenviable reputation as the airport that liked to say "No". As well as the airport's attitude, handling agents were said to be understaffed and unwilling to work overtime to handle the extra traffic. All too frequently, there was a "no-divs" notam. There were reports that the airport had been warned to adopt a more accommodating policy.Really depends on a day by day basis. In general however diverts are seen as a nuisance so little effort is made to accommodate them. Easier to just refuse.
Apron space is of course limited with the current works but as above - little effort is made to accommodate any additional flights.

What was the reason for the diverts away yesterday?
