Never mind lost routes, how about those missing services?

I have always lamented the absence of WASHINGTON, ATLANTA, LAX or SFO in the USA, MOSCOW in the east, a decent CHINESE service with UK a good option for inward Chinese travel.

Nothing of note for non tourist traffic to Africa. Is BHX expanding at random or by design?

On a personal note, my apologies for my absence, my disability benefits were withdrawn, my vehicle was seized and I had yet another stroke to keep me busy but Virgin Media decided to cancel my Direct Debit then withdrew internet services.

Is life not interesting?

Good to see you back. Hope things improve for you.

In the past I've heard people say that they used to fly down to London.

They certainly did I was about 13 years old when my parents bought me a ticket for my birthday, early morning flight the
day spent on Queens building roof gardens evening return

The flight was on a viscount which probably remains my favorite aircraft I think it's the oversize windows they had.
Did the same again when they put vanguards on the route.

On the subject of lost routes I'm pretty sure Ostend is one as I remember my mom flying there
On British Midland who used to operate a series of flights every spring also to Beauvais using Argonauts
And DC3s

All in the mid sixties when England had a decent football team,!

Hello Rollo.I was wondering if many people used these flights.

During the early seventies Dan Air Skyways (they had bought out Skyways and merged them into their own operation) operated Link City services with HS748 BOH/BHX/MAN/NCL and return on a couple of days a week - the northbound and southbound flights crossed at BHX (10 minute turnrounds). I was working in BOH and lived in Brum and used the flights quite often and surprisingly there were always a few others who would join the flight to BOH. I don't think we will ever see this one returning though !

Quite horrendous i would imagine. I remember booking a return flight to Dublin about 4 months in advance back in 1985 with Aer Lingus and it was about £65.That's getting on for £200 today. You could book at least 4 flights today for the same amount. Much as we love to hate them we owe a lot to Ryanair and Easyjet.

On the other hand we do have a longer runway, much of it free by any nasty rubber stains. Once you have negotiated the dingy check in area there are lovely shops in the Mall, sorry departure lounge whilst you wait for your flight to Palma Alicante or Ibiza.. The link to the Railway station is also increasingly busy with passengers taking advantage of the airports transport interchange.Or is that people being dropped and collected from outside the station to avoid the extortionate airport parking charges?
It's not all bad news.

Hi there Ray and all, what shocking amount of routes that has been said Lost, I think I counted 115 in total. But Ray aren't any of those routes still served by other carriers at all, or is it being said that no current carriers serve any of those routes any more. Andyc

The list of routes posted by Matt go back to 1986 so some of them have been missing for many years and are unlikely to ever return.

The 25 routes that I posted have been (I think) lost since Matt's post on May 12th 2017 and now remain totally unserved from Birmingham.

Before we get all depressed with the lost routes, you have to remember all UK airports will have plenty of lost routes since 1986. Even Heathrow and Manchester, it's always going to happen!!

However it does show how important it is for any airport to have airlines that have a base or hub for new routes. With the currently Flybe situation are we really only left with Jet2, TUI and Ryanair? what we would give for a new airline to set up a base/hub!!

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
