A thread to share the current film and TV shows that might be of interest to others;

Anyone with a love of 80s pop culture who liked things like Stand By Me or The X Files will no doubt love this;

If it's for current shows I can't really help, I haven't watched tv since the 70's but I might have a look at that 'love island' thing .:mooning:

I've just started watching 'Timewasters' on ITV 2. It's a Sci-Fi comedy, where a jazz quartet (very modern jazz - 'Hey-Ya', being an example) are transported back from the modern day, to the 1920's (via a disgusting lift and the advice of an equally unwashed tramp).
So far, I've found it very funny and have loved the (brief) clips of music that they have performed.
I'll admit that I have a soft spot for the actress Adelayo Adedayo (who also starred in the BBC series Some Girls), but I won't let that influence my review of Timewasters.
Sorry, the only links that I can find are previews / interviews -

It was one of my favourite shows growing up but I’ve just watched the new series of The X Files and words cannot describe how awful it is. Nowhere near as good as it’s heyday, even the later years without Mulder were far superior than this tosh!

I finally got round to watching The Theory of Everything, what a great film.

The acting of Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones really is superb, so much so that I believe Professor Hawking himself was quite moved.

There are times when Prof Hawkins devilish sense of humour shines through and you laugh and there are times when it's hard to hold back the tears. For me it was the final scene when Prof Hawking and his estranged wife are watching their children play, those four words had the tears streaming down my face.

This must be the first film since Interstellar that has genuinely moved me.

It's one we've been meaning to watch. I might have to be when it's available to rent online now.

It's something that runs especially close to our hearts as the other half's farther died from Motor Neurone Disease when she was 5 years old.

We enjoyed it. It was as moving as you suggested but the tears didn't make an appearance although there were some close call moments. For Mrs Aviador it must have been a constant reminder of what her mother had to deal with when she was a child. Very moving and recommendable to anyone who's not yet seen it.

Has anyone been watching 'Britains biggest warship'? A very insightful series, showing the sea trials, crew training, teething problems etc of our new Aircraft Carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.
I've found it thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommend it. Shown on BBC2, you can catch up on BBCi Player.

I have the series recorded, glad it was good :)

I've been watching 'Building Giants' on More 4 which is quite interesting. The first episode was about the huge sea defences protecting Venice with last week about the construction on the Sagrada Familia. I believe tonight's instalment is about a bridge in Norway.

Have had Dunkirk since Christmas and finally got to see it on Sunday. Well, i have to say I thought it was rubbish. The 'characters' weren't developed at all, very little dialogue and the different timelines thing didn't really work for me. Also some corny moments such as what appeared to be six little ships rescuing the British Army which seemed to number a couple of hundred at most and the Spitfire pilot shooting down the Heinkel with a feathered prop (Think that's right, but can't be bothered to check) before JUST managing to pump down the undercarriage in time to make a perfect landing on the beach (think most would have chosen wheels up). I heard it claimed cgi wasn't used much in the aeriel scenes but there seemed to be more cgi than real aircraft. Haven't wanted a film to finish so much since Harlem Nights which I was conned into going to see many years ago.

I've recently watched 'The First Men In The Moon' on BBC4. This isn't the original film, but an adaption of the H.G. Wells classic first aired in 2010. Available on BBC iPlayer for the next 27 days.
It's set on the day of the first lunar landing, Appollo 11 with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
It starts off with a very old man expalining to a young boy that he and a Professor had been not only the first men on the Moon, but the first men in the Moon in 1909. It then moves on to show the adventure.
I found it very enjoyable and quite amusing in places.
A few of the amusing highlights were -

Just prior to take off, the Professor says 'cabin lights should be dimmed for take off, don't you think?'.

later, approaching landing an alarm sounds -

'What the Hell's that?'.
'Er, it's an alarm! Quickly, what do the instruments read?'. The numbers, read the numbers!'.
'Twelve Oh Two!'.
'I'd ignore it!'.
'What does it mean?'.
'Just ignore it!'.

This actually has historical significance, as on final desent, the Appollo 11 Lunar lander had numerous computer warnings stating '1202', which at that moment no one at NASA knew it's meaning.

At the end of the program, it returns to the old man saying to the young boy.

'I still have my precious cinamatography reels of course, but no ones ever taken the seriously. They say I must have faked it all in a film studio'.

Just like the modern conspiracy theorists who doubt that the Moon landings ever happened.

I'm a Scientist with a love of Sci-Fi, so am probably a little biased. But I highly recommend watching this while it's still available on BBC iPlayer.

Room 101 - Extra Storage tonight (BBC 1 17/08/18 22.35) is an extended edition of an episode shown a few months ago. It features Roisin Conaty, Nish Kumar and Chris Kamara. The whole episode is hilarious, and Chris Kamara is outtstanding.
It's also available on BBC iPlayer.
The only part I didn't like, was a brief reference to drugs.

I've been watching Gold quite a bit over the last few weeks.

Programmes such as Only Fools & Horses, The Vicar of Dibley, Last of the Summer Wine, Dad's Army etc I can watch time and time again.

I never could get on with Red Dwarf but Mrs F absolutely loves it.

It has to be KILLING EVE. Tonight at 21:00 BBC1. As complex and absorbing as ever, only a juicy thunderstorm will prevent me from a large malt and Maltesers will divert my attention!

Apologies for poor grammar.

We're just catching up on this series having not watched it before. We've managed Series 1 and are now on Series 2. Certainly a complex story line - I don't really know who is on whose side!! We'll see 2 more episodes tonight.

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.

Thanks for the support @SNOWMAN
Well over 4 million steps taken this year already. And about 12,500 photos.
The joys of travel. Train from Edinburgh to Leeds is cancelled so having another night in Edinburgh and heading back in the morning!
Tbf Edinburgh isn't a bad city to be stuck in.
