We’ve been watching Race Across the World which I highly recommend - series 2 ended last night but they’re both on the iPlayer.

I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but it relates to TV and I find it very amusing.
I have my TV supplied by Virgin and the system regularly suggests (and records) programmes for me. They are usually of little interest and get deleted. Tonight I noticed that the 'Suggestions' folder was flagged and took a look at what was there. Unbelievable! - it had recorded 4 hours of BBC4 'Off Air'. Yes, 4 hours of nothing :wideyed: !

I haven't watched that but watched "The Big Match " yesterday on ITV4 with Brian Moore commenting on Spurs v Everton a 3-3 draw with Bob Latchford (exBlues and England) scoring a last minute equaliser. It was followed by West Brom playing West Ham, different age commentator Hugh John for anyone who remembers.

Time last night to catch up on "Educating Rita" which was an education in itself. I was confused by the dockland scenes and the funny coloured buses; until I saw that it was filmed in Dublin. I was also amazed how Maureen Lipman has scarcely changed over all the years.

MOTD would improve if they dispensed with Gary Lineker. My goodness, doesn't he waffle, I came to dislike him when he got on his high chair during Alex Ferguson's boycott of the BBC, but it his cringeworthy Brown nosing with betters that send me to my law books!

For many years I have always recorded MOTD. I can then watch it without having to listen to the interminable chunterings of the experts and presenter, and the endless replays when goals are scored, as I always fast-forward at those points. I do the same with Channel Whatever It Is EFL highlights and that has the additional benefit of not having to bother with adverts which I would mute anyway if I was watching 'live'.

One thing I'm trying to avoid is the ever depressing news on TV, particularly BBC and Channel 4 who turn it into a most negative experience. Thank goodness news bulletins were more upbeat during WW2. One thing that rankles with me since last Monday is the Scotch Egg debate, and whether it constitutes a 'substantial ' meal.
I was fortunate (or unfortunate, you decide! ) to hear the first mention of this mounting phenomenon. It all began early morning on LBC Radio and the Nick Ferrari breakfast show. Robert Eustice MP was asked "does a Scotch Egg, for example, constitute a substantial meal". To which Eustice replied "I believe it would if it was table service and accompanied by a side salad".
Almost immediately our marvellous media ( I jest!) twisted this statement around , conveniently dropping the full reply, and inserting a 'full stop' after "would".
Ever since then we have been subjected to the Scotch Egg debate, principally poking fun at an innocent remark, twisted to suit the media.
What do we deduce from this?
A. The radio presenter threw the Scotch Egg suggestion forward, not the politician.
B. News media edit statements to suit their own agenda
C. Social media has a lot to answer for, very often.

Any thoughts folks?

A. With the hope of getting any sort of response that could be edited in a way that generated a controversial story. The ploy worked. In the event of a prosecution only a court could decide what constitutes a substantial meal, not a politician, no matter how elevated in rank.

B. That has long been the case but with the mass instant communication we have these days the coverage is infinitely greater.

C. Indeed it has. You only have to look at the number of people, often in prominent positions, who have made injudicious remarks on social media platforms that have got them into serious trouble. There has never been a time when instant communication was so widespread and so easily available, yet the actual communication itself is so often fatuous, untrue or trivial: sometimes all three at once. I've been online for over 20 years at home but have never felt the need to join a social media group.

Yes, watch ITV3 tonight and see the first episode of Coronation Street, simpler times, and Nick Ferrari requires the wearing of a face mask, ear plugs and an appointment with a therapist!

TLY? Is not this forum Social Media sir?
You could stretch it and say it is to a small degree especially where we post about our likes and dislikes in the non-aviation forums. Its primary purpose is as a forum for discussing aviation matters not as a means for conducting part of our private lives. As many of us choose to post under user names there isn't a horde of followers(?) eagerly awaiting to hear what we have been up to or what we intend doing or our thoughts on anything under the sun.

The thoughts of anonymous people (by and large) set out on an aviation website is surely far removed from those of identified people writing in the main for the attention for those who know them personally. In this I'm thinking of 'ordinary' individuals, not celebrities or businesses who might have other reasons.

That's my opinion and that of my wife for that matter when it comes to what I would describe as true social media sites. We are undoubtedly in a huge minority and recognise that the majority of people these days regard social media sites as part of their everyday life, and good luck to them if they enjoy it. It's just not for us.

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
