Many thanks, alphagolf and big g for the information about long haul non stop to Cancun. I must have missed the captain's comment on this so it really was a superb day all round: the visit itself; ability to use the taxiway; non-stop capability on a route that previously required a fuel stop.

I haven't looked at the TOM timetable in detail for summer 2017, Marko but I wonder whether some of the increase will be operated by non-based TOM aircraft and/or other airlines on TOM's behalf.

As the founder of Bristol Airport Spotting we were under strict instruction by the airport not to post anything about the arriving 787 to any of our spotters and friends, it was very hard to keep a secret and was leaked by another source, we wanted to alert our followers and members but simply couldnt. It was still a great day and great turn out.

Hello sierrafoxtrot. Welcome to Forums4Airports. We hope you will become a regular visitor and poster.

The Thomson thing was certainly a bit odd. A few weeks ago Mexico and Florida appeared on the Thomson web provisional timetable for summer 2017 which certainly alerted some member on this website as it did members on other aviation websites. The 788 then appeared on Mayfly only to be altered to a 757 and then at the weekend it became a 788 again (for the inbound from MAN) but a 757 for the outbound to STN.

We were aware here that Thomson and BRS were a bit miffed that the 'secret' had got out but TOM can only blame themselves for putting it on their provisional summer 2017 timetable. It was one of the worst kept secrets within the local interested aviation community with posts on the Dried Plum and elsewhere openly discussing it.

I do appreciate that your site was put it an awkward spot because you had been told something in confidence and could not reveal it but many who would have been interested knew anyway. It's a bit like the situation with the celebrity who cannot be named in England and Wales whereas the rest of the world knows the identity.

Anyway, the important thing is that the 787 came in and hopefully will be visiting BRS on revenue trips for years to come.

Thanks for the welcome. Keeping a secret in 2016 is pretty impossible with the internet, news and rumours quickly spread, as said our hands were tied but wanted to be able to let our spotters know. I was invited airside by BRS so will psot some photos in a new thread.

Big G has kindly uploaded a photo of the Thomson 787 to the gallery.

The impressive Thomson 787 sitting nicely on the BRS ramp. Is it an optical illusion or is that wing just very slightly overhanging the interstand clearway?

Please do Simon. Do I remember you being involved with that excellent BRS supporters' forum BISON that unfortunately no longer exists?

Yes I was involved, the co-founder decided to shut it down as support for the group was being given to another that appeared, after a period of time in 2013 I decided to create a new group known as BAS and it has gone from there, we are fully supported by the airport and recognised, I also organise the aviation fairs in the old terminal once a year, have you been to any? This years fair is my 3rd and will be the biggest yet. All this keeps me extremely busy!

The summer 17 schedule is out and there is a lot of TBA s - 2 x pmi, tfs, Ali, dlm, bod and ant so far. Also Cancun looks definitely non stop !!! I wonder whether CTa will happen tho given it clashes with 3 others on a Sunday morning. Could be another Marrakech

Yes it sure is overhanging, the 787 wingspan is about 7m (24ft) wider than the 767, to clear the road to the right it had to be parked off set to the centreline on stand 26. if the airport decide to keep the 787 on stand 26 (R) it will remove the use of stand 25 for the duration of the turn, but looking at the 787 on stand they may get a BMI next to it.

When the 763 with winglets parked on stand it filled the width of the Stand so stands 26,29 and 30 were designed with those in mind, I'm not sure what will happen if a second 787 were to visit At the same time.

Overall length there's not much between the 788 and 763, approx 2m (7ft) and it looks like there's enough room for a 789 to park on stand 26, but then I'm not sure what the difference in runway performance and the range from BRS, and TOM are getting the 789 in July.

Many thanks for those details big g.

I'm delighted that you've been able to maintain a website that supports BRS and its followers. I am aware of the fairs but haven't been to any yet. Although my main interest is in the economics (and politics) of civil aviation and I've never been a spotter as such, I do enjoy the ambience of airports and seeing aircraft in their 'natural' environment. When is this year's fair?

easyJet is flying to Catania again this summer at 2 x weekly although this year the route doesn't start until mid June. Whether there is also enough custom for another carrier, albeit a charter, might be open to doubt. It would be a pain if TOM axed their CTA and then easyJet decided not to operate in 2017.

Many thanks for those details big g.

This years fair is on Sunday 18th September, details of which will be advertsied on my website, last years fair saw over 450 visitors and made nearly £600 for charity so well worth attending.

450 visitors is quite something. Well done for raising that sum for charity. I do visit your website usually once or twice a week so I shall remind myself nearer the date.

my minds gone blank. must be old age. i see in the mayfly tom aircraft is doing sid. for the life of me i cant work out where sid is. can someone help me out. ty.

An excellent video of the first B 787 to land at BRS.

The video was recorded at the west end of the airfield and shows in clear detail the fence between the taxiway and public road which it was once thought would prevent aircraft of this size using the taxiway because the wings would overhang the fence. It can be seen that it's a near thing although at times the telephoto lens does give a foreshortening effect of the aircraft in respect to its position, especially towards the end of the video when it pulls onto the stand.

'Alfie' landed on the westerly runway (27) and is shown taxiing easterly to the apron.

The majority of spotters were at the west end of the airfield but on the other side of the runway - the perimeter road seen in the video loops around the western end of the runway.

Many thanks to Mraviationguy who made this super video and many others that depict life at BRS, and they can be accessed on YouTube as this video was.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
