Both Qatar Airways and Thomas Cook will lease aircraft to British Airways at Gatwick. Qatar Airways will wet lease 3 A330s and Thomas Cook will operate both short haul and long haul routes for BA from Gatwick.

BA may leave Gatwick

BA may not reopen at Gatwick once pandemic passes

The airline has told staff that it cannot rule out keeping the operation closed indefinitely.

I am very cynical here but i think that:

a) the lay off at 12,000 staff was on the cards well before coronavirus had spread around the world like it did. Okay i suspect not to the extent; but it seems to me every 10 years or so BA has a cycle of shedding the skin and coming out the other end. This is probably the final coffin for Worldwide crew and Euro Fleet - they will be offered new contracts or to go. I also find it fraud in my opinion as that is the whole point of job retention scheme. The big dig at all businesses furloughing staff by Alex was uncalled for.

B) Gatwick i suspect is something that they cannot compete against anymore and want out. Bit weird that they suddenly want out now when not long ago they were after the TC slots & previously won the ZB slots. Again just like point a, this could easily be a way of shedding them staff off. What would happen to the long haul Caribbean fleet and destinations served from LGW? All a bit iffy for me. Seems like there is no smoke without fire and it's one dodgy smelling fire and funny looking smoke coming from BA at the moment.

I personally would not be surprised if Gatwick is handed over to LEVEL Vueling or Air Europa as I'd be surprised if IAG was willing to surrender it essentially to Easyjet.
As for the long haul they could transfer it to Heathrow.

What sort of number of based units do BA have at Gatwick easyJet would be rolling around laughing no or a watered down IAG presence and Norwegian in a huge whole.

It might be that BA scrap the beach fleet entirely from Gatwick, like you say and concentrate on Heathrow. At best BA is going to come out of the present pandemic a totally different airline from what it was in March. The remaining B747-400 might well be red carded and sent to the scrappers a lot sooner than originally planned. I certainly believe as mentioned by Jerry in the above post of Level -- Air Europa - Vueling moving in for some of the routes vacated by BA. Norwegian are also a major doubt for survival after the pandemic as well due to the mountain of debt they are juggling with.

Rumours out there from Greece that the new subsidiary airline could operate routes from Gatwick to destinations such as Athens, Kos, Corfu, Mykonos and Zakinthos. But nothing has been confirmed and no flights are on sale at this moment.

I think they were are some of the old LGW routes anyway. Those that moved over to LHR this last 18 months and are very profitable (e.g. JER) will probably stay at LHR.
