Well that doesn’t say much about the Council’s legal advisors unless the two rejection reasons were knowingly kept in to see if they could sneak them through. Hopefully LCC will be more circumspect in their approach to dirty tricks if they reject the application.

The Conservative-dominated North Somerset unitary authority was decimated in the May 2019 local elections and replaced mainly by a 'rainbow council' of Greens, Lib-Dems and Independents, so the BRS planning rejection was inevitable. I posted to that effect at the time and took no pleasure in being correct.

If the LCC planning officers recommend approval of the LBA application let's hope that the councillors on the planning committee are not as idealistically opposed to their airport's development as are their counterparts in North Somerset who clearly have no concern that their actions might cost the local tax payers a lot of money. In fact, one environmental group has publicly asked the BRS owners to do the decent thing and withdraw its appeal because of the possible financial implications to the local authority there.

The 'expert' quoted in the linked newspaper report mentioned in another LBA thread today seems to believe that the LCC planning councillors will be hamstrung because of the way he believes the planning process is weighted in favour of the applicant, and thus the planning councillors will have no option but to approve the LBA planning application because a rejection could leave the local authority with a huge bill if a subsequent airport appeal is successful.

The thing that makes the
LBA application different to some others, and vital, is that it's a new terminal replacing one that soon will be 56 years old. The current terminal cannot reduce its carbon emissions. It cannot be made disability compliant. There is nowhere to install the necessary lifts or escalators. The toilets are all recently refurbished, but way too small and cramped - especially now. Baggage reclaim is woefully inadequate. So is Border Control. It struggles to cope with security requirements when the CAA demand upgrades. It doesn't have enough seating still and there isn't room to install it unless retail outlets are removed - which further reduces LBAs income at a time when they have so far lost 91.4% of their passengers year on year. They depend on retail and parking to make any money yet are under constant pressure to reduce car journeys . The runway needs resurfacing with a modern asphalt type which is a huge cost in itself - and to generate that the airport needs the terminal and passenger growth as already approved.

In a nutshell, LBA faces an uncertain future if this is rejected. A fact that GALBA will appreciate and make them even more determined, because that's what they want. LBA to go into decline. Less flights. Less passengers. Less local disruption for them.

Much as I would support Bristol's cause, they are already carrying more than twice the passengers that LBA is, and trying to grow even further. LBA is trying to grow by 75% to 7m pax by 2032 (taking account of Covid) - still behind Bristol now - but more importantly, just survive. It isn't rocket science. Every building needs to be replaced if and when it is no longer suitable. It therefore makes no sense at all for LCC to refuse it. They don't really have any grounds to do so, as the application is in accordance with Council and Government Policy, and the LBA Development Plan, which the Council approved!

Of course though, the Green Party, and certain other Councillors will refuse point blank to approve this. They will object and point the finger if blame at those who do approve it, assuming enough do to get it passed.

I really don't think most people have a clue how bad the situation could be for LBA if this is refused.

As of 1700 hrs, 1231 have signed.
That's an increase of 165 since this morning, our best day yet. And it's nowhere near finished yet!

I have forwarded the airport's email with the petition link to a lot of friends this afternoon asking them to sign, their other halves and family, friends and colleagues to do the same. I have noted done if their names on the petition as having signed.

If those on here who received it can do the same, it might further boost the figures over the Christmas holiday.

A productive day! I wish all days were like this.

It's 2306 and as I was up at 5am it's time for the land of nod.

So a final check shows 1267 signatures now, which even I, in my semi conscious state , can work out means a whopping increase of 201 signatories today. Putting that in perspective the previous 2 days totalled 37.

I don't really do social media but I wondered if local community facebook groups had been notified about the petition? I've just joined the Otley one but am not sure how to bring it to the attention of members.

We asked people who were on local groups to post information about the petition. For things like this it's best to ask for the admins approval. Otherwise it's likely to be taken off and viewed as contraversial. A friend of mine has already tried to post it in one or two Otley groups, both with the same admin, and both times it was refused. You can only try. If the admin doesn't like LBA, then permission is likely to be refused. But if you don't ask, you don't find out.

I know that the biggest Facebook Group in the City,. Leeds Place removed the petition within a day of it being posted.

Whilst we are in the festive season I wouldn't worry too much about the petition figures, well not until new year now!

Yes every signature still counts, the more the better of course. But most people just want to spend time with there families instead of been on there PC, Laptops' Ipads or mobile devices.
