Or was it a case of operating through an airport which was open and with a cargo operation and nothing to do with runway length or location. Notably, Cardiff had a couple of these PPE flights. Cardiff isn't central to the UK or Wales and Cardiff only has an extra 100m of concrete more than LBA.

in regards to CWL.. PPE freight flights will of course be going into CWL as it was organised by the Welsh government, why would they send it to any other airport? lol

Wizz are hoping to restart soon at DSA, but TUI is different, no plans yet. The airport is currently open from 6am to midnight daily, for cargo, 2Xcel & coastguard ops, plus NPAS with their fixed wing unit.

The landscape with cargo operations is very different to 25 years ago some airports now don't see cargo operations like they used to, basically to the point they don't see any cargo flights at all unfortunately LBA is in that category other airports such as Southend are seeing a bit of a resurgence. It will be interesting to see how long the spike in cargo lasts after the worst is over and normal passenger services become a bit more stable.

The PPE flights for Cardiff are orders direct from the Welsh government, my understanding is that orders ordered via NHS procurement are shipped in via LHR and then delivered to their destination by road. I don't know if Yorkshire or Leeds councils or health authorities have the ability or the finances to order directly and in bulk and fly them into a local airport like Leeds.

A lot of cargo flights are directly related to Covid 19. Others are due to the decline in passenger services that carried "belly cargo". As passenger services start up, there will be a reduction in the cargo flights.

Belly cargo will of course come back how soon and to what extent we will find out fairly soon however the medical supplies will almost certainly keep coming for a time, I would assume still on flights such as those we are seeing in to the likes of Birmingham, Cardiff, Doncaster and Heathrow at present these flights have been lined up already.

I would think the only reason DSA is open is the cargo ops! They have no commercial traffic otherwise do they?

There is the 2 Excel operation Coastguard and also the Police have a fixed wing base there now which I think operates 24 hours a day.

The PPE coming into DSA, organised by a company from Leeds that supplies the NHS, is being transferred directly to a warehouse in Rotherham.

Teeside seem to have picked up some of the cargo traffic from DSA. Must be restricted to smaller types but given they had no cargo infrastructure at all this is impressive. Can't imagine why LBA didn't act on this opportunity. MME management seem to be very pro active.

Definitely worth having then. Can't understand what Teesside has that LBA hasn't, apart perhaps from a pro active development team.

or the Mayors bottomless pit of money, keeping a white elephant open for minimal benefits.. 3 Cessna aircraft shifting abit of cargo isnt ground breaking. definitely hasn't taken anything from DSA. more hassle then its worth by the sounds of it. Don't get me wrong they seem to be trying. but the traffic just isnt there.. yes TUI adding 2 flights, Ryanair 3/4 flights, its not ground breaking stuff. I wouldn't even say a threat to NCL or LBA. They need a based operator with minimum 2 AC then they might start getting concerned.

The issue is LBA don't have the will to attract cargo operators.

It's not LBA that think it's not worth it, it's the cargo handling agents. Since the last lot packed up, nobody has been interested in taking over at LBA despite the airport making approaches to them. The new employment hub, when built, will probably provide more space, but whether that will entice them remains to be seen, particularly given the airports continued remoteness from the motorway network for distribution. It seems the likes of EMA have grabbed the lion's share of the business and what's left doesn't interest anyone enough to invest here. .

Your opinion LBAYorkie. Not what we were told at the Consultative Committee. I know cargo is something you're keen on, but unless you know for a fact that LBA management have made no attempt to attract cargo to LBA, you're treading in dangerous ground.
