It’s iconic, but holding onto it isn't practical. A new tower should ideally go on the south side by the main hangars, giving a central, clear line of sight over the whole runway and apron. The current tower is operationally limited, and its stairwell takes up valuable terminal footprint right next to Duty Free that could be far better used.

I believe South side is not viable due to the layout of the land. If you look at the aerials at the receiver site, they are pretty much right on the limit height wise whilst keeping a clear slope area nessacary each side of the runway, and from that height you can't see both ends. But cameras could when you can place them correctly.

I’ve been telling anyone who’ll listen for the last 10 years that the last physical control tower in the UK has probably been built already - the future of ATC at airports is definitely cameras, for better or worse. Even those towers that aren’t replaced soon will become hybrid operations with camera assistance.

The place for a camera mast at LBA would be on the south side imo, with a view back across the runway to the main apron, and with the sun behind it.
