Leeds Bradford Airport flying high with industry leading sustainability score
For the fourth consecutive year, Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has improved its score in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) assessment, achieving an industry leading score of 97 and receiving a 5-star rating for its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and management.
Since 2009, GRESB, an independent, international sustainability framework, has been globally benchmarking major organisations and assets on their ESG management, with sector leaders being identified as the top-performing organisations by sector, region, and nature of ownership.
Overall, LBA’s score puts it second in the United Kingdom compared to all other airports who completed the assessment.
Joselyn Rankin, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Leeds Bradford Airport commented: “I’m delighted we achieved this industry leading GRESB score and it’s great news for LBA. A 30% increase since 2021 and consistent improvement across the GRESB assessment criteria shows the investment and hard work being made by our teams in this critical area. Having committed to becoming a net zero carbon airport by 2030, the assessment allows us to develop a deeper understanding of our ESG performance and adapt to the changing needs of our customers and local community. It also presents us with an opportunity to talk to the community about the progress we are making in futureproofing our airport for 2030 and beyond.”

In line with LBA’s Net Zero Carbon Roadmap, the airport is working to minimise its environmental footprint by investing in on-site solar-powered infrastructure, establishing EV charging facilities, for both customer and operational vehicles as well as aircraft on stand, switching to electric or renewable powered vehicles and removing gas as an energy source from the terminal. In addition, the airport has reaffirmed its commitment to support West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s proposals for a parkway railway station and a mass transit system, connecting the airport to an integrated cycling, walking, bus and rail plan.
