Summer 2013

Thanks for that alphagolf.

The programme seems to be largely the same as when I checked for early summer a few weeks ago, except that additional weekly rotations have been added for Gdansk, Alicante and Bergamo since then.

Currently there are 112 weekly rotations for early summer which is four more than last year and the additional flights in August ought to mean even more seats than at that time last year.

This when Ryanair is reducing the number of based aircraft at BRS.

Looking at Mayfly now that the summer timetable has kicked in, it's noticeable that a lot of the Ryanair flights are arriving in clusters around late breakfast time (subjective I know, some people don't have breakfast until much later) and early evening now that more services are operated by non-based aircraft than based ones.

I read on another forum ryanair are being courted by cwl.Anybody heard anything or is this wishfull thinking. My view on this is i think only about 2 routes would work for them. Alicante and malaga are the ones in my view.
If that did happen then perhaps easyjet would expand in brs.
any body any thoughts on it.

Several weeks ago Sion Barry, the business editor for a South Wales group of newspapers, published one of many articles in recent months concerning the ongoing purchase of CWL by the Wales Government (WG) in which he mentioned Ryanair. He seems to be very well informed on matters relating to the WG and its relationship with CWL and comes across as a supporter of the First Minister in most of the latter's actions and words on the subject. It's been suggested more than once tongue-in-cheek that he does a good job as the FM's unofficial press officer.

Anyway, all this suggests that he does have the ear of those in power in Wales so his articles on CWL should not be dismissed lightly.

In the article mentioned above Mr Barry mentioned that the WG had been in talks with Ryanair in anticipation of the airport being acquired by the state (my italics). The airline's price was far higher than the WG was prepared to pay though talks were to continue.

A few days ago the article was effectively republished by the same newspaper group - the original emphasis had been on the airport purchase and how it would be funded - but this time the Ryanair negotiations were given more prominence hence other news outlets picking up on it. However, there is no indication that talks have progressed beyond the point described in the original article.

Obviously Ryanair has the potential to bring a large volume footfall through an airport, something airports (especially the regionals) need to feed their ancillary revenue streams such as retail and parking, but in CWL's case they would probably want the sun routes as part of any package which would almost certainly have a severely negative effect on Vueling, an airline that CWL and the WG are keen to have on board. Currently, public money is being spent by the WG on promoting Wales (and Vueling) in Catalonia.

easyJet always tells the local press how well BRS does for it (I think BRS is still the fifth largest base after LGW, MXP, LTN and STN) and there are usually suggestions about looking to new routes though from memory only Naples (summer only) and Copenhagen have appeared in the past year or two, the latter re-introduced after several years' absence.

There is no doubt that when the markets alone decide such things BRS has a considerably larger and better off catchment than CWL, and the residents of its catchment have a higher propensity to use air travel than those in Wales. However, when state aid is introduced things can be skewed although the law of unintended consequences can intrude leaving politicians with egg on their faces. Politicians' jobs don't depend on making a company a success though. They just dig a bit deeper into the money pit that the public kindly supplies.

Ryanair Timetable Summer 2013 at BRS

The Ryanair BRS summer timetable shows 115 weekly rotations, up from 108 in summer 2012.

The timetable is shown below. Those services operated by BRS-based aircraft are shown in red (total of 41) with the others (total of 74) operated by aircraft from other bases, a reflection of the recent BRS base reduction from five aircraft to two.

31 routes will be operated this summer compared with 28 in summer 2012. None of the latter has been dropped but Warsaw (started last winter), Scezecin (restarted after several years) and Chania (new route for Ryanair from Bristol, though operated in the past as a summer weekly charter flight) have been added for summer 2013.

Compared with summer 2012 Dublin has been reduced from 21 x weekly to 16 x weekly and Venice Treviso from 3 x weekly to 2 x weekly - the only negative moves - but Alicante increases from 4 to 5 x weekly, Girona from 8 to 9 x weekly, Malaga from 7 to 8 x weekly, Faro from 6 to 7 x weekly and Gdansk from 2 to 3 x weekly. In addition the new routes have Warsaw at 3 x weekly with Chania and Scezecin both 2 x weekly.

In August Alicante goes from 5 to 8 x weekly, Malaga from 8 to 9 x weekly and Faro from 7 to 8 x weekly but I've not included these in the list of daily departures shown below.

The departure list shows graphically that the much increased use of aircraft from other bases means there are relatively few Ryanair movements between 1000 and 1800. Some early/mid evenings are particularly bunched up.

On Wednesdays the two based aircraft have only five rotations between them with one being the short Knock route.

Mol has a press conference at brs today.
roumer has it that base will grow to 10 aircrafts based in brs.
ifr thats true then lots more routes to be announced.wait with interest on this one.

I think it's meant to be BTS, as in Bratislava rather than BRS according to Austrianaviation.net

From 5 to 2 to 10 think thats a bit odd. However this is ryanair. If they stook at five this summer then i could very much believe an extra base per summer for the next five years.

From 5 to 2 to 10 think thats a bit odd. However this is ryanair. If they stook at five this summer then i could very much believe an extra base per summer for the next five years.

The persistent rumours were/are that BRS and FR could not agree over peak time charges though there is also a suggestion that overnight parking charges might also have been an issue.

The downsizing of the base has never been officially announced either by the airline or the airport. It just went ahead and happened.

Normally when Ryanair downsizes a base it makes a great public fuss saying the airport concerned is being greedy and that the region will lose x millions in money because of it.

That Ryanair has said nothing publicly suggests it has gone along with the idea, presumably because it's making as much money (the number of flights this summer is up on last) and/or it realises there is no viable alternative for South West Britain.

Exeter's catchment is far too small for a substantial Ryanair operation and Cardiff, also markedly smaller in catchment size both in numbers and economic make-up, would only be likely to be viable if the new Wales Government owners gave Ryanair a huge amount of cash to operate there. Even then the routes would be relatively limited because of the catchment.

Press reports in recent months suggest that the Wales Government and Ryanair have been in talks but the latter's demands were much too high for the WG. Talks are reportedly continuing so it remains to be seen if they lead to anything concrete. The snag for CWL is that a Ryanair operation would cut across Vueling which is beginning to build up a summer sun route network.

[textarea]Bristol Airport scores with Szczecin

On Tuesday 30 April 2013, Ryanair commenced a new route to Szczecin in Poland from Bristol Airport. Passengers on the first flight were welcomed at check-in with an eye-catching word search board linking Bristol Airport, Ryanair and Szczecin.

The introduction of this new route brings the number of Polish destinations served from Bristol Airport to nine, with a total of 23 departing flights each week. This is the largest number of direct Polish routes operated by Ryanair from any British airport outside London.

Szczecin is an energetic and enthralling city where the River Oder flows into the Baltic Sea. Today it is the capital of the province, Western Pomerania, and is full of unique character and charm. It is the country's seventh-largest city and is a major seaport with a strong maritime industry, with a busy port and repair shipyard. It is situated near the border between Germany and Poland.

Szczecin is not the only new Ryanair route starting from Bristol Airport this summer. On Saturday 27 April a new flight to Chania, Crete commenced. This Mediterranean island is famed for its mountainous landscapes and laidback atmosphere. Rich in history, including the ruins of the Minoan palace of Knossos, but with lively nightlife, Crete offers the best of ancient and modern cultures.

Shaun Browne, Bristol Airport’s Aviation Director said:
“We are delighted with these two new destinations. This brings the total number of Ryanair destinations for summer 2013 from Bristol to 32. The range of destinations will suit both the leisure and business traveller.

“The growth in services between Bristol Airport and Poland demonstrates the strength of the cultural and business links the country has with the South West and Wales. Szczecin in particular, has similarities with Bristol as a centre for the service industry and maritime business in Poland.”[/textarea]

Ryanair previously operated Bristol-Szczecin in 2008 and 2009.

BRS - DUB Winter 2013/2014

I completed a test booking in November and it shows Ryanair operating 2 x Daily Sat to Thu and 3 x Daily on Fridays.

After November the timetable appears to be 2 x daily (14 weekly), the same as last winter.

Winter 2013-2014 BRS-DUB

Ryanair has increased BRS-DUB to 20 x weekly (3 x daily except Sat which is 2 x daily), apparently in response to Aer Lingus Regional increasing its BRS-DUB to 19 x weekly this winter (3 x daily M-F, 2 x daily Sat-Sun).

This sort of thing has been happening quite regularly over the past two or three years at BRS. EIR will increase frequencies then FR responds by increasing its own, only to reduce after a year or so which then encourages EIR to increase frequencies again for FR to respond again with increases of its own.

39 weekly flights will be a complete overkill in winter.

EIR has so far shown the DUB route at 14 x weekly ( 2 x daily) for next summer, a reduction on its winter schedule and on this summer. This was in place before the Ryanair move to increase its own winter offering.

What's the betting that if EIR stays at 14 x weekly next summer FR will drop back to the 16 x weekly of this summer?

Bristol-Beziers

It appears that this route has been axed for the coming winter - it's been in continuous operation since 2008.

There is no booking availability on the FR web booking engine for Beziers to Manchester or Edinburgh this winter either, only to Luton in the UK.

FR can be extremely late in putting in (and taking out) routes of course but it would seem to be cutting it extremely fine for such a move now.

Two or three years ago a twinning association was formed between the large village of Wrington (BRS is in its parish) and Villeneuve-les-Beziers on the back of this route, and there have been a number of exchanges between local council representatives and other locals from both ends.

The Wrington Parish Council was one of the prime movers of the twinning, which I though was a bit rich bearing in mind its opposition to BRS expansion. If the route does not return next summer they might have problem with the twinning.

Winter 2013-2014

Less than a month until the winter timetable commences so I thought I'd take a quick peek at how things look, with the permanent caveat that FR timetables can never be taken as read until the rather large soprano exercises her vocal cords, and often not even then.

At the moment (on the dates I checked in January and March) there is a total of 59 weekly rotations, about eight more than last winter.

This winter there are 16 destinations compared with 18 last winter - Beziers and Knock will not operate and Girona replaces Reus.

The 16 are: Alicante, Budapest, Dublin, Faro, Gdansk, Girona, Gran Canaria, Katowice, Kaunas, Lanzarote, Malaga, Malta, Poznan, Tenerife, Warsaw Modlin and Wroclaw.

The additional flights this winter are largely due to the Dublin route which is showing 20 weekly (3 x daily except Sat which is 2 x daily) whereas last winter it was 14, with extra rotations on Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Malaga, Budapest and Malta.

summer 2014

Is there any talk of fr doing the same as s2013, as in doing the programe mostly with non based aircrafts.

It would be nice to see some frequency increases and new routes particularly greece. Any idea when they release next summers routes?

I'd actually expected a reduction in overall flights this winter given that Ryanair is supposedly reducing its network/frequencies through the dark months because of its scaled down profits expectations.

I wasn't anticipating new routes this winter but we may get one or two next summer as we did with Chania in summer 2013.

I'm not sure about summer 2014 release dates. I'll do some sniffing around.

Is there any talk of fr doing the same as s2013, as in doing the programe mostly with non based aircrafts.

Do you mean for this winter? I haven't checked the timings in detail but it's likely that two based aircraft will be assisted by units from other bases.

In fact, in recent winters although BRS nominally had five based aircraft there was never a day when more than three were needed and on some days only two.

As for next summer, I don't know.

Summer 2013 saw more flights than the previous summer even though the base was reduced from five to two aircraft. Some of the timings may have proved less popular to some passengers although there was no evidence of shrinking loads, but the plus side for the airport (and indirectly for passengers as it eased the overcrowding at peak times) was that arrivals and departures were more evenly spread throughout the day with Ryanair largely missing the morning, lunchtime and teatime peaks. On Saturdays, for example, there were seven FR arrivals between 1940 and 2040 this summer.

Some flights for summet 2014 are available now - dublin alicante malaga palma and thr canaries

Winter 2013-2014

I've had a more detailed look at the current Ryanair timetable - it could still alter a bit even this close to the start of the winter season as is the way with Ryanair.

For most of the winter there seem to be 57 weekly rotations - the 59 I mentioned in a previous post appear to operate only around the Christmas/New Year period.

Timings suggest that 39 rotations are operated by BRS-based aircraft with 18 from other bases. The winter 2012-2013 weekly rotations were 42 and 9 respectively, giving a total of 51.

Perhaps surprisingly Monday with five rotations and Friday with six rotations are the quietest days.

The five Monday rotations consist of Poznan, Wroclaw and 3 x Dublin all operated by BRS-based units, and the six rotations on Fridays are Poznan, Wroclaw, Alicante and 3 x Dublin again all operated by BRS-based aircraft.

The busiest days are Tuesday and Sunday, both with 11 rotations.

The 11 Tuesday rotations are Katowice, Malaga, Malta, Warsaw Modlin, Lanzarote, Tenerife South, Faro, Budapest and 3 x Dublin with six by BRS-based units and five by visitors.

The 11 Sunday rotations are Malaga, Gdansk, Girona, Malta, Warsaw Modlin, Kaunas, Tenerife South, Alicante and 3 x Dublin, with again BRS-based units operating six and visitors five.

Wednesday sees seven rotations, Saturday eight and Thursday nine.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
