There are definitely only 30 routes so far published for summer 2017 with only two of them being new routes - if we accept that Bucharest and Venice Marco Polo are new routes. If the video is correct there is one more to be announced although in its press release today Ryanair mentions only 30 routes with the two mentioned above said to be new.

Summer 2017

It looks as though Ryanair has been doing a bit more infilling with frequencies.

I make the current situation for the main part of the summer this in terms of weekly rotations per week compared with summer 2016:

May 2017 113 weekly rotations, the same as May 2016

June 2017 112 weekly rotations, 7 fewer than June 2016

July 2017 118 weekly rotations, 2 fewer than July 2016

August 2017 129 weekly rotations, 3 fewer than August 2016

September 2017 119 weekly rotations, 1 more than September 2016

Most of the deficiencies relate to sun destinations and I would expect a bit more infilling with some of them, especially as this does not add up to the 5% increase that Ryanair has been talking about.

I notice that the 'new for summer 2017' route to Bucharest launched yesterday. There is a video on Twitter about it but I couldn't tell how full the flight may have been

New route. - zadar Starting next summer. At last a new route !!!

Welcome news. Interestingly, about four/five years ago Ryanair put a summer programme 'into the system' with timings and flight numbers (that would have meant a sixth based aircraft at BRS) and Zadar was one of the destinations featured. Eventually, the airport decided the time was not ripe for such expansion and binned the idea.

Biarritz was another of the proposed routes (easyJet tried Biarritz in 2008 and 2009) as was Rhodes - BRS has only ever had charter services to Rhodes. I can't remember the others but they were already served from BRS either by easyJet or by the charter airlines.

I note a third weekly Kaunas flight this summer has just been released

I've just tried 3 different dates and at least one leg is completely sold out. I flew to KUN last year and was amazed that the flight was so busy. It seems to be a very successful route and I've been surprised it's only been twice a week for so long.

I don't know why they chose Kaunas instead of Vilnius but Ryanair seem to be doing ok with the route

All the Ryanair Eastern European routes from BRS are extremely busy in summer, slightly less so in some of the winter months.

Kaunas monthly load factors in summer 2015 (May-Sept inclusive) were in, chronological order:
92%, 97%, 99%, 99%, 91%

In the same months in 2016 the load factors were: 95%, 98%, 99%, 98%, 93%

Looking at Ryanair's Polish routes (Gdansk, Poznan, Wroclaw, Rzeszow and Warsaw Modlin) the load factors were consistently high in the past two summers (and in previous summers). The lowest load factor for any summer month for the Polish routes in 2015 and 2016 was 92% (Wroclaw in July 2016); nearly everything else was 95% or higher with the great majority being in the 97%-99% bracket. Even when Wizz started Warsaw Chopin against Ryanair's Warsaw Modlin Ryanair's load factors were not affected, and Wizz saw load factors itself of 96% in July and August last year and high 80s% in the rest of the summer. Can't establish Krakow as it competes with easyJet.

Budapest sees similarly high load factors. So did Bratislava until it was axed a few years ago which shows that extremely high load factors don't guarantee a route's survival.

If Brexit hits hard it will undoubtedly affect all this, and not in a positive way.

Summer 2017

The last time I had a count-up this was the total number of weekly rotations each summer month. I've put the corresponding numbers for 2016 in brackets. I've included the recent Kaunas increase.

May 116 (113)
June 115 (119)
July 121 (120)
August 131 (132)
September 121 (118)

There are 31 routes this coming summer against 29 in summer 2016 with Bucharest and Zadar being new - all the 2016 routes operate in 2017.

Broadly, the decreases are on some of the sun routes although DUB is down on average one rotation per week most months, typically 20 to 19. There are increases on routes such as Venice MP and Warsaw Modlin; these routes are in competition with other airlines so Ryanair might be trying to put pressure on.

As in previous years the schedule is gradually being increased from that originally published last autumn. Ryanair spoke about a 5% increase at BRS this summer. If that is the case there will be further additions to frequencies (probably on the sun routes if past history is a guide) unless a new route or two is/are announced.

Addendum

I've re-checked the Ryanair booking engine and the above is the situation as of today (7 February 2017)

Press release now on Ryanair website:

http://corporate.ryanair.com/news/n...l-winter-route-to-cologne-launched/?market=en

A Ryanair spokesman said a year or so ago that they would be looking to introduce German destinations from BRS. I thought this had gone by the board with the Brexit fallout. Today's announcement is good news, if unexpected.

This will be the airport's sixth German route:

Berlin Schoenfeld (easyJet)
Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Munich and Frankfurt (all bmi regional)

Great news. I want to see Ryanair increasing their offering from BRS especially to Germany (and Scandinavia) but I wonder how this might effect the BMI route to Düsseldorf? The two airports are only 35 minutes by car apart. If the Ryanair flights are half the price of BMI, might people be tempted to fly to a slightly further away airport to save money I wonder?

Interesting, since it's within spitting distance of Düsseldorf. Wonder what this means for the bmi route, or maybe it doesn't compete because bmi to Düsseldorf and Frankfurt serves the business market with high frequency and Cologne serves the VFF market.

Ryanair will be 4 x weekly (no timings or days of operation issued yet so far as I'm aware) whilst bmir operates 6 days a week with a couple of days double daily.

I know that bmir is expensive but these fares seem to enable it to live on load factors across the airline between 50% and 60%. I hope it can still survive on DUS against Ryanair's CGN. tpm makes an arguable point that hopefully will be proved correct. bmir seems to do all right against easyJet on Paris Cdg.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
