Also note that the article states that the expansion work on the airport will start next spring. Great news that we appear to be a bit closer to getting a start date for this work but this is going to cause chaos in the summer! Good luck to all the staff!

Full statistical update figures now on official LBIA website. No mention though of start date on Terminal extension.

Think they are stretching it with strong demand on the domestic routes - as an example for July Aberdeen was well down.

I totally agree. Our domestic network isnt "great" and they do "okay", i would not describe them with "strong demand". Surely that term would indicate around 85% plus load factors, which they do not have.

OK get the flags and trumpets out!!!

August up 9.5% to 359,508. Rolling year now 2,620,724.

Selected highlights
Best route in % terms was Malta, up 269% to 3108.
Best route in terms of volume was Palma at 32,048, up 19% on last year
Interesting stat - BRU + EDI + GLA = 3305. Knock managed 3495!!!

So more to Knock than Malta? Some were saying Knock would be due for the chop by Ryanair, yet these figures and the fact they are operating it all year round would suggest those forecasts were somewhat wide of the mark?

I think the problem with the 3 BMi routes is that August is traditionally a quiet time for business passengers, which form the vast majority of passengers on these routes ( I suspect)

Maybe with these figures, we just climbed a place?

All the provisional CAA figures for August 2010 now seem to be in and the 'league table' for the top 20 UK airports based on the rolling 12-monthly passengers figures until the end of August is as follows:

1. Heathrow 65,190,624

2. Gatwick 31,572,733

3. Stansted 18,947,074

4. Manchester 17,628,249

5. Luton 8,710,117

6. Edinburgh 8,678,655

7. Birmingham 8,664,244

8. Glasgow 6,683,769

9. Bristol 5,747,253

10. Liverpool 5,056,557

11. Newcastle 4,392,524

12. East Midlands 4,251,725

13. Belfast Int 4,100,871

14. London City 2,828,381

15. Aberdeen 2,814,569

16. Belfast City 2,813,820

17. Leeds-Bradford 2,620,724

18. Southampton 1,761,953

19. Prestwick 1,694,834

20. Cardiff 1,448,863

However, based on the August 2010 passenger numbers alone the table shows some positional changes.

1. Heathrow 6,542,699

2. Gatwick 3,692,946

3. Manchester 2,090,355

4. Stansted 2,089,451

5. Luton 978,958

6. Birmingham 965,008

7. Edinburgh 927,212

8. Bristol 686,271

9. Glasgow 646,379

10. Liverpool556,295

11. East Midlands 553,099

12. Newcastle 526,650

13. Belfast Int 454,071

14. Leeds-Bradford 359,508

15. Belfast City 277,834

16. Aberdeen 258,436

17. London City 226,014

18. Prestwick 192,326

19. Southampton 183,455

20. Cardiff 177,107

In summary, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Belfast City and Prestwick each rose one place based on August figures alone whilst LBA rose 3 places.

Stansted, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Aberdeen and Southampton dropped one place whilst London City dropped three places.

It would seem that if LBA maintains its present 'push' (to retain the football analogy) it should soon be climbing the 12-monthly table with one or two other 'teams' clearly in sight.

I love the way you compare the football league with the airport league. It makes it much more fun. It's just how enthusiasts view their local airport though.

I you remember my posts regarding passenger reductions during the last winter period I mentioned that Jet2 reduces it's flights significantly more than other airlines to ensure it's losses are kept to a minimum. Where as on the whole Ryanair seems to maintain it's flights through the winter, so for this reason the LBA passenger numbers should be significantly higher this winter compared with last winter.

Aviador,

I've gone the whole hog now.

In the Skytalk/Skybar General Discussions board I've put the top 37 UK airports into four league tables along the lines of the Premier League, The Championship and Leagues One and Two in England and asked for opinions as to which 'teams' (airports) will be promoted or relegated in the near and longer term future.

Let's see if there are any takers.[/offtopic]

September 2010 CAA stats

LBA handled 315,324 passengers in the month, up 8.8% on September 2009. Atms were up 8.7%.

Rolling 12-month total was 2,646,168, up 1.5% on a year ago.

For comparison purposes:

MAN - down 1.9%
NCL - down 2.7%
DTV - down 15.8%
HUY - down 13.6%
DSA - up 19.1%

CAA stats now available.

LBA - Up 16.5% to 270,768
Rolling total 2684205 up 4.4% for the year

Highest route total was Malaga at 22810 (Up 75%)
Highest increase was Pisa (up 719.2%)

Very good news indeed and very encouraging given the continuing recession. Not many airports are likely to have such good figures and with yet more possible route expansion to be announced.

I've been geeking out a bit. Here's what the current year is looking like compared to every year back to 2003, (seemed like a good starting point as Jet2 arrived that year).

Monthly pax on the vertical axis:

So, in 2009/10 LBA had a terrible winter leading into its best ever summer and autumn. Had it not been for the poor winter, this might have been the year when LBA beat the 3m pax mark. Given a decent winter 2010/11, LBA should be doing north of 3m in the Year-To-Date figures by the spring!

Thanks for posting that radar! I would go along with what you say and the November stats will give us a good indication as to how the winter will pan out, not forgetting that November will probably be the worst month passenger wise through the winter as the ski flights are still yet to start.

Well, going by previous years, it's generally slightly busier in November than December, bottoms out in January and then recovers a bit in February. All four months are fairly close so, like you say, November should give us an idea of what kind of a winter it will be. 170000 would be in the ballpark of previous good years.

I've been thinking about this. Whilst LBA is certainly on course to climb a few places in the 'league' (Aberdeen, London City and Belfast City are all very definitely in its sights), it isn't possible to judge this on a single month's figures. It would be ok if all airports had similar distributions of passengers throughout the year to each other, but they don't. While LBA was beating the above airports in August, they all have a fairly even distribution of passengers across the year, whereas LBA's figures drop very sharply in the winter, and soar in the summer. This is a reflection of the different passenger profiles that airports have, and the only way to properly compare airports is by 12-month figures.

August is LBA's busiest month. Conversely, passenger numbers actually drop in August at London City and Aberdeen, reflecting the fact that their usual clientele, the business man and oil worker respectively, are away with their families on their summer holidays from other airports and not flying for business. As you can see, Liverpool, East Mids, Aldergrove and Newcastle have similar patterns to LBA:

Interesting stuff there Radar! It was said in a YEP article earlier in the year that the airport expects to be handling around 3.2 million passengers by March of 2011. Looking ahead I would imagine the winter figures will show significant increases over previous years, largely because of Ryanair and I suppose PIA to an extent. Do people think this is achievable?

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
