CAA Provisional Statistics Update

Maybe Heather can remember, LBA used to have more Scheduled flights than Luton and was about number 11 in the UK airport rankings, certainly above Liverpool.

Yes wawkrk, I am old enough to remember! In fact I remember when LBA and NCL had similar passenger numbers, and we were way above LPL and there was even talk of closing the latter until it was bought by Peel and Easyjet moved in.

I think we might just scrape 3m pax this financial year as we have already had over 2m during the period April to October and October's passenger figures were over 16.5% up on last years. If that trend continues, we could hit 3m by the end of March

In 1986 LBA handled 510,000 passengers compared with Liverpool's 251,000.

Even Stansted handled only 546,000 in 1986.

Newcastle handled 1.25 million in 1986.

I remember that post Local Yokel. The days when LBA and NCL were more equal was way back in the 60's and Newcastle was known as 'Woolsington'! I have no idea of the figures then but LBA was quite busy for a small airport and we had 5 or 6 BKS (later Northeast Airlines then to become British Airways) Viscounts based and maintained here. NCL had a couple of Tridents of the same carrier based there, but it wasn't long before their long runway started to make a huge difference. We didn't get our extension until 1984 by which time LBA was lagging way behind most other similar airports, apart from LPL.

The November stats should be out in a couple of days. We'll get the first indications of how Ryanair is performing during the winter season.

According to the CCA website they are due tomorrow (14th), but don't forget, LBA are rarely in the first release. I think we will see around 25-30% increase to around 175 000. I hope I am not too optimistic.

A touch optimistic there Seasider but a good figure nevertheless. Could have been significantly better had we not had the last week of November ruined by snow.

I had forgottem about the "snow effect" and obviously Ryanair haven't carried as many passengers on their extra 3 services/day as I had expected.
The figures were in the first release which is unusual for LBA.

It's looking like there's going to be little growth this summer over last summer the way things are going. The Ryanair influence on the CAA stats will disappear off the year on year growth come March.

I would think any growth at all is to be regarded as a success after the year the aviation industry has just had. Most airports will have seen a reduction, courtesy of the snow and a certain volcano in Iceland - not forgetting the economic downturn.

I would imagine that April/May figures will show an increase over last year (assuming we don't get another ash cloud). Time will tell.

December 2010

CAA provisional stats now published for December and, although because of the weather they will be a little skewed as the stats will be for most airports this month, they make very satisfactory reading for LBA.

139,058 passengers were handled in the month, up 14.3% on December 2009 and, as atms were up by only 5.2%, it seems that loads were higher across the board.

The provisional annual figure for 2010 is 2,724,224 which is an increase of 6.7% on 2009. During the year as a whole atms were up by 2.8% which again is a good sign relative to the passenger numbers increase.

LBA was the best performing UK airport in 2010 with its 6.7% rise in passenger numbers.

Considering the weather that is a very good performance.

I am going to be brave (or foolish) and predict passenger figures will rise above 3m in 2011.

Thanks Local Yokel. That is a really good bit of news for LBA and its supporters. In such difficult circumstances as the aviation industry has had this year, all I can say is that is a very encouraging year for the airport and the airlines using it.

To put the figures in context, other performances in December are as follows:

Doncaster - Down 1%
Manchester - Up 1.9%
Newcastle - Down 6%
Liverpool - Down 15.9%

We are now just 16,160 behind Belfast City on the running year total, only 39,459 behind Aberdeen and only 56,358 behind London City. 3 places waiting to be jumped over the next few months hopefully.

Excellent figures again. Lets hope the airport can at least maintain these numbers during the economic physical squeeze.

The provisional stats are now out for January. Really strong numbers for LBA which is great news.

LBA = 140,168 (up 32.7%) - rolling year now up to 2,758,378 (up 8.9%).

Should be moving up the league with a few more months like this.

The FR impact is coming through strongly now. Jan 2010 was cold and snowy from memory so thay might be having an impact.

January 2011

Some sensational figures for LBA in January even though January 2010 was affected by bad weather.

January 2011 saw 140,168 passengers handled, up a massive 32.7% on January 2010.
Atms for the month were up by 21.4% so the passenger figures improved half as much again in terms of the additional flights.

Rolling 12-month period saw 2,758,378 passengers handled, up 8.9% on a year ago.

I posted figures elsewhere showing how well LBA had done vis-a-vis most other UK airports in the recession, and on these figures it looks as though 2011 will see the airport continue on its merry way. 3 mppa at year's end has got to be well in range now.

Hi all, been watching this board for a long time now...

Just a note to remember how much the adverse weather we suffer affects the passenger figures on a year on year basis.
As rightly said Jan 2010 suffered massive weather disruption (Feb also did too) but if a passenger doesnt actually fly then they don't count as a departing pasenger on the statistics. So these passengers may have been there last year, been through the airport, spent money in the shops, but ended up on a cancelled flight or a bus to another airport.

This does make the year on year comparisons a little cloudy to say the least!
