Bristol Airport has published its own passengers stats for April 2014

Total Pax: 503,055 UP: 4.14%
Movements: 5,250 DOWN: 2.00%

As always there will be difference when the official CAA stats are published, which will probably be next week as Bristol was not in the first set of airports reporting today.

A good set of figures from what I can see:

Charter Pax: UP 17.81%
Sched Domestic Pax: UP 3.64%
Sched International Pax: UP 0.83%

About as expected given the later Easter this year and the fact that there didn't seem to be many more seats on offer each week than in April last year.

The CAA stats will probably show slightly more than 503K which will make it BRS's best ever April. 2008 was the previous best when over 491,000 were handled.

I'm not expecting a lot of growth this year. A sample of a week in May shows only about one per cent more seats available than the same week last year. Ryanair have cut back a bit and some of easyJet's seasonal routes seem to have started a week later in May this year.

The monthly percentage rises in 2013 beginning with January were: -1.8; -0.7; +5; -0.7; + 8.1; +3.8; +3.6; +4.7; +4.2; +4.7; +5.2; +3.4 with the year as a whole seeing 3.5% growth.

The first three months of this year have seen: +9.6; +3.9; -0.2.

It seems that much of any growth this year from now on will have to come from increased loads so May might give an indication of the rest of the summer.

CAA stats now published for April 2014 as follows:

507,213 up 4.1% on April 2013 with atms down 1.9%. Rolling 12-month total 6,187,631 up 4.5% on a year ago.

The drop in atms is broadly in line with the lack of any real increase in available seats in April with May also in a similar position. It suggests higher loads across the board, always a positive thing, which is something that's been occurring year after year (except in 2009) for many years at the airport.

CAA Stats for May 2014 as follows:-

Passengers:-
May 2014 = 615,718 UP: 4.4%
Rolling 12mths = 6,213,686 UP: 4.1%

12 months figure is now very close to the all time high in 2008.

Movements:-
May 2014 = 5,092 DOWN: 1.4%
Rolling 12mths = 53,890 UP: 5.8%

Increase in passenger number against a fall in movements in May provide further evidence that growth is coming from improving load factors and not increased ops.
Will be interesting if this is repeated in the remaining summer months, but a good set of results again for Bristol, I was doubtful that it would maintain the increase in passengers numbers with the major playing operating less rotations this year compared to 2013. :good:

A good set of figures there. What was the 2007 record and more importantly, can it realistically be beaten this year?

Ray, got my year wrong it was 2008.....

The record in a 12mth period was 6,226,769, do I think this can be beaten.........on current performance I would suggest it is a Yes. But who knows what external forces may have on future growth this year.

alphagolf

one thing we must not forget about the figures is that t/cook replaced 2 a320 with 2 a321 aircraft. also easy have 2 extra a320 aircraft this summer against 3 a320 last summer, so in my book that will make quite a big impact on pax figs.

That's very close, only 13k in it. As said above with the extra seats from the likes of Thomas Cook and Easyjet hopefully Bristol can be looking forward to a record year.

May 2014

Like alphagolf I wasn't expecting a rise of over 4%. I was looking at perhaps 1-2% having regard to the fact that Ryanair has cut back a bit and the TOM long haul has gone. Against this, as has been said, TCX has larger aircraft and easyJet has more 320s than last summer.

This is the best ever May with the previous one being May 2008 when just under 592,000 passengers were handled.

June needs a rise of around 2.5% to take the rolling 12-month figure ahead of that best ever calendar year of 2008 - incidentally, I make the best ever 12-month period October 2007-October 2008 when the airport handled over 6,326,000 passengers.

Apart from last year when the Airbus corporate shuttle led to a rise in annual air transport movements, BRS has seen its passenger growth over the last four years achieved against falling atm numbers.

It's good in the sense that larger aircraft and better loads have been the reason but there needs to be a rise in atms if continued progress is to be made.

June needs a rise of around 2.5% to take the rolling 12-month figure ahead of that best ever calendar year of 2008..................

And it got it. CAA stats show that 653,151 passengers passed through the terminal in June, a rise of 3.4% on June 2013. This is the best June ever and is continuing the trend of last summer and the early part of this summer with each succeeding month being a record breaker.

Rolling 12-month total was 6,234,596, up 4.1% on a year ago.

Returning to June, the 3.4% rise was achieved against a drop of 2.7% in atms. Mayfly showed that there were about the same number of seats per week compared with June 2013 although July appears to be down nearly 2,000 seats per week, with reduced atm numbers also a continuing trend and something that we've highlighted before. Growth can't continue indefinitely with falling atms because a point will be reached where every flight is going out full. It's already beginning to happen with easyJet on some routes, notably Paris Cdg.

Thomson have already announced an increased programme for summer 2015. Let's hope that other airlines do the same.

CAA stats July 2014

696,249 passengers handled in July, up 2.7% on July 2013. Atms were down 3.7%. Rolling 12-month figure 6,252,621, up 4% on a year ago.

It's the best July ever and the pattern of the past 15 months or so with record months following one after another against reductions in atms continues.

Record day at Bristol Airport

News Release (21/08/14)

Bristol Airport

Over 25,000 passengers pass through terminal in 24 hours

Bristol Airport recorded another major milestone last week (Thursday 14 August), experiencing its busiest ever day with a total of 25,390 passengers passing through the terminal in 24 hours. This landmark follows record passenger numbers in the months of June (646,000*) and July (690,500*), up 3.34 per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively compared to the same periods in 2013.

A number of factors have contributed to increased passenger numbers including the introduction of a larger aircraft on KLM’s four times daily service between Bristol and Amsterdam, and high load factors on other charter and scheduled flights during the peak holiday season. June also saw the launch of a summer service between Bristol and Stockholm, operated by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), while tour operator, Just Sunshine, launched an additional Tunisia flight, further extending the choice of products and destinations available to holidaymakers from the South West and Wales.

Shaun Browne, Aviation Director at Bristol Airport, said:
“Milestones like this demonstrate that passengers are increasingly choosing the convenience of flying from their regional airport when the flights and holidays they want become available.

“By working with airlines and tour operators to extend the choice of products and destinations they offer from Bristol we hope to further reduce the need for passengers to fly from airports outside the South West. Looking ahead to 2015, we are well progressed with potential new route opportunities and expect further developments in the coming weeks.”

It has been a busy summer in more ways than one with the recently opened central walkway completed ahead of the busy summer holiday period to meet passenger and airline demand. This will be followed by the construction of an eastern terminal extension, commencing in September. The £8.6m project – the first major expansion of the terminal building since it opened in 2000 - will be finished in summer 2015.

Wonder what the new route opportunities are that could be in the next few weeks........

Wonder what the new route opportunities are that could be in the next few weeks........

Probably the wrong thread to go into too much detail but both easyJet and Ryanair have largely stagnated in recent years, other than more 320s with easyJet although seat numbers are still only on a par with 2008 when the airline had 12 A319s based in peak summer.

There is still speculation that Ryanair may increase its presence at CWL next summer. If it does it remains to be seen if this will in any way adversely impact BRS.

The numbers are up this year most months against fewer monthly atms, a trend going back several years, which is probably a good thing for the airlines as it suggests higher loads and larger aircraft, ergo the potential for higher fares.

The time must be soon with us when the continual rise in annual passenger numbers can only be achieved with increased number of atms. It seems there will be a third based TUI unit for most of next summer (although it may not be one of TUI's own) which will help.

I can't see any of the MEB3 at BRS for a long time so Turkish to Istanbul would be a pleasant addition and of potential considerable business use with its onward flights.

One thing is certain though. If next year does see yet more passenger growth the terminal extension will be sorely needed.

Good news about the record day by the way.

Addendum

Looking at Mayfly's seat totals the average load factor for the record day would have been just over 90% across all airlines.

August 2014

There was an item on the ITV local teatime news programme today that featured a short interview with Shaun Browne, the airport's route director.

He said that the airport has been seeing 25,000 people a day through the terminal recently and that August was heading towards a record month beating last August's then record of nearly 708,000 (CAA stats - the airport's own figures are usually a few thousand fewer because of the different methodology employed in collecting the figures, no under 2s counted in BRS's own figuresfor example).

He confirmed that 2014 is likely to see around 6.3 million passengers which will be a record. The previous record year was 2008 when the airport saw 6.229 million.

Bristol Business News is reporting another record breaking month at Bristol Aiport in August.

It is reporting some 723,000 passengers used the airport in August with a record of 25,390 passing through the airport terminal on August 15th.

Also reported that September has already started strongly due to the Nato summit with the VIP passing through.

I would guess we could be looking at another record being broken in September too.

More records set at Bristol Airport as passengers jet off on summer holidays

September 10, 2014
By Robert Buckland

Bristol Airport continued to break its own passenger number records in August by achieving another best-ever monthly total and recording the busiest day in its history.

Some 723,000 people used the airport last month as the holiday getaway season reached its peak. On one day alone – August 14 – some 25,390 passed through the terminal in 24 hours, the largest number since it opened in 1957.

Earlier in the summer the airport achieved record-breaking figures for June and July, with growth of 3.2% over the two months continuing its rapid return to pre-recession passenger numbers.

September has already started strongly, with arrivals boosted by VIP attending last week’s NATO Summit in Newport.

As a result, the annual total for 2014 is expected to exceed the previous high of 6.2m achieved in 2008.

Growth has been driven by the introduction of larger aircraft on existing services, high load factors during the holiday season, and the launch of routes to new destinations. KLM increased capacity on its four-times daily Amsterdam service by 205, easyJet operated an 11th Bristol-based aircraft throughout summer, and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) started a seasonal service to Stockholm.

Bristol Airport aviation director Shaun Browne said: “It is encouraging to see that when we offer the right frequencies and destinations, passengers will choose to fly from their regional airport.

“Reducing the number of passengers from the South West using airports outside the region is key objective for us, and these figures suggest we are heading in the right direction.”

Meanwhile, budget airline Ryanair has said it will increase frequency on its Bristol-Budapest service next summer from two to three times a week. The Irish airline flies to 28 destinations from Bristol and last year handled 1.2m passengers at the airport.

More on this story follows later . . .

Good news for BRS :s_thumbsup looks very much like it will be record year for them... Let’s hope they can build on this in 2015...

Has anyone heard anything more about potential new routes for next year...

Haven't heard anything yet, but World Routes takes place in the US later this month so I wouldn't be surprised if we get some route news then.....

Has anyone heard anything more about potential new routes for next year...

When talking about the record day for passenger numbers a few weeks ago airport aviation director Shaun Browne said, "Looking ahead to 2015, we are well progressed with potential new route opportunities and expect further developments in the coming weeks."

I received a similar comment in an email reply from the airport to my query about the new terminal development.

September seems to have started well but looking at next week's Mayfly, there seems to be around 2% fewer seats available across the board compared with the same week last year.

2014 will be a record year for passenger numbers unless something cataclysmic occurs during the autumn/early winter.

CAA stats August 2014

CAA stats are now published and as usual show higher numbers than BRS's own figures - for the reasons set out in previous posts in this thread.

730,345 passengers passed through the terminal in August, up 3.2% on August 2013. The trend of the last few years of decreasing atms versus increasing passengers numbers continues with atms in August down 2.7%.

Rolling 12-month figure was 6,274,791, up 3.8% on a year ago.

This is the third time in BRS's history that 700,000 passengers have been exceeded in a month. 2008 (the record annual year so far although 2014 will almost certainly top it) saw 705,000 in August last year and last August saw 708,000 passengers.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
