292,650 passengers for the year, shows how the pandemic has effected the airport in 2020. It's taken the airport back to the early 80s passenger numbers.

Thank you TLY and yes there was an error in my original post - I had some how included November 2000stats in that calendar year figure!!

I've posted a revised version of the summary sheet which I am sure is now correct - using files 12.1 & 12.2 from the CAA data.

Jerry - I'm afraid that the number is even lower than I had originally posted - ouch:(

January statistics courtesy of the CAA database using tables 3, 9, 12.1 and 12.2

I have omitted my monthly comparison of percentage change by route table as it is basically irrelevant in these dire times

March data has been available on the CAA website for a few days, however this is my first chance to actually sit down and analyse the information.

Data for Belfast City has not been updated, however I do not believe it will effect the Cardiff numbers.

The CAA passenger stats for May this year are now complete and show that CWL was the 36th busiest UK airport in that month.

The lack of domestic routes are telling but it beggars belief that a capital city airport should perform so poorly. A number of airports serving much smaller catchments and cities/towns than CWL handled more passengers than the 1,188 who passed through the Welsh capital's airport.

In the south-west corner of Britain both Exeter (4,608 passengers) and Newquay (2,875 passengers) saw more passengers than CWL. Most of Exeter's came on the Belfast City, Isles of Scilly, Jersey, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle routes whilst Newquay's lion's share was Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Teesside and Newcastle. Bristol handled 42,600 passengers.

In terms of its running passenger total CWL is the 25th busiest passenger airport in the 12 months to the end of May with just under 50,000 passengers. Airports such as Sumburgh, Norwich, Bournemouth and Southend have seen more passengers in the past 12 months.

The puzzle as to why airlines will operate routes to Exeter and Newquay at this time (Newquay might be slightly different given its holiday venue status) yet not to CWL just becomes more difficult to understand.

It is puzzling how CWL essentially seemed to be ignored.

Seven departures (and arrivals) today - the most for some time I think, so things are beginning to move in the right direction.

TUI - Palma and Ibiza
Vueling - Alicante and Malaga
Ryanair - Malaga and Barcelona
KLM - Amsterdam

Acknowledgement and thanks to South Wales Aviation Group for above information.

Yes it is getting better! Hopefully some more holiday routes will get released and we'll see more flights from TUI especially.

It just goes to show how reliant CWL is for holiday flights. NQY has been very popular because of the lack of holiday flights from the UK and people taking their holidays in the UK. CWL's location doesn't seem to work well in making West Wales accessible by Air with good links.

I think the type of tourism might be a problem as in that it's very much motor homes and caravans and campers that head down to West Wales. Newquay also is quite a fair bit away from the population centres of England making it more attractive to fly.

It's nice to see passenger numbers going up! Still a long way to go to get back to pre pandemic numbers.

Nice to see Welsh fans being able to travel to away games again, and give our boys some support, with the Enter Air charter this morning. RYR should do well for the Six Nations in Dublin this season, with extra flights by them I would hope.

The initial CAA data for September is now available however, please note the following caveat:

As of 22 October, the following airports are not yet available for reporting and therefore excluded: Aberdeen, Belfast City (George Best), Belfast International, Bristol, Dundee, Glasgow, Liverpool, Oxford and Southampton. The next scheduled refresh of airport publications will be week commencing 1 November 2021.

This means that, at present Table 9 shows total passengers as 24,003 against 23,767 in my analysis.

A question therefore for those you follow this thread - would you prefer an initial report, followed by an updated version (possibly weeks later) or to wait until all the figures are available? Please let me know with your views either by a post on here, or drop me a PM. Many thanks

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
