The loads on many of those routes look good and the airport is growing. Italy, Paris, Belfast and for next year Turkey all seem to be on the up but i do wonder about Spain. Apart from Madrid this year there will be no new route for next year and at the moment no extra frequencies on the current routes so for 2018 it might be a case of very little growth for the Spanish routes.

Thank you liam , most appreciated as i cant seem to acces waf any more cheers mate

Sorry for the long wait,

November load factors on BHD, TXL, ORK, JER, MXP and MUC not great but some are down to being operated on the E195. They would obviously look better on the E175. As always it's the yield that counts not the loads, and the yield isn't something we are ever likely to know.

Looking at December it does look like Berlin and Munich have seen some good growth so hopefully that will continue as has Chambery but Geneva is down, i don't know if that is because of less flights or a tour operator switching to Chambery but i'd guess the latter. Anglesey seems to continue growing which is good, i wonder if having a stable operator on the route and being sold through the Flybe website.
The introduction of the all E jet flights on the Amsterdam route does seem to be helping it as i believe that is the 2nd month of over 10% growth do lets hope that continues and Dublin seems to be recovering now and Cork and Jersey seem to be both growing well. Nice as well to see a few different routes on the their from the BA diversions as well, would be good to see a few of them in the future. A good month for the airport and 2018 promises to be better!

I have a feeling the caa don't include pax numbers to airports that has taken diversions. Not all airports own figures show them, but not sure if CWL do.

I used to think that. A note on the CAA stats says that diversions will be reallocated to the point of intended operation. But in practice diversions are 'given' to the diversion airport.

From what i've seen it looks like if the passengers of a diverted flight have to disembark at the airport they land at and go through something like immigration they get counted as passengers for the diverted airport.
Vienna 155
Zagreb 131
Nice 125
Gibraltar 162
Madrid 82
Zurich 128
The ones listed above are from the 6 British Airways flights that diverted into Cardiff on 10th December 2017 when Heathrow had deicing problems i believe.

CWL also had some flights diverted to them on 22 December when BRS was closed from late morning for the rest of the day because an aircraft left the runway. 22 December would have probably been the busiest day of the winter season at BRS but saw numerous flights cancelled or diverted (around 90). EXT had some of the diverted flights too (as did other diversionary airports) which might account for some of the high percentage increases on some routes at EXT in December given that airports now seem to count diverted passengers in their own monthly figures, and a corresponding drop at BRS.

Apart from Frankfurt which would've been BMI i'm guessing the diverted EZY flights were routes already covered from CWL, i'm wondering if 1 flight may have been from Faro as that had a 57% boost yet i don't think there were many flights from CWL itself during December as Flybe cut them back.

2 FEBRUARY
Over 15,000 set to fly through Cardiff for the Six Nations
The first Welsh home match this Saturday will welcome extra flights with Scottish supporters travelling into Cardiff on airlines including Jet 2 and Flybe from Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow.

Thousands of passionate Welsh rugby fans are planning their journey from Cardiff Airport to support the nation in Dublin. Over 30 extra flights are chartered for the Ireland V Wales match on carriers Aer Lingus, Ryanair and Flybe.

The French visit for Wales V France on 17th March will see the biggest influx of fans with over 10,000 additional passengers flying through the airport, on over 85 extra flights with 11 airlines.

Italian rugby fans travelling for the Wales v Italy match on 11th March can enjoy a long weekend in Cardiff, with flights with Flybe from Milan and Rome.

The teams and fans travelling during the tournament will also be able to enjoy the brand new extended departures area, completed by late February that includes a Pharmacy, new Costa Coffee, W H Smith and an extension of the Executive Lounge.

CEO Deb Barber commented:

“Large sporting events such as the Six Nations are always an exciting time in Wales, and Cardiff Airport is proud to be once again accommodating thousands of rugby fans during the tournament. There are some fantastic changes happening at Cardiff Airport, and the Six Nations will provide a great opportunity to showcase this to travelling fans.”

“Cardiff Airport will as always be flying the flag for Wales!”

Scheduled flights operate from Cardiff Airport to Ireland, Scotland, France and Italy;

  • Dublin – up to twice daily with Flybe
  • Cork – twice weekly with Flybe
  • Belfast City – up to twice daily with Flybe
  • Edinburgh – up to twice daily with Flybe
  • Glasgow – daily with Flybe
  • Aberdeen - 5 times a week with Eastern Airways
  • Paris – daily with Flybe
  • Chambery – once a week during the Winter with Flybe
  • Milan – 3 times a week with Flybe
  • Rome – twice a week with Flybe
  • Venice – twice a week from March 2018 with Flybe
  • Verona – twice a week from March 2018 with Flybe https://www.cardiff-airport.com/new...t-to-fly-through-cardiff-for-the-six-nations/

mathers said in another thread recently that the Wales v France match in Cardiff match generates by far the most air travellers through CWL for the Six Nations. With France being a home game for Wales this year it ought to generate an increase on the CWL passenger figures compared with last year's Six Nations season.

Noticed in Liams stats that Berlin and Munich do seem to have had a good December with average loads of over 80 and that Paris CDG seems to be sustaining the loads as well.
With regard to Rome thinking long-term does anyone think it'll end up daily like Paris even if another airline has to come onto it and add frequencies?

I suppose it depends on the yield and projected yield for an enhanced service. BRS has been going daily for most of the year to Rome for many years with monthly load factors in the high 90s% on easyJet year-round but there has been no increase in frequency. The same with Paris although bmi regional does now compete and in fact operates 2 x daily in the week. easyJet and Ryanair need high 90%-plus load factors across their network whereas Flybe seems to average around 70% so Rome might be an option for expansion.

The question is often asked about low-cost airlines setting up a base at CWL. Now there seems little doubt that summer sun routes and the likes of the Canaries year-round would attract high load factors but could CWL sustain high 90% load factors on 180-seat aircraft daily to the likes of Rome and CDG? That's probably the question that lo-cos ask themselves.

Until someone tries we shan't know. I remember when bmi baby tried Warsaw Chopin in 2008 they were up against easyJet from BRS. I think both operated 3 x weekly. I recall doing some stats at the time and found that baby was averaging around 80% load factor for the season and easyJet just under 90% - both were using aircraft with approximately 150 seats. We don't know yields and both routes stopped after 2008, partly because of the recession and possibly because of the charges at Chopin at the time. baby didn't seem to affect easyJet much so most of baby's passengers must have been 'new' passengers.

Paris CDG is going up to 10 weekly this summer it is a shame Rome didn't get an increase as well.
As for a LCC wanting to do the likes of AMS and Paris the only ones i could see wanting to do that would be Easyjet and Vueling but it might be a while until Cardiff could sustain an A320 sized operator on AMS and CDG with its current flights as well. Ryanair though would probably look more at the likes of Rome on low frequency rather than AMS and CDG on high frequency. It will be interesting to see when Summer 19 comes along if Rome gets any increased frequencies.

bmibaby used a 737 on Paris CDG (their fleet mainly consisted of 148-seat B 733s although they also had a couple of 131-seat B 735s). In 2003 CDG began at 2 x daily on weekdays, none on Saturdays and 1 x daily on Sundays. In 2004 it was reduced to daily and in 2005 the airline contracted Air Wales (ATR 42s) to operate the route for them. Air Wales operated 2 x daily on weekdays - fewer seats than the daily 737 but better options for customers.

bmibaby turned to Air Wales to operate Prestwick and Belfast International for them too, having originally operated the routes themselves. In fact, bmibaby began with GLA from CWL before switching to PIK .

In their previous incarnation at CWL Flybe operated Paris CDG 2 x daily (from memory) although I think they were combined flights with Glasgow, at least one of which went on to Paris CDG. It might have been both.

First time around Flybe started with Belfast City>Cardiff>Paris CDG>Cardiff>Belfast City 2 x daily Mon-Fri with 1 x weekly on Sat & Sun.

This was then moved to Glasgow after a year.

The route allowed for passengers from BHD\GLA to travel to Paris CDG via Cardiff.

On the BHD/GLA>CDG sector passengers could stay on board and wait for the CWL passengers to board.

On the CDG>BHD/GLA sector all passengers for BHD/GLA had to disembark, clear immigration, collected their transiting boarding passes at the check-in desk then clear through security again and then board the aircraft.

This flight was late a lot of the times due to passengers taking their time to clear the system etc.

Also figures were distorted as some times it looked as if route aaa doing badly however if there was high number of transits then were not many seats left for the cardiff pax to book.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
