For what it's worth the airport should stay as is for now until such time that it can stand on its own two feet as you have suggested. Of course it is Tory policy to "de-nationalise" everything so it's no big surprise he has made such a comment, even though it is missing some facts. Nothing would make him happy I fear!

September numbers soar

Cardiff Airport has seen a significant increase in passenger numbers (21%) meaning over 25,000 more customers flew through Wales’ national Airport in September 2015, compared to the same month in 2014. This substantial level of growth has not been seen since 2006 and is set to continue into 2016.

Travellers are taking advantage of an increased choice of destinations, more availability and better timings on key routes plus airlines offering greater value for money to fly from Cardiff.

The total number of passengers reached 150,477 in September 2015 an increase of 25,874 from 124,603 in 2014.

Routes seeing the largest growth are;

Faro – operated by Flybe and Thomson
Dublin – operated by Aer Lingus and Flybe
Edinburgh – operated by Flybe
Tenerife – operated by Ryanair, Thomson and Thomas Cook
Reus – operated by Thomson and Thomas Cook
In addition, new services to Cork, Milan and Munich are proving popular with both Welsh travellers and visitors to Wales.

The September figures follow a strong summer, where passenger numbers increased by 12% in June, 8% in July and 10% in August compared to the same quarter in 2014.

Debra Barber, Managing Director said: “We are extremely pleased to see such positive numbers during September especially after the success of the summer season. We’d like to thank all those who are choosing to fly through Cardiff, we know customers may not have used the Airport for some time but by supporting the current flights it not only helps the Airport grow, it makes the case for airlines to offer more choice at Cardiff even more compelling.

“October will be an exciting month for us as we prepare to welcome fans travelling to and from Cardiff for the Rugby World Cup and expect to see in the region of 30,000 extra passengers pass through the terminal.”

Lord Rowe-Beddoe, Chairman added: “The past four months have seen notable growth which is set to continue. The success of the new Flybe base plus strong load factors for airlines including KLM, Vueling, Aer Lingus and Thomson are also very encouraging.

“We know that customers will fly to and from Cardiff when there is the choice of destinations at reasonable prices. We remain focussed on giving customers even more options so that Cardiff becomes the Airport of choice for both Welsh passengers and those travelling to Wales.”

Recent Airport announcements have included Spanish airline Vueling launching an increased summer 2016 programme from Wales offering more than an extra 30,000 seats after a fourth successful year operating from Cardiff.

In addition Thomson Cruises chose Cardiff as one of six specially selected regional Airports in the UK to serve new direct charter flights to Dubai for January and February 2017 as it operates out of the port of Dubai for the first time. The flights follow the popularity of Caribbean charter flights which operate from Cardiff and always prove very popular with customers.

CAA stats now published for the above month confirm that 150,130 passengers were handled, an increase of 22.1% on September 2014. Atms were up 7.5% and the rolling 12-month total was 1,063,310, up 1.4% on a year ago.

With the rugby passengers this weekend and last week it seems certain that the airport will end the calendar year with a throughput of over 1.1 million passengers. This total may even be reached by the end of this month given the rugby.

With 2016 hopefully seeing a continuation of the Flybe programme, and possibly an increase, plus extra Vueling flights the total should be well on the way to 1.2 million by the end of 2016; more if additional routes/frequencies/carriers are announced.

I don't know why they gave the wrong percentage increase either. Taking the respective passenger numbers for September 2014 and September 2015 it was obvious that the rise was more than 21%.

CAA stats for October 2015

The first batch of airports should have been published today but weren't so it's to be hoped they will be tomorrow.

With the rugby world cup flights estimated to have produced at least 30,000 punters and the Flybe base not in being last year, the percentage increase will be quite spectacular given that only 92,323 passengers passed through the terminal in October 2014.

The increase for the month ought to be in the 40%-50% range.

CAA stats October 2015

CWL saw a quite sensational percentage passenger numbers rise of 60.3% in October when 148,021 passengers passed through the terminal, an increase of nearly 56,000 passengers on October 2014. Atms were up 31.1%

This has taken the rolling 12-month total to 1,119,008 which is 7.5% up on a year ago and the highest 12-month rolling total since April 2012.

The bulk of the increase is due to the rugby world cup matches in the city that featured Ireland and France but, putting that aside, the rise for October is still appreciable and demonstrates the value of the Flybe base in getting bodies through the terminal.

I was anticipating a huge percentage rise but not quite that big. I believe that the 30,000 rugby travellers estimated by the airport before the games took place was a conservative one.

That is an amazing amount for October and it even exceeded my expectations too. Even without the rugby airlifts I think with Flybe's 2 based aircraft it would still have been up on October 2014. It's all good news though. Even during the winter months I think pax figures will be an improvement on last winter. although I wonder how to cancelled flights to SSH will have a big effect. I suppose that depends on when and if flights to SSH resume.

No doubt about that, probably around a 15-20% increase without the rugby and, yes, passenger figures for winter should be comfortably up each month on the previous year.

I have seen on another forum that although the increase, they are not happy with the pax figures on some of the Flybe routes. You may have seen this yourself. I do get frustrated at the "doom and gloom" brigade.

Yes, the load factors are not brilliant on some of the routes but if CWL operated the E175 jet instead of the E 195 they would be pretty good. The snag is that in peak summer they would not get everyone on the E175 to such places as Faro, and CDG and EDI might be too small on some days as well.

Assuming all scheduled flights operated in October this is my breakdown of the load factors. All were on the E 195 except BHD and one DUS rotation which were Q 400.

I could not calculate Dublin as Flybe competes with EIR, and in October Ryanair also put on scheduled flights for the world cup rugby matches.

Suffice to say that Dublin saw 29,909 passengers (21,833 sched and 8076 charter) an increase of just 432% on October 2014.

Some of these are not great figures. Maybe, as South Wales loves its rugby, a lot of people chose to stay at home and go to the many World Cup matches that were being played in the centre of Cardiff. However, we shall see how the Flybe flights fare in the November figures, which should give a clearer pitcure

I don't think we shall really see how the routes bed down until next summer. The winter is never going to be huge although Christmas/New Year and half term in February will see a pick-up.

Nevertheless, it will still be much better than CWL's offering in recent winters.

In a news item on its website (see link below) Cardiff Airport confirms Debra Barber as managing director and chief operating officer. She has been interim managing director for the past year.

The same news item mentions this November's passenger figures which are still to be released by the CAA.

Passenger numbers are currently +10% for the rolling year to the end of November 2015 at 1,139,567. November figures are +33% compared to November 2014 which follows a record breaking October with passenger numbers being +62% year on year. Growth is due to the success of the new Flybe base plus strong load factors for airlines including KLM, Vueling, Aer Lingus and Thomson.

November 2014 saw just short of 49,000 passengers (this was a 18.5% decrease on November 2013) so a 33% increase will take this November's numbers to around 65.000.

I read elsewhere that the airport is predicting 1.2 million passengers in 2016. I suggested this number a month or two ago but with the proviso that any further announcement(s) would see it exceeded.

Incidentally, October this year was nowhere near a record breaker. Just over 148,000 passengers were handled which is well down on the best ever October in 2007 which saw 209,000. 2008 was also well up on October 2015 as were most of the Octobers in the early part of this century. October 2015 actually took us back to October 2009 when 148,000 passengers were handled then.
