I think an Australian investment fund owns about a third of MAG which presumably is why the Wales First Minister's first idea was some sort of private sector partnership, and of course MAG also owns EMA, BOH and STN.

I'm pretty sure MAG is 100% owned by the local authorities of Greater Manchester.

The Council of the City of Manchester - 55%
The Borough Council of Bolton - 5%
The Borough Council of Bury - 5%
The Oldham Borough Council - 5%
The Rochdale Borough Council - 5%
The Council of the City of Salford - 5%
The Metropolitan Borough Council of Stockport - 5%
The Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council - 5%
The Trafford Borough Council - 5%
The Wigan Borough Council - 5%

http://www.magworld.co.uk/gcsebusinessstudies/ownership.html

http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/about-us/manchester-airport-and-mag/

I think that three or four years ago when MAG was considering purchasing STN they needed more funds so shareholding in MAG was extended outside local authority ownership. The Australian IFM Investors bought 35.5% of the equity.

The MAG website - see above link - shows the following ownership:

IFM Investors - 35.5%
Manchester City Council - 35.5%
The other nine Greater Manchester Councils - 29%.

Perhaps our Manchester members might be able to help us.

Yes. The first Flybe E195 went into CWL at the beginning of June last year and the second right at the end of August.

So from June this year the comparison will feature just one of the two extra aircraft and from September it will be a level playing field.

However, Vueling is putting in a lot more capacity this summer on its sun routes than last year which will help to provide increased passenger numbers, and there are one or two other things that will also help. Furthermore, 2016 seems to have started like a house on fire across many UK airports in terms of passenger number rises and I expect CWL to be amongst the beneficiaries.

October might be the month that may not look so good as in October 2015 CWL handled over 30,000 Rugby World Cup passengers, although Flybe's six-week London City service to alleviate the Severn Tunnel closure will compensate to an extent in the autumn.

Obviously, the massive monthly percentage rises of the past nine months will begin to fall away from June and this trend will be more noticeable from September but I still believe that CWL will see at least respectable passenger rises right through the coming winter. If further significant announcements are made for the coming winter then who knows what sort of winter the airport will enjoy?

CAA Stats March 2016

These are now out and confirm the figures published earlier this month by the airport.

78,229 passengers passed through the airport, an increase of 29.3% on March 2015. Atms were up 18.9%. Rolling 12-month total was 1,223,565, up 21.8% on a year ago.

Great to see the airport climbing back towards where it aught to be. As it builds on it's success, more airlines will take note and the airport will continue to grow.

The figures are continuing to rise slowly which is a great sign that people are thinking twice about flying from other airports. There is still a way to go and what CWL need to do is to entice more pax to use the routes served from CWL A slow and long hard slog but I think they will do it. With pax numbers increasing they way that it is eventually we will see new airlines and routes to boost the pax numbers. It'll be interesting to see what the summer season stats will show.

Passenger figures continue to grow

Following a successful start to the spring season, passenger numbers have increased significantly for the month of April 2016 ending 40% up versus the same month last year.

An eleventh month of consecutive growth now brings the rolling twelve month figure up to 1.251 million passengers (+24%), such numbers have not been seen since 2011.

Last month saw the re-commencement of popular summer routes including Palma with Thomson, meaning Welsh passengers can enjoy an early sunny getaway from their national Airport.

April also saw the start of a brand new route with Flybe to Verona. This popular Italian destination – made famous by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet - is a firm favourite with opera lovers and foodies alike, and is also the perfect starting point to tour around Northern Italy or enjoy a romantic break. Flights depart Cardiff on Saturdays with fares available from just £37.99 each way including taxes and charges.

Customers are taking advantage of an increased choice of destinations, more availability and better timings on key routes, plus airlines are offering greater value for money to fly from Cardiff. There has also been a number of exciting announcements made by airlines in recent weeks:

KLM, one of Cardiff Airport’s longest-serving airlines, has announced new daily connections to Valencia, Dresden, Genoa and Salt Lake City via Amsterdam Schiphol for summer 2016. The airline’s partnership with Delta also means that up to 19 cities in North America can now be reached with one stop via Amsterdam, including:

Canada: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal
USA: Boston, NYC, Washington DC, Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Houston, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and LA
Mexico: Mexico City

Flybe has stepped in to offer ‘rescue flights’ to London City starting on 12th September, ensuring Welsh passengers still have vital access to the city whilst works are underway on the Severn Tunnel. The flight is just 40 minutes by air with fares available from just £34.99 one way, making the journey from Cardiff quick and cost-effective.

Additionally Flybe has also released its first wave of flights for winter 2016/17 and announced a brand new route to Berlin starting on 2nd November.

Low-cost Spanish airline Vueling has responded to the demand from Welsh customers and increased its summer programme of flights from Cardiff by some 40%, meaning greater capacity on flights to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma Majorca.

Ryanair has doubled its capacity at Cardiff Airport on winter flights to Tenerife, with a second weekly flight departing on Thursday to complement the existing Monday route, on sale now at ryanair.com

Additionally, frequency to Milan and Faro increases to four times a week in peak season with Flybe and charter flights to Cancun and Orlando will depart during the summer with Thomas Cook.

The 11 months of growth from June 2015, averages 35% per month are broken down as follows:

Month 2015-16

% growth from previous year

Passenger numbers

June 12% 133,137

July 8% 139,805

August 10% 149,230

September 21% 150,477

October 62% 149,823

November 32% 65,040

December 56% 64,220

January 42% 59,715

February 68% 75,055

March 29% 78,413

April 40% 80,545

Debra Barber, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer at Cardiff Airport, said:

"It’s very encouraging to see yet another month of passenger growth. Summer is just around the corner and we’re off to a great start, with a number of popular holiday destinations available on our 18 airlines including Spain, Malta, the Canaries, Bulgaria and the Algarve.

“In May we’ll also be unveiling our new-look departures area and officially opening Caffè Ritazza and the Beer House airside catering facilities. We remain committed to delivering an enjoyable customer experience and proudly fly the flag for Wales every day of the year.”

Winter 2016/17 is already shaping up to be busy with Flybe and Vueling having released their winter schedule early to facilitate demand from Welsh customers to be able to book well in advance.

Winter will also see new direct cruise flights to Dubai with Thomson and P&O Cruises will continue with another programme of cruise flights to the Caribbean. KLM will also be operating more flights to Amsterdam using its larger Embraer 190 jet aircraft.

April 2016 - passenger figures

Another spectacular percentage monthly passenger rise (see previous post) which amounts to around 23,000 more passengers than in April 2015.

Summer should continue to show impressive percentage rises although from June the comparison will be two Flybe E195s versus one last year and from September two Flybe E195s versus two last year.

However, with Vueling providing a noticeably increased offering this summer, and with one or two additions from other carriers, the end of year total will be well over 1.3 million.

Taking up Em’s point, CWL is obviously attracting a lot more passengers particularly with the Flybe and Vueling services, and a 2/3 aircraft low cost airline base would return the airport to the days when bmibaby was at its height at CWL.

Those days saw just over 2 mppa in 2007 and just under 2 mppa in 2008. However, even then CWL was still leaking passengers in considerable numbers to other airports with, for example, a CAA survey in 2008 showing that nearly 800,000 passengers originating in or with final destination in Wales still used BristolAirport.

So there are plenty of targets for the airport. First, get back to that 2 mppa. Second, once there continue to build in a way that makes leakage largely unnecessary and far less likely. It’s easy to say and will be a challenge to accomplish but it will fascinating to watch for those who follow the fortunes of CWL.

These are impressive figures for April, Local and are much better than I would have anticipated. This bodes well for the rest of Summer 16. With a year since Flybe first restarted fast approaching with the 1 195 and the second a year come September, I think there is till scope for loads on their routes will have improved. CWL is slowly recovering after bmibaby's exit. The problem does lie in the fact that both CWL and BRS are far too close to each other but I think they can co-exist. It will be interesting to see how the next few months how pax figures will increase and also if there are any new routes/airlines in the pipeline.

Thanks for that Local, shall be interesting to digest the loads on Flybe services in the coming weeks, hopefully this will show increases on certain routes MUC being one of these, Stats should continue to grow until around October/November ish where they should start to level out following the second Embraer and the RWC Traffic, Success encourages growth, no one likes to see failing routes that's why this Flybe base is incredibly important, after a slow start things seem to be picking up.

Cobalt should be having a news confrence in the coming days to announce further details a website with bookable ticket sales, a 1/2 weekly Laranca service will prove to be a good boost with it seemingly scheduled to launch from Cardiff in July, I imagine this will aim to mop up the remainder of the summer season with late bookings

Then it's all eyes to Summer 17 news, Ryanair has many bases throughout Europe with routes that could work without the need for basing aircraft, same can be said ith Vueling, summer sun destinations are still massively underserved, ALC and AGP are way down on where they were with BmiBaby, PMI also, Many routes that aren't served from a LCC point of view, Murcia, Ibiza, Reus,Mahon Girona, Las Palmas, Arreicfe in Spain, Greek routes which apart from the charter operators remain totally unserved. And Italy too e.g Naples. Of course as you have stated local,A 2/3 airline base would certainly put Cardiff back into its prime days of 2MPA.

There is a huge opportunity for both Vueling and Ryanair or even a new operator ( Jet2) to come in and take on some of these routes, the bonus being with an airline like Jet2 is you get the tour operator side of things alongside the Airline, and as I said before with both Thomas cook and Thomson showing no vision to expand as such, that would be a big coup for the airport.

The coming months should be very Interesting as to if these Jet2 rumours come off and potential developments of other airlines for next Summer and I find myself with with a greater confidence than I've had many years.

Severnside - share of the spoils

The last year that CWL handled more passengers than BRS was in 1986 with annual totals of 487,000 and 469,000 respectively. This gave a ‘Severnside’ total of 956,000 that year with CWL handling 50.9%.

I’ve listed below the Severnside totals for each calendar year since 1986 with CWL’s percentage of the total shown in the right hand column.

Until 2001 the discrepancy was not huge with CWL handling around 40% most years after 1990. With the arrival of GoFly (later absorbed into easyJet) at BRS in 2001 CWL’s proportion quickly decreased and even in its ‘halcyon’ years of 2006/7/8 CWL only saw around 25% of the Severnside total.

With bmi baby’s reduction and later complete pull-out from CWL the percentage dropped to the mid teens.

1986 0.956 50.9%

1987 1.277 49.5%

1988 1.324 46.8%

1991 1.296 39.6%

1992 1.679 38.9%

1993 1.876 40.7%

1994 2.266 43.7%

1995 2.455 41.8%

2002 4.831 29.3%

2003 5.787 32.8%

2004 6.476 28.9%

2010 7.121 19.6%

2011 6.976 17.3%

2012 6.929 14.6%

2013 7.182 14.7%

2014 7.352 13.9%

2015 7.939 14.6%

2016* 8.258 15.1% (*January-April)

The positive thing from CWL’s perspective is that it has begun to see a small rise in percentage share since 2014. However, in actual passenger numbers the gap between CWL and BRS continues to get bigger.

In 2010 BRS handled 4.325 million more passengers than CWL; in 2011 4.560 million; in 2012 4.903 million; in 2013 5.068 million; in 2014 5.314 million; in 2015 5.623 million. By the end of April this year the gap had widened again - this time to 5.756 million.

The slight percentage clawback of recent years, plus its overall passenger number increases during this period, might suggest that CWL is beginning to recapture some of its lost passengers who've been using other airports, notably BRS. However, the fact that BRS continues to grow quicker in real passenger terms might mean that as many 'Welsh' passengers as hitherto, perhaps more, are still crossing the Severn to fly.

Figures can mean many things and they are presented here as factual evidence; conclusions can be debated and argued over. What is beyond doubt is that both airports are growing with the current Severnside passenger total of 8.25 million the highest ever recorded. The end of 2016 could see a total in the region of 8.8 million.

Welsh dragon takes off again at Cardiff

Interesting article that states that CWL achieved a 28 per cent rise in passenger numbers last year taking the total to 1.3 million. I don't think they mean 2015 in a calendar year sense because the rise then was 13.6%. They must be talking about the 12 months from June 2015. The report is also askew when it says that airlines put on flights to '50 new, mainly sunnier, destinations'. There certainly haven't been 50 new destinations in the past year.

Nevertheless, the thrust of the piece is the recovery that the airport is in the process of making since the years when it slipped to below 1 mppa. There is no doubt that passenger numbers have increased at a greater rate than many would have predicted a couple of years ago. The last 12 months have seen getting on for 300,000 additional passengers.

By the end of 2016 the total ought to be nearer 1.4 million than 1.3 million and if just a two-aircraft base of Ryanair/Jet2 size aircraft was set up the 2 mppa level would be reached again, or very nearly.

Anyone know when the May and June stats are coming out?

CWL published its own figures for May on 7 June - see below press release from its website.

May saw an increase of 27% on May 2015 with 134,285 passengers passing through the terminal. Rolling 12-month total till the end of May was 1,279 million. I would have expected June's to be published on the CWL website around now. In previous months during the past year they've got the figures out very quickly.

When the CAA will get around to publishing its own May figures, still less its June figures, is anyone's guess. CWL's and the CAA's figures are usually in sync unlike, say, BRS whose own figures are usually a bit less than the CAA's because that airport does not count certain types of passenger - under 2s for example - but the CAA does.

June will be interesting because May 2015 to May 2016 was the first 12 months of the Flybe base whereas the previous 12 months with which it compared each month didn't have the base. June, July and August will still be unbalanced in the comparison because those months last year had only one based aircraft. It will only be from September onwards that it will be like against like (unless some good news intrudes before September of course).

Cardiff Airport announces 12 months of passenger growth

Another successful month has been recorded at Cardiff Airport, with passenger numbers increasing by 27% versus the same month last year. This increase represents twelve consecutive months of growth, bringing the rolling twelve month total of passengers flying from Cardiff to just over 1.279 million.

Customers are taking advantage of an increased choice of destinations, more availability and better timings on key routes, plus airlines are offering greater value for money to fly from Cardiff.

This announcement comes following a number of exciting developments for Wales’ national airport.

Flybe has recently marked the one year anniversary of its two aircraft base at Cardiff Airport. Having enjoyed a successful year of flying, the airline has increased summer flights to Faro and Milan to 4 times a week and will operate flights up to four times a day to London City from September 12 to step in and help Welsh customers during the Severn Tunnel closure.

Additionally Flybe has also released its flights for winter 2016/17 and announced a brand new route to Berlinstarting on 2nd November.

Low-cost Spanish airline Vueling has responded to the demand from Welsh customers and increased its summer programme of flights from Cardiff by some 40%, meaning greater capacity on flights to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma Majorca.

The terminal has also undergone improvement, with a brand new walk-through duty free store, coffee shop, bar and restaurant now open in departures.

Debra Barber, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer at Cardiff Airport commented: “It’s been a fantastic twelve months, we’ve seen some exciting developments and a busy start to the summer season. During May half term week alone we saw more than 35,000 passengers through our doors and enjoy the new look in our departure lounge.

Additionally, we’re continuing to fly the flag for Wales and on Saturday we were pleased to be able to give the Wales football team a fantastic send off for the start of the Euros. Here’s to continuing success and more busy summer months to follow.”

CWL has announced its June 2016 passenger figures today in a press release on its website - https://www.cardiff-airport.com/news/2016/07/12/cardiff-named-uks-fastest-growing-airport/

It shows that 156,162 passengers passed through the terminal during the month which is a rise of 17% on June 2015. The rolling 12-month total is 1,302,583 which is an increase of 28% on a year ago. In real terms it amounts to an additional 290,000 passengers.

The full press release is copied below.

Cardiff named UK’s fastest growing airport

Cardiff is now the UK’s fastest growing airport that regularly handles over one million passengers annually.

The rolling total of passengers flying from Cardiff now stands at 1,302,583 representing 28% passenger growth over the last 12 months (June 2015- June 2016).

Cardiff Airport has delivered 13 consecutive months of growth. June alone saw an increase of 17% in passengers travelling through the airport versus the same month last year, in what has been a successful and busy start to the summer season.

The Airport has been boosted by Wales’ success in Euro 2016 with over 6,000 passengers travelling on charter flights to watch Wales compete in France, and an exciting welcome home event for the team when they flew into Cardiff on 8 July.

This news follows on from a number of important announcements from our airlines and operators in recent weeks:

  • Thomas Cook has announced it will once again operate direct flights to Orlando for summer 2017
  • Newmarket Holidays has added new destinations to its programme for summer 2017, with charter flights operating to Verona, Naples, Venice and Dubrovnik, while Balkan Holidays and Thomson have also released their summer 2017 flying programme
  • The winter 2016/17 season will also see additional cruise flights to the Caribbean with P&O Cruises and two departures to Dubai with Thomson so passengers can meet its Celebration cruise ship at the port.
Our passengers are now taking advantage of an increased choice of destinations, more availability and better timings on key routes, plus airlines are offering greater value for money to fly from Cardiff.

Roger Lewis, Chairman of Cardiff Airport, said: “Today we are sending a signal to the world that Wales is well and truly open for business.

“Cardiff Airport is the fastest growing airport in the UK that regularly handles over one million passengers. We have delivered thirteen consecutive months of growth and have achieved 28% growth over the past year. Moreover, we are confidently forecasting continued growth for the next two years. We are a national asset for Wales and we intend to expand our activities to reflect this.”

Debra Barber, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer at Cardiff Airport commented: “This has been an exciting time for Cardiff Airport’s development, both in terms of passenger growth and improvements to the customer experience.

“We are working closely with our airline partners and are focussed on delivering sustainable growth, so to be UK’s fastest growing large airport really sets us apart from our peers and strengthens our position within the market.

“As the country’s national airport we are proud to see more and more Welsh customers flying through each day, whilst also acting as the gateway to Wales for international visitors. I’m sure that with ongoing success such as this we will see airlines continuing to invest in Wales and increasing choice for our customers.”

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
